Ok, potental idiot question:

What is the level of cross-compatibility between the Ruger 10/22 and the 77/22? They appear to have the same magazine, but I've not compared them side by side. Do they accept the same barrels? I'm sure the stocks won't cross, but what about trigger groups?

Sorry if this is elementary or common knowledge. A search didn't turn up anything definate.

at one time I had a 77/22
It's a bolt action rifle---costs a lot more than a 10/22
Mine was SS with a black plastic stock
It's been about 20 years---can't tell you anything else............

Thanks! I'm familiar with the differences, bolt v semi, I was wondering about parts compatibility.

I believe that the magazines, while designed the same, aren't interchangeable due to slightly different shapes.

I would hazard a guess that this is because of countries that treat magazines that fit semiautomatics differently from magazines that fit manual actions, in their laws.

I used to have a 77-22. My 10-22 mags worked fine, but they are a bit different and I've read where others have had some feeding issues when using the wrong mag. Never caused a problem for me.

The 77-22 mags have a flat bottom to match the contours of the bottom of the rifle. The 10-22 mags are rounded on the bottom.

Well, I guess that answers my question. Thanks, guys. I was wanting a bolt .22LR, and was going to give the nod to the 77/22 simply due to the myriad of upgrades available for the 10/22, but if they aren't compatible, I'll just make my decision based on the rifle.

I have a 77/22 made in 1984 IIRC and frankly I can't think of a single part that needs to be replaced. It works just fine the way Ruger made it and will shoot in the 1/2" range at 50 yards with federal bulk. And those are 10 shot groups too.

The mags will interchange but the 10/22 mag sticks out the bottom a little on the 77/22.

The 77/22 has became my favorite 22. I thought about a CZ 22 but the $30 each for 5 round mags stopped me dead.

The barrels can be made to interchange but I don't remember what it takes to do so. You might check rimfirecentral.com and they can tell you real quick. A plus to the 77/22 is you can get a new mag, trigger guard and barrel and convert to a 22 mag or 17 HMR.

The magazines for the 77/22 and the 10/22 are interchangable, but they are not the same. The 10/22 magazines are rounded on the bottom and will stick out slightly from the stock of the 77/22. Call it 1/8 of an inch, but it's not that much really. And only on the forward end of the magazine. The rear fits flush. They will function just fine.

The reverse is true. A 77/22 magazine is flat on the bottom, and recesses into the 10/22 magazine well slightly. Again it will function just fine, but is a little harder to extract.

I bought this 10/22 a couple of years ago, and didn't get a chance to shoot it for a month or so. I didn't notice until then that it had a 77/22 magazine installed. If you look carefully at the magazine well, you can see how the magazine fits up into the well. Worked just fine though.

The other parts I have no real knowledge of.

Would love to own one of these but would like it if Ruger updated the stock profile to the Hawkeye's, so I could have one that matched my .308.

There is a decent selection of drop-in 77/22 barrels on the market. The new 77/22's, starting this year, are all threaded.

Ain't they pretty?

To the OP. I think I remember reading that you can use 10/22 barrels on a 77/22, but they need some kind of a shim or a spacer to fit correctly. I didn't pay much attention to it, because I've never had any desire to modify one. but as always, RimfireCentral.com is your best bet for questions like these. Those guys have forgotten more about Ruger 22's than most people ever knew.

Ruger 10/22 is a fun rifle. I bought mine brand new back in 1986. Think I've taken it out shooting about 7 or 8 times. Still in great condition.
