Anyone know what this marking is?

I tried doing a quick trace in photoshop to make it stand out better.

The gun was bead blasted at some point and possibly refinished, and I can't find a manufacturer on the gun anywhere.

The only other markings are a United States Property mark and a serial number, No 2493xx

I don't know if any of the markings are correct/original, but any info anyone could provide would be appreciated.

That is a U.S. Ordnance Inspection Stamp representing Lt. Col John M. Gibert.

Col Gibert inspected Colt 1911 pistols at Hartford from Aug 10, 1917 through March 29, 1918 (Approximate serial numbers 230000 to 302000).

USGI 1911 and 1911A1 frames were not marked with the manufacturers name. To determine the manufacture you have to go by the serial number (blocks were assigned to different makers) and the inspector's stamp.

Ah yes, "Da' Fuff" is indeed awesome. :uhoh:

Why without adult supervision he was able to:

1. Lift book off of shelf.

2. Open book.

3. Look up required information.

4. Write post with answer to question.

 :neener: :D

Thanks a ton Fuff. Now that I know something about it I'm suddenly much happier to own it.

Now all i have to do it figure out how to fit my initials into a cool little logo like Mr. Gilbert managed to do.

Col. Gibert (not "Gilbert") did indeed have class. Most inspectors simply used their initials (sometimes enclosed in a box) and let it go at that. As for a logo, think of a western cattle brand with your initials.

Enjoy your pistol, and the history it represents. :)
