H&R .32 top break issues

I sort of "inherited" this old .32 H&R top break. It has been sitting for perhaps 20-30 years. First I shot a bunch of lube everywhere I could.
Opens and closes, and ejector function correctly.

Attempting to cock the hammer, it goes back and locks there. Actuating the trigger (it's already back in the SA position) does nothing. Hammer will not fall.
Pulled the main spring (leaf type), more lube, and by exercising the trigger the cylinder rotates, hammer goes back, cylinder block rises. Since there is no mainspring, hammer remains back with trigger pulled, but the hammer will move forward with light finger pressure.

Sure looks "obvious" how the spring is installed, but either there is something wrong with the spring or with my installation. As soon as the spring is installed, the hammer/trigger will not move at all.

Does anyone know the "trick" for these things?

Thanks in advance, Rich

First, is this a DA or SA gun? Any idea what model? (Pics are always a help... hint hint.)

So with the hammer spring removed, pulling the trigger with the hammer cocked (in SA mode), the hammer is free to fall and hit the primer? But the hammer jams when its spring is installed? Man, either you've got the wrong spring or it's installed backwards.

Thanks for the reply.
DA revolver, no idea what model. I have been on this board since 2005 and I'm not sure I've have ever successfully posted a pic here.
Usually I have my wife post the pics to her website and then post a link here...best I've been able to do.
But I'll take a few and try again....

Edited to add...actually, my wife does have a pic posted on her site.

I wandered over to gunpartscorp.com and scanned through their schematics looking for top breaks with that shape hammer spring. And had another idea... maybe it's the hammer's geometry, not the spring. I wonder if at full cock, the spring's seat on the hammer lies under and forward of the hammer pivot peg. In that case the tension-ed spring would be pushing the hammer in the wrong direction. If so, and you can force the hammer forward (to hit the primer) with thumb pressure, at some point the spring will overtravel, and bang.

Most likely you need to break it all down and clean up the crusty crap build up. There is a small flat Trigger spring under the trigger guard that's known to break. I have of these and had to cut, trim and fit new springs on both.

Thank you to all who replied.
I did note that with the hammer removed, the trigger is not spring loaded to the forward position, so the broken trigger spring sounds like a strong possibility.
Anyway, I don't have any interest in keeping it--not a BP guy, and I don't need another project.
So I put it on GunBroker starting at .01--it's going to find a new home.
@carbine85, if you have fixed them before, here's a good opportunity to fix another one. Price is right :)
