10/22 vs marlin 60?

A model 60 was my first firearm at 10yrs old, so I grew up with one. My first 10/22 came ten years later and the Marlin has fallen into disuse ever since. The Marlin is what it is right out of the box. The Ruger is a better rifle in every way, with the distinct advantage of being able to become whatever you need it to be.

I pray for the man who buys his second rimfire rifle. Nothing good will come of it; like buying two rabbits.

Sadly, this i’nt all of ‘em, not by half, and I can name a dozen more I’d like to add.

My first was a 77/22 Ruger, long since departed. I’d love to have it back as it was my first ever firearm. Traded it for a Marlin (bolt action) so I have no brand loyalty to speak of. I am planning a full cleaning on my cousin’s Model 60 this summer since it didn’t go bang last range day. In fairness that poor rifle was 10 years in a safe and who knows how many rounds since its last cleaning.

The choices indeed are for .22 semi autos. The 511 has not been made for some time. The 512 is in currently being produced and IMO is much better than any Remington, Savage, Ruger or Marlin semi-auto .22. To each his own.

Fat fingers. Meant 512. Just don't care for their semi autos at that price.

I'm hearing both sides of the m60 don't shoot dirty claim. Doesn't seem like too big a problem. I keep the guns clean anyway so iI the itll be ok. Price is still looking attractive on little miss plane Jane.

My bride-to-be has a Model 60, needs a new trigger guard, buffer, and trigger work. After pricing it out she'll likely be getting a new rifle instead. I also prefer the Ruger for the included scope rail which makes ring options more plentiful. My stepdaughter-to-be has a 10/22 stainless. It needs ammo.

I got rid of my Model 60 awhile back. I don't really like tube fed semiautos, especially in a .22. It is much easier to train muzzle discipline in a new shooter with a magazine fed rifle.

The 10/22's were close enough, and like others have said, you can buy whatever you need to make it what you want. I got tech-sights and a Volquartsen hammer to go to Appleseed on one, and it has become my favorite .22 rifle. I also got another Marlin, the 795 which is essentially a mag fed model 60. It does fine as well, although the trigger needs help, which isn't as easy as the Ruger. It also wears tech-sights and plays backup to the Ruger.

You can't go wrong with either, but to me the Ruger feels like more of a "real" rifle. The Marlin feels like a BB gun in my hand. I don't remember that feeling with the old wood model 60.

My model 60 will out shoot my 10//22. Both are stock and have scopes mounted. The tube magazine on the 60 doesn't bother me at all. I made a couple of rubber tube reloaders for it that I load before going to the range. It takes about 30 seconds to load the rifle. It takes longer to reload the Ruger.

Doesn't take longer to reload the Ruger 10/22 if you carry a couple of extra loaded magazines in your pocket. It takes about 2 seconds. You can buy three packs of Ruger 10/22 10 round rotary magazines all day long on ebay for less than $35, shipped.

To add to the temptation, I just put a lighter trigger spring in my Savage A22. They run something like ten bucks at Gun Shack, and you can install one yourself in 15 minutes. Can't wait to try it out. That 3.5-pound factory pull was just too much for my highly cultured trigger finger. With the new spring, I actually had to back off the lowest setting because it was scary.

Model 60 was my very first rifle and I've owned three 10/22s, and while I have some issues with the Ruger, if I had a choice between the two, I'd get that one. My 60 was an early 80s model, horrible trigger that got better over time, but definitely didn't like running dirty while all of my 10/22s seemed to handle protracted sessions with ease.

If it were me, I’d be looking for a Savage 06. It’s one of the best and longest running production 22 autos ever made.
I have a 60 and a 10-22, but I prefer my marlin 39M. I just shoot too many bullets with an auto.

I believe the Nylon 66 needs to be cleaned after 37,000 rounds or so.

I try to not get involved in religious arguments and 10/22 vs Marlin 60 is DEFFINATELY a religious argument.

My church teaches that all religions have a part of the truth, naturally mine has MORE of the truth than yours, but having religion is better than not having religion.

As my father used to say "What ever blows your skirts up."

mag tube vs rotary magazine, tip off scope grooves verses receiver being tapped, ratchet ramp elevation vs loosen a screw and move it, "works well out of box but can't work on it myself" verses "a ton of after market stuff and easy to work on"

Seriously each person has to make their own decisions about what is important to them at this point.

There is no "better" or "best" for everybody all the time when it comes to .22 rifles.

Well, I didn't very approval this time around so I'll be continuing my research a while longer.
I like picking thru used racks (when I come across them anyway... not a huge thing around here like it is for some of you guys).

Christmas will be here soon.

I have a very used 10/22 I bought off a guy who needed beer money when I was in the Army. It proved to be very accurate and reliable (it's a very old 5-digit one.) Oddly enough, what has given me fits is the stupid rotary mags... I have NO luck with those things. It's very likely related to the ammo, but I've taken them apart and tuned them, and still no joy. I currently have it set up as an Appleseed rifle with TechSights for my daughter... who got it for her 18th birthday.

I bought an older, almost NIB Model 60 a few years ago... I like it a lot. I would have to say it's about as accurate as the Ruger, now that I have a Williams peep sight fitted to it. The tubular mag is kind of a pain, but therein lies some of it's beauty, too... it's certainly more reliable than the Ruger mags (in my experience.)

I don't really think you can go wrong with either of them... just depends on what you are looking for.

Man oh man yet another Marlin 60 vs Ruger 10-22 debate. ..... On a board full of opinionated grown men!..... Might as well be the Ginger versus Mary Ann debate:D:D The model 60 is like Mary Ann. Right out the box accurate great clean lines light handling does its best if you don't let it get to dirty."......... The 10-22 is like Ginger is just fine the way it comes, but has tons of accessories to dress it up with, doesn't mind a little dirt;)

Hmmmmm...... Suddenly I want to go Shootin.....

Heres what I did bought, own , and enjoy both for what they. I really do like both, and it has been handy for teaching grand kids about different magazine types. Beside its WAY cheaper to have and enjoy both rifles than it would be to have both Ginger and Mary Ann.;)

Besides CatPop was right when in doubt just pick up you Marlin 39 It's always the most fun choice .....Tentwing
