Just got back from a great hunting trip.
We packed in this year to a high basin with a couple of lakes. Day one started at 7000 feet and we ended up around 10,000 before we found a good spot to camp for the night. We went light and just used medium bags, bivy sacks and slept on the ground. It was a cold sleep for sure but fun to keep it simple. Then next day we were up about an hour before sunrise and moved to a good spot to start the day. About 45 minutes later we spotted a two does and a forky about a mile away. I spent the next couple of hours closing the distance and getting within shooting range. When I got as close as the terrain allowed, I set up on a rock with my shooting sticks and shot the deer. I was using my Winchester M-70 in .30/06 and it did the trick. It then took us a few hours to go back and retrieve our gear, clean and pack the deer and head down the mountain. All in all it was a great trip. I wish I would have seen a bigger deer, but I am thankful for all the meat this beautiful mountain buck will provide my family.

The best part of the whole trip was cutting meat with my daughter. She loves to reload, shoot, and hunt with me and that is the best part of it all.

Here are some pictures of the trip:

Pretty excited about muzzleloader season beginning in 13 days.
I've been spending a fortune on corn to feed for the last month or so, and have been constantly monitoring trail cameras to see what I'm dealing with.
So far I haven't seen any real trophies, but I've got this guy showing up nearly every day. He usually comes to the feed at night, but I do have a few pics of him during shooting hours. Hopefully we'll cross paths. He may not make the books, but he's a pretty good one.

I hit the state land yesterday, weapons of choice: The Jeager and the 1860 Colt. Second to last day of ML elk season, so the State Land was and has been pretty heavily hunted. And, once season starts, they head over to the Wildlife Preserve. But...ya never know when one might wander back through, and if you are not there, how can you shoot it???

This is the "Big Meadow", private land, and it lies between the two chunks of State Land. During the spring and summer you'll see lots of elk on it when it partially flooded. They like the water as much as the moose do. It's a good 1000 acres and I've seen herds of up to 50 elk on it. Yesterday I saw two off in the distance running across it, must have been spooked by other hunters. There was at least three or four other hunters out there, although I never crossed paths with any of them.

The only dead animals I have to show for a long day in the woods. Lunch time! That was my last fair weather hunting for the year, now I'll wait for the late seasons in November-December. Those dead fish say: "Thanks for listening".

Beavers started hitting my folks' place again, which I discovered while doing some lawn work for them. I noticed several downed and missing trees including small and medium-sized trees. Set up 75 yards from the creek and took them both on the opposite bank at 85 yards. I have video, but the video is more boring that the picture, LOL. 6.5 Grendel & Hornady SST 123 gr. bullets.

Hate those things. Keep damming up my creek and cutting my plantings. Can't shoot them here. (SSS).

We had a okay-ish morning. Somebody forgot to take their meds and told me that they had… so we were loud, fidgety, and right on the brink of ridiculous, BUT we had fun and spent some quality time relaxing. Won’t be able to hunt that stand for a week or so… but the deer have sucked in closer to water sources since we are in drought mode, so I doubt that there were any around to witness the show.

There has to be more of a story here.... Nice hog!
Night hunting at local farm they have been mowing down. First sounder of about a half dozen adults and a few little guys showed up around 9pm. Picked what I thought was the biggest in the group and shot her (130#). The herd scrambled into the woods before I got a second shot. Not 10 minutes later a pair of piglets popped out of treeline on opposite side of field. A larger pig joined them which turned out to be a 120# boar. Loins went into chops, most of the rest is breakfast sausage and brats.
