Night hunting at local farm they have been mowing down. First sounder of about a half dozen adults and a few little guys showed up around 9pm. Picked what I thought was the biggest in the group and shot her (130#). The herd scrambled into the woods before I got a second shot. Not 10 minutes later a pair of piglets popped out of treeline on opposite side of field. A larger pig joined them which turned out to be a 120# boar. Loins went into chops, most of the rest is breakfast sausage and brats.

great videos!

On to deer season!
Good stuff!

Got my first ever crossbow deer later yesterday afternoon, an average sized doe. And I don't own a crossbow. Been using my buddies Excalibur crossbow last couple years, (he's got two), and I'm pretty familiar with it and it shoots good for me. Last couple years I've seen a few deer while using it but never one within range. So just before 4 pm an average size doe comes along and gets closer and closer. Stops just past a downed tree trunk that I lasered at 28.6 yards so I'm calling it 30 yards even. Just as the bow fired the deer jumped forward, They hear the bow going off before the arrow or bolt hits them. I think that's called "jumping the string" (?). Hit a little further back then my aim point as I saw it running away with the crossbow bolt sticking out of its side. Went less than 100 yards and stopped 36 lasered yards in front of my buddy who had heard my bow go off and heard and then saw the deer heading his way. It was probably looking for somewhere to lay down and expire when my buddy gave it a second shot, just for "insurance". We're calling it the "tag team daily double". I hit the left side, he hit the right; either shot would have been fatal all by itself. Even managed to drag it downhill and finish most of the field dressing before total darkness. Finished up with my headlamp. It was a good day; high temp was above average at about 60 degrees and sunny. Only thing I forgot was to put the crossbow on the deer when I took the picture. Should be picking up the meat from the processor late this afternoon... IMG_4848.JPG . Good times.

Didn't think weather was gonna permit hunting this morning so the FIL and I went out to the local power equipment place to pick up my new leaf blower. Decided we'd go on out there anyhow. Brought all three dogs despite one of them being notoriously gun shy then low and behold we had a hell of a time. Got 3 each. Pictured is our combined quarry with my weapon of choice my Winchester 370 20 gauge. Not pictured is his Ruger American .22lr. if you look closely you can see the dogs in the box IMG_20221112_133454841_HDR.jpg

Man that sound like it would put some hair on your chest! Wish I could afford to go up there. Had an opportunity to go once but it would have involved a year of working 7 days a week on dutch harbor island. What you shoot em with?

Is definitely different up here, Dutch harbor is brutal work!

I used 200 gr Hornady SST out of a Ruger Hawkeye 338 RCM. Great package for the "Arctic safari"

DF3D6E37-6470-4B63-A28D-CC74F61EB602.jpeg I took a freezer trophy yesterday… Kind of by accident… There was two bucks that were scrapping, and they both came out of a Thicket together… As they were milling around in my scope, I waited for what I thought was the big one to get ahead, and it was lights out (178 gr eldx out of a 308 win) As I saw the head pass Through my field of vision on the way to the ground, I was like “HEY! wait a minute”… and also observed the other set of much nicer antlers continuing south into the cornfield… I hope the wizened old character will still be around in muzzleloader. This one probably will taste better, as the other one was obviously really really rutted up…
And after breaking stride last year, it appears I am continuing my string of one shot kills, or perhaps starting another one.

Last day of muzzleloader season, this girl and 6 of her friends played around me for 30 min and no buck showed up. So she's going in freezer. Reloaded and let her lay, 20min later more does around me. Let her lay for an hour with other does around, no buck ever showed up, so I finally climbed down and loaded her up.

Opening day of a public draw three day state land Antelope hunt in the Eastern Plains of NM, Kiowa National Grasslands area. Forecast was rain, and it didn't lie. Very little activity scouting the evening before after setting up camp. All by myself as my regular companion was tied up with family obligations and I didn't have a lot of time to try and work in someone else. Early morning checking my known spots and in one of the better there is a truck parked out in the middle and several guys walking around. Moved on and stopped to glass, picked up a nice buck on a slope about 1/2 mile away, but he had picked me up as well, so other than shadowing each other it was a no go. The truck I had seen appeared and the 4 hunters were three generations of the same family. Nice to see them all out but the patriarch expressed surprise I was alone. But I'm an "alone" kind of guy, doesn't bother me.
Drove and walked for a couple more hours, than parked behind a ranch ruin and started glassing again. Spotted a small group intermixed with a herd of domestic cattle on open range. Crept to a windmill tower long extinct and settled in to watch. After about 45 minutes they started to separate and drift apart. Regretfully the cows were drifting towards me, the antelope across the slope. I watched a particular buck for a long while as they drifted across although never getting any further away. Finally they strted down the slope to the adjoining open grassland and when I finally got the opportunity I fired. (700SPS 270WSM, Vortex scope) The Buck faltered, then took a few tentative steps, the rest ran off. Suddenly he bolted before I got another shot off. I quickly (as quick as an old guy with herniated discs, a broken back, and fake hips can" quick") went in pursuit. He was obviously bad so it wasn't hard to get close enough to finish the job. But did I mention the rain? By then the sprinkles had turned to a heavy drizzle. As I retrieved him, field dressed and skinned him the rain increased (I've learned to provide relief for my bad back, much easier to work upright!). I got him loaded and headed for camp which was about 17 miles of dirt and caliche ranch roads where every dip was full of water and slick as snot. I got back as soon as I could, met a game warden on the way and had a polite discussion while he checked everything and mentioned a flash flood warning had come in!
Got to my camp, rapidly closed up, hooked up, and headed out. Only 4 miles to the highway it took 45 minutes to creep out including about a 15 minute wait for some guys crossways in the road to get free. A great hunt, I was back home with the quarters happily on ice in my truck by late evening, about 150 miles away.
Pictures are out of sequence but you get the idea!

That makes me remember my first year hunting. I was an overweight 12 year old that was soooo sick with strep throat but wanted to go hunting soooo bad… we hunted the first spot and then… my dad looked over at me in the truck and said… “I’m taking you home”;and I was out of school for a week… lol… I remember it hitting a point I really didn’t care, hunting or not. I had a fever of 104.5 I remember when I got home… and the next week I was better, and my Dad had it. No idea where he would have caught it….
Congratulations on the buck for sure.

That is one beautiful antelope. Heart-shaped front outline and great bases and prongs. I'm real glad for you especially since you're so banged up.

Did you score it?
