A request, for an email mission. Geraldo Rivera slanders gun owner

OK, here's the idea behind the e-mail list:
  • We want to be able to drop the hammer on advertisers, editors, and whoever else on short notice. Basically we want an avalanche of e-mails/letters/whatever.
  • Sometimes the net gets spread wider -- it's one thing to e-mail Geraldo's producer; it's another to e-mail all of his advertisers. Oftentimes the detailed list gets drawn up later, and if folks aren't paying attention they'll send the initial e-mail and that's it.
  • There are folks who care, but who don't follow this board much. We'd like to offer them a chance to team up as well.
  • The list should be low volume, so it doesn't need to be filtered, and every mail from it will be actionable. If we need to discuss things, we can do it here.
We need to figure out the remainder, but for now I've created the list itself.

E-mail [email protected] to subscribe. It's not prettied up yet, but it's active.

I am sickened by Rivera's reporting concerning Wayne Chiang.
Heraldo has screwed up again and needs to be removed permanantly.
I will not support fox nor any of its sponsors until Heraldo makes an apology and is banned from your airwaves forever.
You have screwed up the life of an innocent man.

If I'm not mistaking Mr.Rivera owns a gun and has carried it after he received threats from some of hs interviews. I think it was on the tonite show some yrs back. Let's throw him out to the wolves and see how he likes it.

sent an email to fox, heavily borrowed from other letters here.

Dear FOX

I am sickened by the irresponsible, alarmist, sensational, 'journalism' of Geraldo Rivera. Geraldo's slander on an innocent man, Wayne Chiang, was nothing short of sickening. One can only begin to imagine the nonsense this man has had to deal with. An acquaintance of Wayne's that posts on a popular firearms web site informed those of us on another site that Wayne has received numerous death threats as well.

This is not the first time Geraldo has been irresponsible on national television. He is more concerned with breaking a 'story' than with truth, and his actions reflect directly on FOX News as a whole. I will not be watching your news program while Geraldo is still a part of your organization, and I will be making every effort to not support any of your subsidiary companies.

Rivera's actions are criminal, and I hope he is tried for them.

I eagerly await to see how FOX intends to remedy the situation.

sincerely,

My post on a message board that I run and also included in emails to Fox...

Me said:
I know the media wants to get the story out as quick as possible, not because they really care about informing the people but because it is good business. You get the story first and with the most sensationalism and your ratings go up.

But, at what cost? In this day in age of everyone being so quick to point fingers and place blame I just don't see why we can't manage to hold the media accountable for what they broadcast to the masses.

People look to the news media with a sense of trust, probably more than they should at times, and the media has a moral and ethical obligation to provide the best level or reporting they can. And that doesn't just mean the best catch lines, it means accurate.

I know some people saw the link that Katie posted in the Virginia Tech thread...it was to an Asian males Live Journal page and people were speculating on him being the shooter, which he wasn't. What I didn't realize until today was that Geraldo went on air to report this information. He went as far as to show pictures from the page, bang on doors near the guys last known address and more...all after being informed by law enforcement that the man in question was not a suspect.

I think it's sick that we would let the people that we trust to deliver us the news get away with something like this without even a peep. It disgusts me that this person, Wayne Chiang, has had his pictures splashed across the t.v. and internet and has now become tangled up in the whole tragedy that was the Virginia Tech Shooting. He had no involvement with the incident, but now must deal with the stigma, death threats and other things that come along with being labeled a suspect by shoddy reporting.

sent email to fox, geraldo & the main email link at Fox, stated basically the same as Billy H even though I really wanted to put a few other thoughts I didn't, thanks to the wife hovering over me.

Here is what I sent:
Dear Fox News,

I am shocked and disappointed about Rivera's knee-jerk accusation regarding the VT shootings and a young man named Wayne Chiang. Wayne Chiang, like myself, is a gun owner. Apparently that -- and the fact that Wayne Chiang is from Asian descent -- was enough for Heraldo Rivera to convict him of the Virginia Tech shootings. Why else would he plaster his personal information all over the mainstream-media waves and send a news crew to hunt him down, even after the police announced that he was not the shooter? That is beyond bigotry, not only against race, but because Wayne is a gun owner. I hope I don't need to tell you that this offends me greatly.

Although I have been a longtime supporter and watcher/listener of Fox News, I WILL NOT watch or listen to any Fox News programming until Heraldo Rivera issues a public apology to Wayne Chiang and is dismissed from his employment with Fox News. Surely you realize that he tarnishes both the reputation and the image of fairness and balance that Fox News strives to defend. Sensationalist hacks like Rivera are not fit to work in journalism.

I will also be contacting Fox News' sponsors and notifying them that I will be boycotting their goods and services until Fox News severs their ties with Heraldo Rivera.

I very much hope that Fox News will take an appropriate action to this outrage, and I will be standing by.

Sent the following to Fox News:

I have been a faithful Fox News watcher for many years, especially during the elections. I can remember when many of my friends and I truly believed that Fox News was 'The Place' to actually see a story reported truthfully. I have noticed the same kind of sensationalism creeping into Fox News as I would expect to see on most of the MSM news outlets, but overall I would have still rated Fox a step ahead of the competition. No more. I watched Geraldo's blatant attempt at being judge and jury against the innocent Wayne Chiang. I find it truly sad that the American media believes they have the right to attack an innocent person in such a way. Many people, myself included, have never really considered Geraldo a journalist in the past. I wonder how many will consider him a criminal after this epsiode. I will no longer watch Fox News, and I will inform your advertisers of my reasons.

At the very least Geraldo should publicly apologize to the person he publicly slandered. Sterner action on the part of Fox News would not be a disappointment.

Respectfully

To Fox

Even though he's on Fox, Geraldo is a sensationalist without credibility, has been for some time. His attack on Wayne Chaing is unconscionable. He's approaching "Rosie O'Donnell status".
What the hell is he doing on Fox?

:banghead: Dammit, I misspelled "Geraldo." As usual, you notice the second after you hit the send button.

Hey guys, dropping in. I've read the forums here from time to time but for some reason never joined. :uhoh: However, a BIG THANK YOU to all my supporters. It touches my heart in a personal way when things like this draws us together like a family. This Geraldo situation is creating a huge mess that keeps on growing and growing. I seriously thought this whole issue would go away but it just keeps getting worse. And tonight, I've lost it. I've tried to keep my cool, but with this new introduction of the whole CTV debacle. I've had it. You guys can go nuts.

Two pictures of Wayne?

Wayne: The first one was definitely you(@1:14), was the 2nd one (@1:33)
yours, too?? (nice rifle, by the way?)

You would think CTV, of all nets/stations, would know better.. There is
an Extensive Asian population in Toronto, near their HQ/Studio... Sigh..

Have you contacted them about a retraction?? Just wanted to check the status,
before moving on it..

Update: I've just sent e-mail to a friend who until recently was a columnist for Fox.. She
may contact you.. (although she's on the road at the moment..)

Hang in there!

Nice of them to throw in some of your pictures in with that last one...
I hope you got a good lawyer and are going to sue!
And it's good to hear from you, and I hope everything works out in the end for you.
Also, Nice collection!

I would second this as well. Look into taking legal action. I am willing to bet that you could make a good case for Slander/Libel or defamation of character.

That's stupid. If you want to setup a collection fund for legal fees I'll donate.
