That is an Excellent illustration. It is not just about laziness. If both parties are versed in the jargon, acronyms speed comprehension and improve communication.

When I worked at Intel Corp, there was actually a published dictionary of acronyms. When we first started working with telephony providers to do video and file sharing over hi speed ISDN connections the meetings sounded like an AA (acronyms anonymous) meeting. :D

Actually Tourist, the first year of the Pan is 1948.

I ride a 1949 Shovel/Pan.

4. Acronyms and l33t are a must if you use a cell phone to text message.

Not true. I use the King's English for everything including notes to myself and text messaging. I learned to speak and write in complete sentences with capitalization and paragraphs and that is how I communicate. If someone sends me a techno speak, or otherwise garbled message I send it back with a request that they translate it to standard English.

Yeah I know that makes me a PIA for the rest of the world.:(

Anyone who thinks the acronym usage here is bad, should spend a few years in the military. You'll be see how it isnt so bad here.:D

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think I EVER heard a complete sentence in the four years I was in.

if you think the firearms world is bad, don't become a pilot. we can carry on conversations for hours without ever using a real word that you'd find in a dictionary.

Yeah I know that makes me a PIA for the rest of the world.

I don't mean this as a flame so please do not take it as such. Knowing how to use proper grammar and punctuation has little, if anything, to do with modified modes of communication. It is similar to people here where I work that insist upon their e-mails being printed out, this practice only earns them obsolescence.

BTW, PIA lol. :D

I enjoy reading all the acronyms that I know.

I don't mind the ones I don't know but can figure out quickly.

I'm kind of peeved at the ones where it takes some extra effort to figure out or look up.

I hatethe ones I have to do some real searching to look up.

we are all lazy when it comes to typing, and i dont like kings english, because this is America, and we speak American. Now im going to go install some BUIS on my flattop AR.

Just don't get your acronyms from different fields messed up it took me about 3sec to figure out why the tech would write that a cat had a BAR...

Acronyms bug me. I grew up using the King's English and at that time there were few cases where acronyms were used.

Sorry, Grandpa Shooter - this IS the 21st century, and if you are reading this, you ARE on the internet. Blame Al Gore. Meanwhile, improvise, adapt, and overcome.

That said, no one who posts on this type of internet forum is concerned with Pulitzer prize-winning prose. I appreciate proper grammar, correct spelling pleases me, and my English teacher would be proud of me. Nonetheless, I don't hang around here to improve my communications skills, but to learn about things I don't know from those who do.

I imagine you could find many more individuals with your preferences on a board dedicated to, or run by, those with similar predilections. It's just not here.

I wonder if morse code had complaints like these......

"I grew up speaking English! I don't understand all this beepity boopity you kids are sending over your telegraph machines!"

LOL, I <3'd the PIA in the OP's follow up. I play WoW (World of Warcraft for the outsiders) and yeah, insider speak is way more useful for anything in the game where real time (RT) communication is needed. Or where you just need something PDQ. It's easier for me to /y LF Eng 375 for +10 scope! than to type it out all neat and nice. But sometimes it is refreshing to get neat and nice messages.

When I have time I aim for the proper use and capitalization of "The King's English" I have to admit that cracks me up and I think I'm going to start calling it that :)

IBTL *crosses fingers*

There is a major difference between toleration and acceptance. Yes, I have no real choice but to tolerate that people choose to be lazy, uneducated or inarticulate. I do not have to accept it.

By the way, I grew up in New England born to a family which can trace it's roots to before the Revolution, so, yes I did grow up using the King's English, with only a trace of the British influence. It wasn't until I joined the service I discovered just how poorly so many people wrote and spoke. Unfortunately it has only gotten worse since 40 years ago.

It will, in all likelihood, continue to do so. Can you tell me just what IS improving in modern society? No sarcasm... it's the long decline. But we know how it ends, so that's the good news.

All that aside, I'm sure you recall through history at least, that we did kick the King's butt and send him back to "Old" England. That's likely why we actually speak American nowadays, except for those of us that speak Southern. Oh, well. Please review my sig line. :D

Medical treatments esp. cancer, communications, literacy(on a worldwide scale) and hi-capacity single-stacked.45s
