69A8F400-FE19-45F7-A42B-758FDA5E9304.jpeg Hi Guys,

In the process of completing my WWI service rifle series and I’m still missing a few. Three of which are a mosin, 1886 lebel, and carcano amongst others.

What service rifle do you like the most of this era? It can be from neutral nations (like my Swiss rifle pictured). But no prototypes or old reserves rifles. Curious what you guys think.

Sporterized ones.....

I've always been facinated with the straight pulls, never owned one tho.

I've owned 1903s, and Mosins, but have not had the rest yet either.
I can’t agree more about the straight pulls, which is also why I’m looking to add a 1905 Ross to the collection.

As well, I can’t bring myself to make a sporter out of a correct rifle, I do however like salvaging poorly done sporters and turning them into a quality custom rifle. Rifles like the A-square 1917’s are beautiful

lol some guy won't like you said that. i like sporters to, i wish i known you wanted a straight pull i just sold my 1895 steyr
It's one of my favorite poking sticks.....

And pretty much everyone here already knows I won't cut up any gun that someone else might want, but about 1/2 of what I've owned have been beat up, or neglected, sporterized projects.

I'd really like a Ross as well, tho again prefer to get a sporter, preferably a factory sporter.

Oops, I lied.
I had a 1917, 06 for about 15mins.....thing should never be chambered in anything smaller than a 404, that actions a brick.......
And never really answered the original question.
Besides being bulky, I think I'd prefer the 1917. Otherwise small ring mauser, or 1903.

Absolutely, the ones A-Square made that I saw were in 500 a-square, and 577 tyrannosaur.

Rick James?

Sorry......

Anyway, it's an acumulation of some really nice features, and hell for stout. Given my proclivity to trying to blow myself up (or so I'm told since I go off the res in load data), I really appreciate that hefty action.

For a WW1 service rifle I would have to go with my favorite, the Springfield Model 1903. Love the feel and balance of it along with the way it handles.

The Mauser. I have more experience with the 98K than the Gewehr 98 since I own or have owned a dozen of them and only shot the Gew 98 once.

I'd still prefer that.

Second would be the 1903 Springfield.

Can I say the Russian contract Winchester Model 1895? Powerful cartridge, flat gun (I like a non-pokey gun), rapid firing, accurate, and takes chargers so capacity and reload speed are on par with most rifles of the era.

Second, the SMLE No. 4. Jungle carbine was very handy (had an Indian post-war version) but I think extends to the "no rare / prototype versions" rule.

But all in all, I'd take a 9mm SMG.

In my part of the world you never see a Ross. I've read the bolts assemble funny... if it's not just right, it'll blow back in your face.

Yeah there was an assembly issue, tho there was also a fix that prevented it I believe. Just don't put the thing together wrong!...besides its not that big a deal, you'll only do it once.

I'd have to GunBroker a Ross, there's only one guy I know who MIGHT have one.

I do prefer the Swiss Gew M1911, with a very close second to the Swedish M96. Both of these are tempered a bit though, as far as consideration of "Service" goes. The Swiss was never battle tested, and the Swede still used an inefficient RN bullet at the time.

As far as combat goes, I have to give the nod to the M1917. The British Enfield certainly gets high marks for rate of fire. but IMHO given the doctrine of the time, range and firepower of the 30-06 round in a highly accurate platform gets my nod. The M1903 is indeed excellent, but the M1917 is IMHO more rugged and inherently accurate. People are just prejudiced on it because it doesn't cock in 'Murican fashion.

If we are talking about WWI, then my favorite is the SMLE.

OP, if you are building a WWI collection you need a Pattern 14 to go w your Model of 1917.

If you are building a WWII collection you need a Type 99
