Zombies

The first thing I thought of after reading this was me in that situation with a 12 Gauge Mossberg 500 w/ a sling over my back, a Sig P220 for my sidearm and toting an HK UMP as my primary. The UMP would of course be chambered in .45 so then i could stock up on the same ammo as the 220. I can think of other weapons that I would equally like, but that was the first thing that came to my mind.

If it's set in Australia, they might be able to get hold of an sks or two, they're still legal on a category c license. At least in Victoria last time I checked. Much more likely to run into lever actions in whatever cal. Bolt guns, some pistols.
Military armory, steyrs, minimi, maybe MAG58, some might still have an SLR or two kicking around. They don't keep any ammo there though, so you'd have to get that from a gun shop.
Unfortunately, if you're going to break into an armory, you'd need some serious gear first. Like explosives, masonry saw, something like that. Police armory might be a little easier.
:scrutiny: I think I've put far to much thought into this...

No they don't need to break into an armory... If this is a zombie movie cliche type story what will happen is the main character(s) will shortly join up with a group of special op soldiers who have been cut off from and or lost contact with the rest of the army. The leader of this group of course will be a fanatical overconfident arse and will foolishly sacrifice himself and all his soldiers to the zombie horde. Our main character(s), however, will be able to fight off the horde better than the special op soldiers despite their lack of military training.

Now they will have access to all the special op soldiers' weapons - and of course they will be as tacticool as it gets: G36s, UMPs, MP5s, AR-15s, Benelli M4s, M1A Socom IIs, Remington M24 Sniper Systems, P90s, M60 SAWs... and don't forget that all of these guns will be bristling with flashlights and lasers as well as red-dot scopes, holographic sights, and sniper scopes. Also our hero will be able to load and operate these guns like an expert on his first try.

... I can't believe we're talking about this :scrutiny:

Why is it that a love for firearms always seems to be followed by a fascination with zombies, and all the what ifs that go along with it.

I kind of wish there was a zombie outbreak. It would be totally exciting and I kind of want to see how long I would live.

Did I just say that?

:D

Go on Amazon.com and order yourself a copy of "The Zobie Survival Guide". It's a fun read and lots of info.
Non-gunnies will probably grab whatever's mean-looking and flashy like a Desert Eagle, Tech-9, or something else equally useless.

surviving the zombie apocalypse

A fun question, I think lot's of people who bought guns for self defense have wondered about how to survive the rise of living dead...

Here's a link to fuzzy bunny movie guns, an actual retailer of pistols, shotguns, rifles and accessories, based in Utah. They sell a "zombie loadout kit" guaranteed to be effective against small to moderate zombie outbreaks (max. 100 zombies.)

Better question to ask is what kind of guns will actually be available to your characters? Is the story set in some Australian city? If so, case a local gun shop and see what's for sale...

My bet for anti-zombie personal weapons would include a Remington 870 pump shotgun (ideally the 870 Marine, with it's no rust nickel coating) with buckshot and a reliable .45 (Glock 21 or Springfield XD for capacity, Sig p220 for accuracy and reliability, 1911 if you want to be old school tough) or high caliber revolver (Ruger redhawk, S&W 629, or again for old school a Colt python or Anaconda), if we're talking about George Romero style, headshot-only zombies. My preference for hollowpoint handgun ammo is good old federal Hydra-Shoks. If there were a means to carry it, a long range weapon like a rifle in .308 or .30-06 (if you can get to a nice open area, or someplace with a nice high vantage point, to snipe at zombies before they get close) and a machete or samurai or sword or cleaver, some edged chopping hand weapon, because eventually you will run out of ammo (zombies just keep coming....) and will have to decapitate the suckers the hard way. Also, put on some gloves, boots, a leather jacket, something to guard against zombie bites and scratches. Motorcycle helmet, maybe.

It's not the dumbest thing to wonder about, really. Think of being in a Rwandan city in the midst of that ethnic genocide (I once read a review of "Hotel Rwanda" that pointed out the many plot similarities to the remake of "Dawn of the Dead") or being a store owner in downtown LA during the post Rodney King verdict riots. You may never see actual zombies, but SHTF in real life too.

someone already beat me to it...

