In his 1859 book "The Prairie Traveler", Randolph Marcy recommended that those outfitting for a trip across the American West would be better served with an "Army" revolver instead of the "Navy" version. His reasoning was along the same lines that you mention.Now with the unimpressive results I've seen from a ball I'm surprised the .36 was considered effective. I'd certainly prefer having had a .44 instead.
