Hey guys,

I recently got my service weapon the Cerakote treatment; basic camo pattern on the externals and Cerakote Elite on the inside of the upper receiver and the BCG.

I’m having some issues and was hoping to get some information on here (my armorers don’t seem to know).

The inside of the upper receiver, the charging handle, and the bolt carrier were all coated with Cerakote Elite, the new high-speed coating. However, before even firing the rifle the Cerakote was already wearing off just by charging the rifle. I’m literally wiping off the black Cerakote that is gumming up in the receiver. I had this rifle done at one of the best applicators on the west coast of the U.S that I chose very carefully since this is something I am going to be using downrange. Needless to say, I’m disappointed and looking at other options.

Originally wanted MicroSlick on the BCG and upper receiver interior, since I read that it penetrates into the metal substrate and has excellent properties and goes on virtually without added thickness. I think the “regular” Cerakote threw off tolerances between my BCG, charging handle, and upper receiver so it’s wearing more than the original OEM coating.

Does anyone have experience with microslick and if so, how has your experience been with it? I am probably going to ship the parts back in tomorrow to have them stripped and done in MS.

Having years of experience with hot rods I’ve always been leery of wonder coatings.

It just seems if something were necessary it would be used by the military, competitors, etc.

Maybe I’m wrong but it seems the best thing is an AR made of quality parts and to use a good lubricant. Keep it clean and be kind to it.

That said I’ve seen videos of torture tests of bare bone ARs that survived insane abuse. So it only makes me believe that you don’t need these expensive coatings. Worse as you’ve seen they mess with the right tolerances and make your gun less reliable not more so.

I’m interested in hearing what others say, but I don’t expect to hear many folks disagree with me. So maybe I’ll be surprised but I’m doubting it.

Did they not bake the coating? Sounds weird to me.
I have experience with Cerakote but I have no experience with Cerakote Elite.

You should probably use the same coating you already use. . . inside your engine.

For bonus points, you can apply said coating to your AR using your dipstick, thereby utilizing your engine as a giant gun oil pre-heater!

I coat the BCG and trigger group with Motorkote, I use an old pan and heat them up in a toaster oven for about 30min at 200 deg. I do that when new and then annually. I also use it to lube the barrel each time after cleaning. My pistols enjoy a coat annually.
When I was driving a big truck the addiction of Motorkote lowered temps in the rear ends and transmission by 10 to 20 degrees.

I have used the TiN and nickel boron and a bunch of similar ones. Including fail zero. I’m generally a fan ON INTERNAL PARTS. Just makes it easier to clean. However it’s certainly not necessary.

Cerakote is sometimes good on EXTERNAL parts but I would never put it on the internal parts. Ever.

Cerakote is merely a thin paint coating; of course it will wear off readily from serious wear areas.

Cerakote Elite had a big boom last season as an internal coating for precision match rifles. The “standard treatment” is Cerakote Elite inside the action and DLC on the bolt. It’s exceptionally slick. Guys are rubbing the DLC off of the bolt within a season (figure around 10,000 cycles), with the Cerakote still looking like new. I haven’t done either of my match rifles with it, but a couple buddies on our state club have - it’s exceptionally slick, and remains slick even in dusty conditions, and holds up very well. I’m at a point of needing the bolt on my Seekins to be re-DLC’d, and I have thought hard about doing the action in Cerakote Elite too when I have that done (which won’t happen until Jan, get through this match season, shoot a couple deer, and then rebarrel and refinish). Not sure I want to spend that extra money. I had Defiance do my entire action and bolt in DLC for my new rifle - when it wears, I’ll redo the bolt in DLC, and shoot the inside of the action in Cerakote Elite.
