My Nighthawk Thunder Ranch Combat Special was arguably the “cheapest” one they make but was still on the very wrong side of $3k. It wasn’t reliable out of the box with the 7 magazines I tried. Unsurprisingly, it had to go back to the mothership. I just got it back and the custom shop there replaced the barrel, extractor and slide stop. They massaged the trigger as a freebie and dropped it from 3lbs to 2lbs. Now it runs like a scalded cheetah.
The truth is, it’s the only unreliable 1911 I’ve ever had. Even my rattletrap Remington Rand never had a malfunction until the firing pin broke at 87,000 rounds. All would put 5 rounds into 5” at 25 yards. The Nighthawk will do 1” off a bench with 200 grain SWCs, so that’s what I paid for. Still, the T-sauce looks like a damn good deal and one I’d be happy with too. Hmmm… I think I remember seeing one at my LGS…
