Your Thoughts on Pistol Powder Availability

I've seen more in the last 2 months than the past 14 that's for sure

Good point. I actually scored 231 lately, and have seen BE on multiple occasions.

It's getting better.

At last inventory I believe that I had 26# of assorted powder. I don't shoot as much as I used to so I probably have enough to last the rest of my shooting days.(I'm old):( There is a small amount of different powders showing up locally. I have seen 4350, 3031, 4895, 4227 and H110/296 this last couple of weeks, but the fast pistol and shotgun powders are still missing.

I was at that show on Sunday. Could not find any Bulls Eye, Red Dot or Unique. Bought some surplus. I'm trying to decipher it on this here website

I live near Midsouth so I check thier inventory daily. Their supply does seem to be improving. They got some Titegroup and 700X in today. I bought 1 lb of Titegroup (to let others have some) and it sold out within hours. Saw a few people on Facebook today celebrating buying 7-10 lbs of it.

I bought 3 lbs of Longshot almost a year ago because I didn't think I'd see pistol powder for a while. Still have most of it, and might sell it again if I can find another powder.

Overall, I think powder availability is trending up.

I have no idea when it will be (and neither does anyone else) but for me it will be back to normal when I can order 2 8# jugs of HP38 from Powder Valley.

without hijacking the thread into politics, hopefully now that the elections is over and the odds something drastic happening with gun control dropping pretty low, perhaps the stockpiling will ease up some on the demand side of the equation, and the manufacturers will feel comfortable enough to invest in additional capacity to buff the supply side.

I can always hope anyway. (and as long as I am dreaming, lets allow the m1 returns, permit kalashnikov and norinco to begin importing again, and raise the bag limit on flying pigs)

Very true..

without hijacking the thread into politics,

i dont mind a little hijacking if Walkalong doesnt mind. Maybe you're right, maybe this has more to do with politics than I realize and it was just running parallel with the antis in DC.

It obviously had a great deal to do with politics, and yesterdays results should help some. Several anti votes were defeated.

That said, it isn't going to change overnight. It will get better, but will still be a while. Too many back orders getting filled etc. Too many new reloaders to the "I'm going to be ready next time" club.

But it will get better.

And nope, no politics. :)

It wasn't that long ago there was no, I mean no rifle powder to be had and there was only the somewhat uncommonly used pistol powders(shotgun/pistol powders, mostly).
The wind always changes direction eventually.

Commonly favorite pistol powders are on online shelves at least once a week. 110/296//HS-6/BE/PP/Unique/HP-38/231 are available. They do not last, but it happens.

Ok, scratch my theory about powder that I had yesterday. Ive now seen more pistol powder in the past week than the last 6 mos combined, especially today.

Ive seen w231, Longshot, Bullseye, BE86, and Unique.

PotatoHead I figured you knew where Zero was, but on another point I saw 10 1lb cans of Longshot in Cullman last week, I was picking up some CFEpistol and Titegroup. Having to drive from Decatur to Cullman, but the one LGS has been pretty good at having what I need at reasonable prices unlike Hsv. and Decatur.:)

In my area things are really picking up. And although my list is short and very specific and limited regarding variety, I have seen a healthy increase in the retail sector over the last couple months, H110/296, Longshot, HS6, well that's about it for my taste buds anyway. But I have seen a lot of others hitting the shelves also.

It's coming around, and with the way things are swinging, I expect it to recover at a steady pace in the months to come. We are winning the battle I think, at least for now. 2016 may be the ultimate turning point if we all do our part, conservatively speaking of course.

Also fairly new here, but it's not too bad around here. I'm paying $35 a pound for Titegroup but I can get it fairly regularly. Luckily I'm only loading small rounds like .380 and .32 where a pound will last a year or so.

That being said, I'm not venturing into anything bigger until I can reliably get powder.

Dang, I haven't seen HS-6 in forever. Id gladly trade some of my stash for some. Supposedly VV N-340 is close though, and I did find a pound of that.

Always keep in mind it takes a really serious pistol shooter to go thru a pound of powder in a year.

Eh? I go through about 2 pounds per year and feel guilty for not practicing enough.

I personally have about 1.25 pounds of Power Pistol right now. 0.5 lb of Ramshot Competition. 2lbs of Red Dot. 0.25 to 0.5 lbs of a half dozen various rifle powders.

Hopefully I can make that stuff stretch until I can get a nice big lot of something a little more suited to my needs (Bullseye, Unique, W-231, AA#2, AA#5, etc).

Until we start seeing the Hodgdon Clay line up for grabs. This includes Universal too. I know ADI had a fire and stalled production. But I haven't seen any sign of it showing anywhere. Has anybody seen Clays lately?

It is purportedly on the boat at this time
Those of us who shoot a lot of shotgun ammo would like to finally see some, that's for sure - hopefully it won't all be 1# jugs

Ive managed to acquire quite a nice selection of pistol powder..but Im kind of afraid to use it. In my little brain it's kind of morphed into precious metal status.

Haha same here. I walk out into the shop and look at my powder, and nod in satisfaction. Then I go back inside. Not gonna load any big batches until I see it on the shelves regularly.

All those posts on the new-to-the-US Spanish powders are due to the drstic cut in pistol powders available.

As said, powder availability "may" improve, due to the political improvements we "EXPECT" to happen; BUT pistol powders have been affected by a perfect storm of bad luck that compound the problems.
Red Dot, Clays, Vightavuori, Win 231/HP-38 plus numerous losses in the IMR powders going away are NOT going to get better very soon at all. Early last year, I guessed sometime this year.

Demand is high, so prices are more likely to get worse instead of better. Even the new Spanish Powders' prices have already increased a little.

Maybe next year we'll see some semblance of normality return.
