I am thinking of getting a 1911 in 9mm... probably with commander length barrel, full size grip, for both carry and just shooting at range. Does anyone have any experience with 9mm 1911s? Anything I need to know or look out for?

Who is making a better 9mm 1911, Kimber or Springfield?

I've never held a Kimber that I'd trade for a Springfield.
That said;

My Citadel 9mm (made by Rock Island) is quite awesome, and <$400. At 50', I can always pattern inside the 9-ring. Never a malfunction, and sweet. Highly recommended.

The thing I like about the Springfield is that the feedramp is part of the barrel, and therefore made of steel.

On the Kimber, I believe the feedramp is part of the frame of the gun, in which case with an aluminum framed gun, would you see wear and tear from bullets feeding against an aluminum feed ramp?

Is that an issue?

9's are fun to shoot in an all-steel pistol, with a good trigger, such as a 1911. I have a commander and a 5". If it is reliable enough, a FBI-type PD load would be a good carry. From my experience, and from what I have read, not all 9's are reliable enough to carry; some problems with magazines and particular loads.

Not meant to conflict with the intent of the OP's subject, but why a 1911 series pistol in 9mm-Luger?

I have a full size sig 1911 in 9mm. My gun is very reliable. The gun runs great with the factory mags and metalform 10 round mags. I tried mecgar 10 rounders but I had issues with the slide not locking back after the last round. Overall I'm very pleased with the gun.

Ed brown is making commander 9mm this fall. I have a FS ed brown in 9mm__LOVE IT

also have a DW guardian in 9mm( czcustom has them)--great shooter and light weight frame to boot

I don't have a 9mm 1911, nor have I ever shot one. Nonetheless, I'd love to have one. Seems like it'd be a sweet shooter with cheaper ammo. What's not to love?

I go back and forth with 9mm 1911s. I haven't bought one yet, but every time I get a new pistol itch, the thought of a 9mm 1911 comes to mind. But it's not time to scratch that itch for me just yet. For me, it's a novelty, a niche considering it holds less than most of my carry guns, and only a couple more than my pocket 9. While attractive, it's appeal hasn't won me over just yet.

In a nutshell, I want one, it's just not a high priority.

Most of my 9mm 1911 style pistols are double stack SVI/STI pistols but I do have one Springfield single stack.

The only problems I have had were with the magazines Springfield sent with the pistol had a burr from the punching process that wound up on the inside when they formed them. Bullet tip would catch and FTF. Knocked the burrs off and it ran like a top.

Springfield (from a Kimber owner)
9mm in a 1911 is the beast competition cheating implement ever devised.

An attractive alternative is the Springfield EMP in 9mm. Mine is an excellent pistol and gives you the 1911 platform while taking advantage of the smaller 9mm cartridge.

How do you figure that?
In IDPA it will be in a different Division from a .45.
In USPSA it will score Minor which is a handicap.
In NRA it is a Centerfire along with the few remaining .38s and many midrange .45s.

I very much enjoy mine. I have S&W mags and Check-Mate mags. Both work very well.

I had a Springfield Loaded 9mm 1911, I now have an STI Trojan 9mm 1911. I see a Springfield Range Officer 9mm 1911 in the rental case at the LGR I frequent. I'd highly recommend that anybody interested in one of these try one out, these are guns that are a lot of fun to shoot at the range, with really low recoil. You should spend some money on good aftermarket magazines, I have Wilson Elite Tactical mags, and these guns tend to be a bit particular about the type of ammo you shoot with them, but these guns really shoot well with Fed American Eagle 147gr. FMJ's, which is a really low recoiling round. Have fun shooting!

I have several RIA 1911's one is a 9mm commander that I've been shooting for several years. Mine had extraction issues that I solved by installing a Wilson extractor. Recently I brought it to my LGS to sell for me. After a lot of experimentation I decide my CZ75b was a better fit for me.

Last year I bought a RIA Tactical 9mm. Impressed me enough that I bought two more. They are no longer available in CA.

I always thought the popularity of the 1911 series pistols was due to the 45ACP cartridge. Now people are acquiring the pistol for the 9mm-Luger chambering. Cooper is probably rolling over in his grave.

I've owned, carried, and shot .45acp 1911s since 1982. When the CA SSE was going away, I decided to buy a few guns that would be much harder to come by after SSE. That list included a 9mm 1911, and I enjoy shooting it so much that I ended up with three. My three sons will appreciate them someday.

I'm not giving up my .45s, but I enjoy the gentle recoil and cheaper ammo of the 9s.

I like your idea. My first carry gun back in 1979 was a 9mm 1911. The 1911 style is time tested. The Commander-length barrel is a good compromise for a carry gun that will also see range time.
