Putting a little more power in a $15.00 Daisy

Okay, the new 1938B tubes I have are the seamless tubing type and the bores look centered. The crowns are present, although as can be seen there's definitely room for improvement. The shot tube shown on the far left of the group photo and also shown alone came from a gun that was very accurate.

May mean nothing but the know-to-be-accurate tube, while not perfect, looks to have a better crown than the new unknown accuracy tubes...

The one barrel I have been shooting has the chamfer off center. Got my buddy redoing it. If I can get it back in the frame—-properly we’ll see if it was a problem.

Along about the time this thread was started I decided that my ideal BB gun was going to be a Daisy lever action repeater that would shoot 400 fps and do it as accurately as possible. Little did I realize what a tall order that really was! It has taken most of three years and a lot of help, but my dream is now a reality: My #1 Red Ryder is now shooting 420 fps and can put 10 shots inside 1.23" at 10 yards using Daisy zinc BBs from WM (and this will improve, no doubt about it). I am happier than I can put into words!! I received a lot of help from hinz57 and he will be the first to point out this has been a community project- so thank you one and all. Without the help of everyone here, this would not have been possible.

My gun as it is currently configured is using one of hinz57's custom 499 shot tube and a precisely bored front sight/barrel plug that fits the 499 tube like a glove. Along with that it’s using his custom air tube and my HP spring. The stock trigger has a lighter pull, the blade reshaped and smoothed and the anti beartrap has been removed. The plunger tube and piston are stock 1938B parts.

The stock is from my good buddy Shane, who doesn’t post here but he does stop by to see what’s new, so thanks again Shane, you’re “one of the guys” whether you post or not. And I would encourage anyone who wants a truly awesome maple stock, or a refinished and/or modified factory stock to give him a shout. PM me for contact details or you can reach him through his eBay store, Rest-O-Mod.

I recently installed a 3/4” tube Weaver C4 4x scope, it was popular in the ‘50s and ‘60s with rimfire shooters. It has a tip-off Weaver mount that attaches to the Lasso scope rail I got from PA. There are much better scopes and I even own some but I like the look of the Weaver, plus it’s light. But I’m not used to using a scope; in fact the three groups I shot using the Weaver on my gun are my first. I shot the groups sitting, forearm rested and the buttstock shouldered. The third group was my best and that makes me confident the groups will improve with practice. Besides getting used to the scope I need to try different ways of holding it while shooting with the forearm rested.

While this is a big milestone for me, it in no way marks the end of anything- there are still a LOT of good things yet to come, so stay tuned!

Very nice! I have your HP spring installed. Getting 310fps. Haven’t drilled the air tube. Apparently it’s worth doing. Drill to 1/8” ?

Drilling it to 1/8 is difficult to do, and if the air tube is made with tubing that has a visible seam, don't do it. Early on when we were still using shimmed '38B springs, I was able to drill a few of the 'seamless' air tubes to 3/32" and one or two to 7/64" and it definitely helped. The main problem I had was finding a long enough drill bit and then to not break it in the process. This is much better done using a lathe set up to drill with. A drill press could be used with careful alignment and holding everything securely while drilling. Drilling by hand is not something I'd recommend anyone else do, but if it was attempted, use plenty of lubricant, back the bit out often to clean swarf, go slowly and avoid overheating.

hi all,,, just a quick question. what is the diameter of the piston and abutment on a model 25 Daisy?
I have a model107 with rubber piston thats bad..hoped they might be the same...bb

The 25 is 13/16", not sure what a 107's size is but if I had to guess I'd say it was the same as the 25- they used that size in basically everything early on.

Thank you,,that's what I was hoping.the seal was detereated so it was hard to get a good measurement.as I remember as a kid, this was a hard hitting gun..but after 60 years we both have lost a little spring bb

Probably been addressed many times—-anyone lubricated the plunger cup/cylinder with anything other than the motor oil Daisy recommends?
Thinking of silicone and Ballistol. Used the silicone in the spring guns. Ballistol seems to work well in everything I’ve tried.
Back in the leather cup days maybe a petroleum Based oil was the only option. Thoughts.

I'm no help, only use oil. I did try Superlube grease once, a small amount around the cup OD along with oil on the wiper. Was about the same as oil alone.

Dave, I say use it and report your experience with that combination vs conventional oil. I quite certain that it won’t hurt anything. May be better. All I can say for certain that too much lubrication is as bad as too little.

Very interested to hear your experience with it. I’m certainly all about trying ideas out. Sometimes they really work!

Got the LW shot tube installed! Results.

Have no sights at this time. Planning a very solid Picatinny rail/scope. Then can shoot for accuracy, lots of ideas developing. Stay tuned!

Astounding MV aside for a moment, that crown looks killer!
Thx! I was hoping that the form I decided on wouldn’t bother people. I’m not really sure how the shape affects accuracy, as long as it is uniform and square to the axis. Main reason that I did it was for ease of loading a bb in! I tried loading with the muzzle faced off perpendicular to the tube axis. Kind of hard for my arthritic fingers to get the bb in the hole without it getting away!

Ease of loading was the first thing I thought of when I saw it. And to my eye it's also very pleasing aesthetically. As far as I know, as long as the crown is square and clean it'll perform as it should. Most crowns are configured to add some protection from dings and such, something your design does as well.

Here is the Picatinny rail that I mounted on the 499B. The rail worked out fine and I love the sight just wish it was a little lower. I guess a new stock with a higher comb is next.
Thanks Mark for making the gun available!

I'm happy you're enjoying it! The rail looks like it was made for the gun- good job. I've been using a magnet to hold my BBs when I shoot my muzzle loader model 105.

When putting this gun back together I did enlarge the transfer port in the abutment being careful not to alter the part that holds the magnet. The inlet to that hole was also chamfered. Alignment of the hole with the barrel remained good. The new seal lip was chamfered and a new abutment seal was installed. Unfortunately there was no increase in velocity. Coating the outside of the spring with open gear lube did tame down the spring twang during the shot cycle but may have also contributed to there being no increase in velocity. I like the smoother shot cycle.
Hinz has made some real progress and a lot will depend on how the accuracy test goes before I proceed much further.
After working on european and american airguns for years, working on this Daisy is a refreshing change.

Well dang...

Changed every variable all at once...
105B to 1998

Different abutment, same modifications, 4lb magnet

Diana spring cut to 7-7/32”, no angle corrected preload spacer

Will have to take it all apart and check everything. I didn’t like how tight the abutment went in. I need to make a steel preload spacer. Check the air chamber finish and seals. Everything....kind of starting over again....

Scope is too high. I have a solution. Endless work.

Really hated going from 552 to 537 hi #’s

More contemplation required!

I was able to sneak out to the shop for about 45 minutes this evening. Big disappointment.
After hinz's success with a longer barrel I thought I'd give it a try.
Put a Crosman 2100 barrel in the lathe and threaded the end of it. It is a .177 barrel with rifling. Screwed it into the 499b and was off to the chony. What a disappointment. 342.8 fps. Ran 5 more shots all with match BB's and the results were very much the same. Then screwed the 449 barrel back in and the velocity went back up to 409 were it started out.
Four things I can see happening here. Because it is a soda straw barrel without adequate support the barrel is vibrating during the shot cycle causing the bb to rattle around as it travels down the barrel. Think tuning fork. Also the rifling could be causing problems. First because of drag and second air escaping around the BB through the rifling. Fourth the barrel bore is at least .002 larger. If all four things are happening this is never going to produce satisfactory result.
I have a couple of heavier Chinese barrels that I'm going to try next week.
This is kind of fun :)
