I'm jealous. I've been out 4 times since our archery season started a month ago (ends today). I've seen shootable does every time I went out including yesterday, but they were all of the "out of range" subspecies. That's OK though- next weekend we go to the guns and I got a 243 sighted in and ready to rock.
That was my muzzleloader season in a nutshell.

Gun buck season ended in the first hour of opening day for me yesterday. Can’t say I’m sorry either, as the high temp for the day was 17 degrees with wins to come up around 25-30 mph. Hunting in wind sucks! Not a huge rack, but good sized body. I still have four doe tags and an archery buck tag to fill. So as long as the wind behaves itself there is plenty of hunting left to do. Shot him at 125 yds with a 180 Speer FP out of my 35 Whelen. 6F2DF2CE-B413-4F19-BFC0-B35BA10067B2.jpeg

Fastest hunt of my life. On stand at 3:07, took the shot at 3:17. My wife has standing orders for a table trophy before antlers, so this big gal was a welcome sight. The doe ran 30 yards and collapsed. Bullet entry high on left shoulder. Once again Remington 130 grain CoreLokt in the Ruger .270 Winchester did all I could ask. Of course the real work began after the photo. Tough dragging in that brush. She got bigger while I was dragging her. I may be getting too old for this…

I’m not that old, but a bad back has me seriously considering options… anything to preserve the number of bends I have left…

I'm in the same boat, with back issues!

My buck was big, and he ran into some thick stuff, I tried but couldn't even move him, so I went home and got my tractor that has a "skidding winch" on the back of it. I could pull the wire rope and choker to the deer, so I did so and pulled my buck out with the skidding winch.

I honestly feel pretty silly hobbling around with a bad back and a bad knee at the “ancient” age of 35, but it’s a bit late to do much but try to be more careful at this point… mine probably dressed out around 180-190 lbs, and it was a drag on bare ground for about 250 yards. And my dad helped me out. But I hurt so bad the next day(and that evening) I questioned if it was even worth it for awhile…

My daughter went hunting with me last weekend. We sat Saturday morning and evening. Didn't kill a deer but saw 8.
It was a fun hunt. They're rutting here and we watched a couple small spikes chase does around like they thought they were hot stuff. lol Probably wouldn't know what to do if they caught them.
We were sitting in a huge stand (4x8') which is too big. Had the gun out the left window where the spikes were chasing the does in case an adult buck showed up. I look over my right shoulder and there's a big bodied 7 point looking at us less than 100 yds away. After a very short time, too little to get the gun 8' away to the other window, he turned and left.

Overall a lot of fun. We've got 4 weekends left so we'll get a couple before it's over.

Obligatory deer stand selfie.

My friend's son's first buck ever on the first day he got to hunt this season. Higher scoring rack than any deer I've ever taken. Poor guy is spoiled for life, but I'm ecstatic for him.View attachment 1116522
That young man set the bar high. Going to be tough to top that.

Looks like a great way to spend quality time and teach the you get generations about the finer things in life

1st tag filled, .270Win, 130 NAB, 263 yds:

The guys at the shop "aged" him, and believe he was no chit, 10+ years old based on tooth wear. Got him while he was trailing a couple does, so maybe "10" is the new "5" in mule deer years.

Me two days earlier on Mulie overwatch, 12 degrees 17MPH & gusting, the 1st day was 2 degrees and gusting to 29-30. Using every layer available while still maintaining the ability to hike. Gave up the gloves and went with mittens after the 1st morning:

We boned out meet before leaving, so today is processing and packaging day.

Nice! Reminds me of my first deer. -17 with 35mph winds. Snow storm, good old fashioned SoDak blizzard moving in… and I shot it with an hour left in the season… haha. Can I ask what kind of tripod you have? And is it a rail mount? I like the looks of it.

Congrats Chuck.
That old buck must have been eating the viagra weeds to still be chasing does at 10yo.

Ps. That looks pretty cold for TX.?

It's MT, but with that wind chill is was cold for freakin everywhere!

Hog Saddle PF4 "Piglight" carbon fiber with their GNN XB-44DL low profile ball head. On a couple of my longer range hunting rigs I mounted Swiss Arca plates from Salmon River Solutions. They're pretty small and can be remove if you don't need them:

I spent quite a bit of time (and rounds) practicing with this setup and just throwing a small "mini-waxed bag" from Thunderbird Long Range with Git-Lite fill. Both work, bag is faster, but clamping in is just a bit steadier.

Congratulations Chuck.

Thanks...now gearing up for our season and... Squirrels!!

I'll be in touch once the deer are done, one way or the other.
