My spying eyes have found this for sale. Unfortunately I know nothing about these, despite owning a Detective special and being a fan. From what I can find, this was the last gasp of the Detective Special, made for only a few years in the late '90's. Most were 2", a few were in 3", and very rare ones were made with a 4" barrel. I can see that the more common 2" versions are collectible and go for decent money, around $1200-$1500 in LNIB shape. This one is a bit unique in that the shop thats selling it bought it as part of a closing shop sale by another shop, so the gun is literally NIB. Not like new in box, but literally has never been sold or transferred.
They want a lot for it though. $2200.
Also available as NIB, never transferred, is a 2" version for $1500.
I can't decide if that's a reasonable price for a rare variant of an already rare and collectible piece. The 2" version I have no interest in, as I already have a blued 2" Detective special with the shrouded barrel.
What say you?

Big Money! didn’t know they we going for do much

There is also a NIB magnum carry for $2k and a NIB DS-II 2" for $1500. I just like the 4" though. Enough to fork over $2.2K? At that price i'd have to keep it unfired and NiB or the value isn't there.
I can’t buy a gun and not shoot it. but… again, this is big money choices

If you're a collector of Colts that may be worth it to you. I'd have a hard time not shooting it, and then... I guess the value drops somewhat, right? Something like this is sort of a one-of-a-kind find in effect. So the value is subjective and only you can decide if the pride of ownership is worth it.

I'd have to go with the Magnum Carry myself- only ever seen one in the flesh.

Those SF-VI action guns are kinda red-headed stepchildren as they are too valuable to carry and only an expert can tell them apart from new production at a glance, as they don't have that "vintage" look to them either.

Also parts are likely unobtainium....

I dunno, they don't really do it for me. Neat collectors peices, though. 👍

I have two Magnum Carrys. I carried one for a few years CCW. I HAD to. It says "Carry" on the barrel, and I do what I'm told! But they are nice wheelguns.

well, on the advice of a few serious collectors over on the Coltforum I locked it down. The DS-II's are rare guns already and the 4" version is the rarest, less than 1k made from what I'm seeing and are extremely hard to find.
This might be the only true NiB 4" DS-II left on the planet.

You DON’T need it at all … Way to Expensive and spectacularly

What’s the Gun Shop Name??? so I can call them and tell them: that elderly abuse is a crime in some states. Give them a piece of my wallet, I ment mind…

I looked at them when they were regular production and thought they were pretty nice... but bought an automatic instead.
I think the price is too much for a shooter and can't guess about them as speculative investments.

The last DS I looked at back in the day was so poorly made the cylinder slop was so bad, I considered it being unsafe, especially for a NIB gun.

$2200??? oh hell no

I'm sort of a Colt fan with a 1911 and a couple ARs---but for me their revolvers have left something to be desired.

Oh I'll admit that this one is not a "bargain" per say, but you know what they say,
when opportunity knocks, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Elderly abuse? Dang, buy one bottle of thickening shampoo and them punk kids jump all over you.

My .02 is yes, get it.
That is a seldom encountered late model Colt (the old Colt as we knew it) in a rare barrel length.
I really don't believe you can get hurt on this one.

Your money and choice of course.