Go "John Woo meets George Romero"

Beretta's seem to be the way to go, get you a CX4 and a couple of 92's...ESPECIALLY if they are like mine and have CT grips. :) plus 9mm at range would be plenty to punch into a brain-pan, I think.

A good back up weapon would be an auto-loader shotgun...especially one like a Winchester Super X2 Practical competition model or a Benelli of similar make.

Lastly, go on over and check out the Zombie Squad...same handle there as here. :)

Good luck with the story!

If it's Australia, I'd say they grab a couple of Enfield rifles, and a couple of double barrel shotguns.

Once they get to some dead soldiers, pick up FAL, or AUG military rifles, and of course the venerable Browning Hi-Power.

FMJ is the main loading, with some soft point ammo picked up in the gun store for the Enfields.

I gotta agree with a 9mm SMG, perhaps a 1911 in .45 (I just like 'em) as back-up.
A shotgun is okay (it pushes them back if they get too close), does considerable body damage; but once they are in on you like that all the documentaries that I have seen indicate that you are toast. Best to keep them at a range of over 50 yards. AR 15 is actually a great choice, as you can carry alot of rounds and have enough umph to put them down with a head shot (carbine length is all you need).
Personally, I would get an M1 or M1A and find a secure elevated position to snipe from, but if they are not gunnies they might be more prone to grab some power and try for a run and gun.
One of the greatest challenges in life is proper preparation for the inevitable zombie invasion. So many varieties, so many choices. One must be proficient in pistols, rifles, shotgun, grenades, claymores (they might be around at that point), and good knowledge of all explosives is helpful.
Just remember, it is your brains they are after, do not underestimate the advantage of a good helmet and body armor (a simple bite anywhere is worse than death). It is coming, how are you preparing?

If in Australia I would sugest Lee Enfields (they are everywhere) for rifles and for shotgun style points the IAC leveraction, every bugger seems to be buying them too.:)

Gotta love Correia!

I didn't know they had beer in Utah...

But I do have to differ...

Remember that ONLY accurate and penetrating head shots count. A .308 cannot be used as rapidly/accurately as a pistol-calibre carbine.

In deference to 1928 Thompson - spray and pray doesn't work for zombies. Instead of dead zombies, you get pissed off zombies who are missing parts. And a cleaning problem.

The Beretta Storm could be the ideal solution... It does use 92 mags, right? Or a Marlin .45 camp carbine and a .45 1911... Or a Ruger-based system.

Same ammo, same magazines.

If you need a designated marksman, give 'em a scoped .223 AR, but don't expect 'em to use it indoors or at close quarters. Remember - it is NOT about knock-down power. It's about head-shot accuracy.

Besides, rifle rounds will penetrate FOREVER, and they'll gleep up the merchandise in the mall. Do you REALLY want your new fur coat to have a hole and zombie brains on it?

Shotguns could have a minor place, but very minor - more as a multiple device portable claymore. Strap a half-dozen semi-autos to a wheelbarrow, and point it at the approaching herd and start the trigger cams... That'll slow 'em down.

Don't forget the inevitable hand-toZombie desperation scenes! At some pint you characters will need a ubiquitous crow bar. They come in handy all sorts of ways.

Dan

OK, that FBMG page was funny.

Here's the direct link, I think:

FBMG Zombie Loadout Kit

Price: $21,999.99

Due to the high volume of customer requests, FBMG has pooled our vast corporate knowledge to produce the industries only dealer endorsed Zombie load out. We unconditionally guarantee this loadout for Zombie outbreaks involving up to 100 undead*. Other company’s Zombie kits claim to be good for Zombies, but they don’t take into account the new super fast Zombies. Here at FBMG, we take our undead seriously, fast or slow, we’ve got you covered.

It is a well known fact that the new Army ACU pattern was computer designed to make it less visible to the human eye. It is less well known that these same properties make the wearer practically invisible to Zombies. The vision of Zombies is greatly degraded due to poor blood flow to the eyes of the undead.

