1863 remington 31c pocket revolver i just got this a couple of weeks back

Ugly Sauce,

I have a few of those. Have you tried ffffg in your? A nice increase in velocity, at least with the old round ball.

Kevin
Yes, I run 4fg in all my revolvers now. I believe it is pistol powder. If my eyes did not deceive me, or if the chronograph wasn't broke, I was getting 1000fps out of my 1860, with a little over 30 grains the other day.

What weight was the projectile? With round ball, easily believable.

but that begs the question, is there a slug/bullet available for the .31"? That may add a little ooomph to the gun, although with my 1862, I can only get 15 grains under a 140 grain slug (which is a bit long in .36") and it's not enough to out perform the ball. The ball over 23 grains of 4fg out penetrates the slug. With a shorter slug results might be different.

I wonder if brass doesn't hold up better in .31" than it would/does with the .36's and .44's? My interest in that pistol, besides just the cool-factor (or cutie factor?) would be as something to carry for small game, in which case accuracy would be my main concern.
I wondered about that once too and I just assume everyone these forums has a one track mind that brass = bad, steel = good. I was never interested in paying the money for the conversion cylinder, that AFAIK is only able to shoot .32 S&W, not .32 Long wadcutter, and for black powder use I could find a top break antique for less than was the 63 Pocket and conversion cylinder would cost.

I would think brass would hold up ok with no more powder than it holds.

Yep they are small, it took some getting used to. Just a strange feel compared to the bigger revolvers. Not a "bad" feel, just really different. On the other hand, sure feels good on the belt. Like it's not even there.

If you get another, have it sent directly to Jack, and then from him to you after he works his magic on it. Out of the box, they are troublesome. Mine is now 100% reliable. Of course, if you prefer cap jams, and hammer blow-back, over rotating cylinders, developing anger issues and regret, and buying ten different sets of nipples thinking that will help...then DO NOT send it to Jack!!! :)

I think mine was fun and my then 12 year old daughter liked it (and pronounced it “Her” gun) until the hand spring broke and I have not “Gotten A Round Tuit” on fixing it.

I do not recall our powder load of BP but we used Single Aught buckshot loaded off the gun, then used the lever to insure seating uniformity.

Priming was not much fun.

All those that have issues with the small size and how the loading is a problem, not too mention how odd the chamber size is with these pocket Remingtons, this is the reason I really want Pietta or Uberti to come out with a repro of the New Model Police, which would be a 5 shot .36 that has a real trigger and is only a bit bigger than the pocket Remington.

I've been thinking its time to ask Pietta again to start doing them, last time they were open to the idea, but were busy with current orders.

Is the New Model Police the same as the Pocket Police, or is that a Remington? As Uberti does produce the Pocket Police. New Model Police must be a Remington. ??

Yes, it’s a small frame .36 five shooter… nice guns if you can find them. I just love everything about these guns. Compare the shape of things here, like that trigger, simple elegance, and then look at the stuff made by some of the Italians…

U S,

Colt made the Pocket Police and the Pocket Navy. Both were 5 shot, 36 caliber revolvers. One (Pocket Police) had the round barrel and creeping lever. The Pocket Nany was a scaled down version of the 1851.

No idea what Remington made.

Uhh, I guess you could say that the NM Police was Remington's version of the Colt 1862 Police and/or Navy as they were .36, used a smaller frame than the NM Army model (Colt did the same), and made the cylinder's 5, not 6 shots.

It was the smallest, lightest version of the Remington New Model revolver design that has a standard trigger and not the janky spur trigger the pocket Remington had.

Okay got it. !!! I have seen that pistol before, but could not recall that it was the New Model Police. Thought maybe "New Model Police" and "Pocket Police" terms were being confused. But it was I, me myself and I, who were confused. :)

Yes, would love to have one, although my Colt 1862 leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. Laser accuracy, and 100% reliability, thanks to Jack. It's a keeper.

The 1862 Colt has the potential advantage of being able to be converted to .32 S&W Long wadcutter with a cylinder and barrel swap. I say potential because nobody has bothered to make a conversion cylinder for the '62 Police or Navy, I guess they figure the market for those is so small, yet they do make a cylinder for the '49 Pocket in .32 S&W.

The Remington could do .38, but would have to be stuck with hollow base wadcutters due to the groove diameters and I've never liked having to be stuck with one bullet or having to use heel base bullets that I have to cast for.

The conversion cylinder for the 49 should work in the 1862 versions, same frame. Not sure if barrels would swap but if not, or you prefer the 1860 style barrel, it is a simple liner installation.

Doesn’t Uberti make a cartridge version of the Pocket Police?

Kevin

I seem to recall hearing about it at one time, along with a .32 acp open top police model. Never seen either.
