One - take your pick:
M70
700 BDL
Remington Model 7
Bergara Timber/Woodsman
Tikka
Weatherby Vanguard

Or two of any of these - take your pick:

Axis
783
XPR
RAR

Model 70 feather weight in .270 or 30-06 if I wanted a pretty "American classic" (even though they're not so American anymore),heirloom type rifle. That I take out on nice days and try not to beat up.

Tikka t3 in whatever caliber for a reliable accurate woods gun that I don't my hunting hard with.

Sorry MosinT53Hunter, can't always be all things to all people.

But for grins sake would you rather have a pristine K98 or pristine Swedish K96?

Hmm, tough one. I'd have to take the Swedish K96 though. Odd rifles gets me going more than the usual K98. The more dings and dents in the wood, the better. :)

As much as I would want to pick one Tikka... or maybe a Winny 70...

I'd probably go with an XPR and a RAR. I can get the XPR in 300Win for long shots at big game and a RAR compact in 7mm-08 or 243 for everything else in the lower 48.

(Having said all that, I would knock the XPR up to a third "middle" category and knock the Vanguard down to the same "middle" category... where you can pick 1.5 rifles hahahaha)

I faced that very choice a couple of years ago.

I chose ONE Savage Axis along with a boatload of reloading components with what I would have paid for the second one.

For what I ask of it, the Savage has yet to disappoint me.

And you'd be really surprised with how much once-fired brass, bulk bullets, primers and powder you can buy for $279 (which is what the Savage cost at the time).

I see your point.
But then again, I was looking for a budget rifle (just picked up an XPR due to the $100 rebate) and I included the XPR into the RAR and Savage Axis category. Along with T/C Compass and Venture and Howa 1500 without the Weatherby pricetag.

Fun mental exercise!

Commercial hunting rifles are all pretty much the same. The difference between an entry level commercial hunting rifle like an Axis and a higher end rifle like an M700 is the stock material and finish.
Totally agree with milsurps being a great deal more interesting than any commercial hunting rifle. You can have 5 different rifles that all shoot the same ammo.

Bergara woodsman 7mm mag(already have a timber)

Tho a pair of rars. One in 6.5CM and one in x39 would be mighty tempting......

Been hearing good things about the Bergara barrels and actions. Their us hq is in my neck of the woods. Never held one though.

So I'll throw in Begara in a boring .308 and a Tikka in 6.5 Swede.

Depends on the use. If pure accuracy is paramount, Tikka. For an all around do it all no excuses rifle that could be depended on to work in the harshest conditions, M70.

The 700 isn't an option.
The Bergara is an unknown at this time, but I'm watching and listening. It may be a winner.
The Vanguard is a good rifle, but too heavy.

In the budget category I'd take 2 RAP's. None of the rest.
