Variety is the spice of life. You two are missing out!

Currently there is :
17HMR
22lr (9)
223
6.5x55
7.62x39
7.62x54R
303 (2)
30-06
32acp(2)
380acp
40 S&W
10mm
45acp
44mag
410 bore
12 gauge

This is a very fluid list - it changes and evolves over time. I have owned other calibers before which are not listed now... some of them will stay gone, some of them will appear again some day; as will other calibers that I have been curious about. Specifically, I will be adding at least one more shotgun gauge, and for sure a .22 mag. Probably at least one more 17 as well. :D

For the rifles:
.22
.30-06
7.62x39

The .22 is an old bolt gun that my dad handed down to me. The 7.62 is a Saiga because I've always wanted an AK. I bought a Savage 30-06 over the summer as a hunting rifle.

.270 win Cz 550 premium/Weaver Grand Slam 3.5-10x50

Shotgun
12ga. Stoeger Uplander

For a caliber used in what is often called on the Internet "cheap Commie" guns (plus ARs, Mini 30s etc), the 7.62x39 is still quite popular.

Is its popularity mostly because of the price for Russian-made ammo?

I can't believe I never posted in this thread.

I have 2 pistols in .22 and would like to add a rifle in the near future.
In .357/.38 I have a S&W revolver and a Marlin lever gun.
In 7.62 I only have a decent SKS but would love to add an AK at some point.

I try not to expand calibers unless I have a good reason, and preferably more than one weapon that I would like in that caliber.

Question: Why is it that, so frequently, someone will use "caliber" when they really mean "cartridge"? It is a misuse that has become widely accepted (just read through this thread) .
Y'know - .30 Carbine, .30-30 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, 300 Ultra Magnum are all different cartridges but they are all the same caliber.
It's a pet peeve. Rant done.
Pete

PS: I load about 16 calibers (.224, 251, .243,. .356, .357, .308, .311, .312, .375, .416, .429, .452, .457, .468, .500, .510) but about 40 or so different cartridges and gauges.

I have no desire for any other cartridges, aside from maybe a .375 H&H someday.

Thinking about adding .35 Whelen and .25-06 to the herd.

I have rifles chambered for:

.223/5.56

.308 Winchester

.357 Magnum

.375 H&H Magnum

.45-70

The .223/5.56 rifles are for HD, general utility, and in the case of the AR15, police patrol rifle; I own my duty weapons.

The .308 rifles are general purpose rifles. This could be anything from "heavy" defense to hunting, and of course, recreational shooting.

My .357 Marlins were purchased for utility and possible HD, but I have almost certainly decided to sell/trade them, as I doubt I would ever reach for a Marlin .357 in preference to a Mini-14, AR15, or .308 BLR.

The .375 H&H rifles were purchased in anticipation of an eventual African trip, but life's circumstances have largely eliminated, or at least seriously postponed, any African trip. I plan to keep these, a Winchester Model 70 Safari Express, and a Ruger No. 1 Tropical, because I still dream of Africa. OK, so I guess that relegates them to collector pieces, but who knows what the future holds?

The .45-70 was purchased for a fun rifle. I wanted something a bit lighter and shorter than the No. 1 Tropical, but with some thump. Maybe I will hunt a buffalo with it, someday.

I reckon five cartridges is a fairly modest "footprint." If I part with the Marlins, I will still have numerous .357 Mag revolvers, so my overall cartridge inventory won't change.

I like multiple platforms for the same common rounds:

.308 pump & autoloader
30'06 -same-
8mm bolt & autoloader
7.62x39 -same-
