1911 Shootout $4,000 vs. $2,000 vs. $300

I’ll challenge you (the OP) to a duel, pick your best 1911 and I’ll run my crappy duty pistol at 7 yards.

Some times (especially with handguns) the Indian matters more than the arrow.
Pretty funny

Well the OP is discussing the arrow, not the Indian. Didn’t you learn in grade school science class that in order to properly measure one variable, you must eliminate the others?

I think most people realize the shooter is the biggest variable. That’s not what’s being discussed.

The proof is in your targets. T Sauce probably make a good truck gun. Would I like a NH? Hell yeah but this retired guy don't see spending that on a fire arm. I'll stick with the middle of the road quality stuff with accuracy. Colts, Kimbers, DW. To each his own though...

My Nighthawk Thunder Ranch Combat Special was arguably the “cheapest” one they make but was still on the very wrong side of $3k. It wasn’t reliable out of the box with the 7 magazines I tried. Unsurprisingly, it had to go back to the mothership. I just got it back and the custom shop there replaced the barrel, extractor and slide stop. They massaged the trigger as a freebie and dropped it from 3lbs to 2lbs. Now it runs like a scalded cheetah.

The truth is, it’s the only unreliable 1911 I’ve ever had. Even my rattletrap Remington Rand never had a malfunction until the firing pin broke at 87,000 rounds. All would put 5 rounds into 5” at 25 yards. The Nighthawk will do 1” off a bench with 200 grain SWCs, so that’s what I paid for. Still, the T-sauce looks like a damn good deal and one I’d be happy with too. Hmmm… I think I remember seeing one at my LGS… IMG_3452.jpeg

T-Sauce basic, Dremel tool, Flitz, polishing bits for Amazon, some lighting springs… $500-$600 & some fun work, and you got a Night Pigeon!!!

I bought it used for $2,000 with 8 or 10 NH mags, and a bunch of original parts. The last owner had them do a bunch of upgrades by NH.

Would I pay $4500 for a NH 1911??NO? But $2,000 from an owner who I know his reputation for only the best stuff & service. All day long.

Gun shoots like a dream, anything I put thru it runs and it’s reliable too.
I’m going to put the old Factory Night Hawk Parts on my T-Sauce!!!! Best idea EVER

Mark Mark --- WHY ? If your T-Sauce is running GOOD, why take those parts out. How will installing NH parts be any better ?

Mark, next time shoot at 15-25 yards from a rest. I’d be interested to see any differences in accuracy. Your test wasn’t without merit as it demonstrated potential differences in triggers and sights for one thing. Maybe you can tell the difference in overall quality and accuracy offhand at 6 yards but IMO it would be better to try them rested at longer ranges as well.

I’m working on a 180 grain SWC load for long range. Never really shot from rest would be interesting 4 show!

Haha! Love the way you think, Mark!

“Night Pigeon” is a fantastic name. If we can get some artwork together, I can paint it on the hood of my ‘77 Trans Am instead of the flaming chicken.
you got a 77 Trans Am!!!! always wanted a mullet, home made tang top, little Southern Rock playing in a Trans Am! Now that’s Wealth!!!

I've had several 1911's over the years, Springfield, Colt, Auto Ordnance, and several Kimbers. All shot reasonably well, some needed tweaking. All in all I was satisfied with each.

I've even won a few impromptu competitions with a late 90's Kimber Classic that I picked up new, it was the best of the bunch. When it was time, I had it rebuilt with Wilson parts. That improved things nicely.

Then I got a Wilson Combat XTAC. Yes. It really is a different animal altogether and worth every penny.

I'm doing my best to wear it out but it's going to take a while.

Would like to see you repeat your test with 230 gr FMJRN with Bullseye or W231/HP-38. More of a traditional 1911 .45 ACP load. Interesting.
those Just came in the mail! and I do like HP38!

Challenge expected

was thinking HP-38- 4.8 - 5.2 - 5.4 a little warm but doable

around 6-7 yards

Even my plebian stainless Ruger will do that. Well, it would but I am not sure the indian is capable any more. If I ever get my bum leg fixed I will find out. It was used and cost me a whopping $600 with an additional Ed Brown barrel and bushing. Switching barrels and bushings it shot almost as well as with the EB setup. Ruger bushing was a sorta sloppy fit so I replaced it fitting it myself. That improved it enough to hang with the EB so it's back to being all Ruger except for the new bushing and Hogue rubber grips.

I wouldn't choose it for a bullseye competition gun but since I am far past being capable of even trying that it's fine for me. I could ring steel or kill caliche rocks at not too far distances with it last time I was able to shoot it and that's good enough for me. Cheap factory to LSWD cutter bullets cause it no feeding problems. The only magazines I have used are the 2 factory ones that came with the gun.