Recent experience with the Huricane Katrina Zombie outbreak in Louisiana demonstrated this clearly. National Guard Special Forces Soldiers with the ACU found that they could move among the undead with impunity. The failure of the 5.56mm M-4 to provide single shot stops is reflected in this load out. The effect of the MARPAT used by the Marines has not been studied. The blue camouflage patterns adopted by the Navy and Air Force actually seem to attract the attention of Zombies.

WARNING: This load out is designed for individuals who have seen at least three modern Zombie films. The shooters lack of familiarity with Zombies may result in failure which will not be covered by the warranty. Please list the Zombie movies you have seen on your order form.

...

*Disclaimer: FBMG does not guarantee the Zombie Loadout for outbreaks of greater than 100 Zombies. If customer is devoured by the undead, FBMG will provide a full refund of the customer's money to their next of kin, provided that proof can be provided that said customer was actually eaten by Zombies. The FBMG Zombie Loadout is not guaranteed against vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, demons, doppelgangers, Cthulhu or his minions, giant radioactive animals, chupacabras, wendigos, sasquatch, scientologists, space aliens, mummies, Frankenstein’s monster, or major league baseball. Void where prohibited. All applicable NFA rules apply.

Welcome

If this story is going to take place in your home country then I would think you would have to use guns still legal to own in your country. Which would be break open shotguns, revolvers, lever action and bolt action rifles. Though you could add firearms that your surviors have collected from dead soliders, and police. Such as the AUG assault rifle, pump shotguns, and semi-auto handguns.

Cricket mallet. Hands-down....

Though failing that (and assuming you don't want to go with the shotgun) some nice sub-machine guns would do nicely. MP5s, Mac-10s, Uzis, Tec-9s: they'd all get the job done. However, I'd personally like a Saiga 12-gauge semi-auto shotgun, myself.

Zombie fascination??

Please excuse my ignorance / laziness to search, but what is it with some gun guys and zombies? Is it an inside joke?

I consider myself very pro-gun. I'm not discriminating against the zombie believers, just curious.

Eh, I've just flagged all of the lines around my house as "Monster Blocking."

</obscure computer game mapping reference>

I'm no expert, and I don't play one on TV, but here's 1 thought.

In a SHTF type scenario:

1) You can't kill wild packs of dogs - all dogs are Air Bud, or Beethoven, or Benji - the ASPCA would come for you first.
2) You can't kill goblins - I think New Line Cinema owns them - destruction of corporate property, don't you know. (/Tin Foil Hat is now Mandantory Gear!)
3) You can't kill marauding bands of humans - that would violate their civil rights and the ACLU will leaflet your compound for weeks! (Thus curing the problem of forgetting to save enough TP.)
4) Animal stampedes? Please! We know there are No Such Things!
5) Aliens - They came in peace! And you're going to Klaatu their Verata Nictoo?!

So... what's left? The Undead! Who's going to be on the side of brain-eating, civilization destroying monsters?! (Besides other lawyers?)

Thus - Guns vs Zombies! You practice trigger control, moving from cover, Escape & Evasion, Situational Awareness, and above all - Hawt Chicks in Skimpy Clothes!

Lotsa reasons to like Zombies.

  • When someone asks why you need that much firepower, suggesting "Zombies" redirects privacy piercing questions in a humorous lighthearted manner
  • It's Politically Correct to kill however many Zombies you want to
  • Talking about Zombie Ballistics is less morbid than planning a mass homicide of living invaders
  • Planning for a Zombie Invasion, regardless of the statistical likelihood, allows people to temporarily immerse themselves in fantasy and promote creative "provider instincts"
  • Zombies are a less intelligent prey to hunt, but still carry the inherent threats of hunting the hunter
  • Zombies encourage Self-reliance and Preparation
  • Some zombie exercizes are futile as there can always be more zombies out there, you'll never get them all. Much like the original Pac-Man, there is no end, so skill is ultimately measured by how long you last

There are many more reasons to like Zombies, these are just some of mine...
