I don't like lever action for children. Many don't have safeties. Loading can be difficult for them and unloading forces them to cycle every round. If a shot isn't taken, the hammer must be lowered after the trigger is pulled.
If it's one of the cross bolt safety ones and it has a hammer spur, most of this is negated.
Handi rifle has the lowering the hammer issue also.

None of us can name any rifle that won't have a learning curve.

Thanks guys, lots of good ideas to rattle around. I'll take her to the gun shop and have her handle a number of rifles and try to narrow down a caliber. I kind of like this .223 idea because I kind of wanted a .223 boltgun to play with for myself too. .243 and 30-30 still seem like viable options as well.

Sounds to me like y'all are sharing a hobby... sounds like good quality time to me.

Yeah she's a real great kid. She does karate 2-3 times a week for a few years now(dedication/discipline), likes to fish and hike and climb and more recently she's excited about going to the range. She asks lots of questions and seems like she will be a very well rounded outdoorswoman and will hopefully be able to take care of herself in this world.

I'll teach her all I can although I'm still picking things up as I go. I kind of want to get into reloading now too so we have something else to share...

Actually, a CZ 527 Youth Carbine in 7.62x39 would win you "DAD OF THE YEAR". IF you can find one and it meets your budget parameters.

See https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog...Centerfire/CZ-USA+CZ527+CARBINE+7.62X39+YOUTH

Cheap ammo, as powerful as a 30-30, and quality that will make it a gift that will last her a lifetime a lifetime.

She may never outgrow it. But then she may have to pry it from your fingers. For reference, I am 6' and hunted with a short length of pull (12.5") rifle for years.

I'll check it out. I too like smaller compact rifles, I am 6"3 and I don't mind the 12.5 lop on the ruger compact at all... you're making me wish I never got rid of my all weather mini 30 many years ago. I was dumb and got rid of it because all it would cycle with 100% reliability was Prvi Partisan 7.62x39

That short LOP can come in handy when adults our size (5' 11" to 6' 3") wear heavier coats. Longer LOP with the heavy coat and suddenly, if you're using a scope, eye relief may have just got aggravating.

Whether or not 7.62x39 is as powerful as .30-30 is another point of disagreement for some of us... I don't generally compare the two so much as consider each on its own merits. I do consider that CZ makes fine rifles and the 527 is probably another good idea.
