Your grandfather is a smart man. :) I am nearly 100% sure that all the barrels are interchangeable, all my 870's have interchangeable barrels. One is a regular and one is a wingmaster. Also the companies who make barrels don't specify years, which says to me that they all fit.

I usually don't push or pull on my 870, I like to hold it neutrally and I honestly don't think it will wear a Mossy or an 870 out no matter what you do as far at pushing or pulling, those are both far to reliable for this to be an issue.
