Today's range trip convinced me that I should have a rifle between 22lr and 30-06 that is good for 200yds. I want something fun for the range and an AR15 would be just right, but it would be cooler if this rifle fired a cartridge older than 223.

My criteria are:

1. a decent trigger. My savage accu-trigger has spoiled me, standard issue M-16 triggers are good enough, but anything noticably worse like a primitive bullpup is not acceptable.

2. Accuracy and Ballistics: 200 meters. 8 inch groups off sandbags. much less recoil than any 30-06. (4 MOA is better that I can do without sandbagging the rifle and myself.)

3. Retro cool points, cartridge introduced before the 223. Best if cartridge predates 1955. Modern production rifle is no-issue, just similar to something produced before my time.

4. Reasonable price, say no more than $1000 and preferably that $1000 gets several mags and a case of ammo. Factory ammo, Brass, and dies available. (but not necessarily at every gun shop.)

5. Fun at the range, faster shooting than my bolt actions, good ergonomics to shoot off hand. This is not for hunting or home defense, but any rifle is better than a sharp stick if I change my mind.

Leading Options
1. Arsenal AK 7.62x39. the cartridge was born in 1943. After market triggers available if I want to tinker, but the Arsenal is good without tinkering.

2. Mini-30. 7.62x39 again. Ruger fandom is in my blood.

3. M1 Carbine. getting slightly harder to find. but lightweight and user friendly.

4. 35 Remington Model 8 ( or similar). maximum retro cool points if one can be found that isn't broken or under museum glass($$$$).

5. Marlin 336 30-30. sold everywhere, less expensive, more cast boolits, shooting cheap until TEOTWAKI and beyond.

6. AR15 but in 222 rem or other older caliber.

7. Other lever action, lower recoil cartridge i.e. BLR, Savage 99

8. Lower end AK. I will spend the purchase price on tools and parts to make the trigger and ergos better.

9. Any other semi-auto I don't know about.

Lets hear what members like to play with at the range.

Personally I'd rather own a marlin lever rifle or a mini-30 for that purpose. Or an 18" takedown BLR in .308 with the straight laminate stock and a scout scope. Yeah, that would be nice.

I voted for the Marlin 336, though not my preferred lever action. My favorite is easily the 1894c .357 magnum. Faster then a bolt, more fun then an autoloader and good for just about anything I'd need to use it for.

Love my PPSh-41 for a short range carbine. It is very accurate and out of a carbine barrel the 7.62X25 round is really humming. Add in the 72 round drum mags and you have one of the coolest range toys available. Not to mention it would do very well as a HD/SD rifle as well.

I've never felt the need for a spl. rifle for short range... My "go to gun" works at short or long range, and by useing the "one rifle", i feel i'm better at both ranges.

For me, that's what it's all about, being the best that i can with the weapon that i have.

Hello friends and neighbors // After being much impressed with DMs set up I went the poor mans route with a Savage 24V .30-30 over 20ga.

Already a favorite.

Of the Firearms listed above by the op, 336,AK,M1 Carbine, I can tell you the last to go would be the M1 Carbine from my accumulation.

So, I pick M1 Carbine if Ammo is plentiful.
Saiga Izhmash AK47 if ammo is not.
Marlin 336, if you want a brush and woods (or smallish blind) alternative hunting rifle.

I happen to really like my Marlin lever action in .357. Short and easy to swing around in brush country. Yet is good at 100 yards.

At today's ammo prices, the only thing you'll get within this price range is an old self-loading 22 rimfire

i would say arsenal sgl 21 series i paid $750 for mine about 2 months ago & couldn't be happier. for $1100 you should be out the door, maybe a little less. about 6 mags, 1000 rds. of ammo, cleaning kit, sling & mag pouch. this round should be good for 200-300yds. i wish i would have bought one of these years ago. big plus for the ak are that they love the cheep steel cased ammo which is about $220-$240 per case of 1,000.

The people have spoken...and they're right. The M1 Carbine is one of the most fun rifles short of a .22LR. Everyone that shoots mine wants to take it home with 'em. Also, it makes for a heck of a HD carbine if loaded with SPs or SJHPs.

Yeah, M1carbine definitely. 340 savage 30/30 0r 222 both highly underated and thus underpriced. Remington mod 14 or 141 in 35rem, still retro kool but easier had. My brother has a 340c carbine in 30/30 thats scary accurate and will completely realign your thoughts on what 30/30 will do. Never underestimate the appeal of out shooting the guys at the club with a pawn shop rifle, truly satisfying.

Thanks for all the answers so far. Surprised that the M1 beat out all the other semi-autos combined. I was expecting some vz58 fans to tell me the trigger is better than any AK. And no love for the Mini-30 either. :(

I guess I will go see if any local gun stores have an M1 carbine sitting in the back.

I have always liked the Minis, and I started the VZ.58 Club so that should speak for itself (and there's more to it than simply a better trigger)...but it is what it is, the M1 Carbine is a blast to shoot. It's cheaper to shoot (if you're frugal and handload), has less recoil so getting back on target is quick and easy, has excellent sights, and enough pop to let you know you're firing a real rifle (or blow up reactive targets to good effect). Were I going to war (or just wanting a bit more oomph), yeah, i'll take the VZ.58 (or my crazy M17S).

:)

Sorry for "No love for the Mini30", I'm a huge Ruger Fan but I'm damned if I can figure out some of their marketing decisions. I remember when the Mini 14 came out prettymuch everybody loved it. But the a hue and cry arose for one in .308......a ..well a M14?!... I Know...I didn't get it either, any way after a few false starts it came out, in 30 Russian, not what I would have called it in a post cold war world but hey. In a few years ammo would be plentyful enough for it to make since, but by then they taper off available production. I think they are a pretty decent rifle, but limited supply has priced them out of practical range, when you consider Simonov does the same thing, better, cheaper, firster. Its like when thousands clamored for the deerslayer again they thought they would "improve" it first. uh huh...
