I have kids, so I can't even contemplate leaving unlocked, loaded guns around the house. All mine are locked up.

The flashlight is a good idea. A big Maglite is safe to leave in any room, makes an effective impact weapon, and as a bonus light comes out of it when you press the power button. My wife and I each have one by our nightstands.

I don't see the problem with guns around the house as lond as they are hidden well such as under a magizine shelf or maybe behind some "worthless" family photo you have sitting on a mantle b/c theifs are looking for paintings not pics

The places I've seen burglars go through during the quest for valuables are: above drop down ceiling tiles, books, under beds, drawers, bottom of drawers, fake bottom to drawers, take everything out of the closet to look for a hidden safe, toilet tank, kitchen cabinets, air registers, ac filters, tear apart couches. I have helped several friends clean up after burglars hit their homes and it only takes a couple of minutes to toss an apt let alone a house looking for keys, and other valuables and if they feel safe they start thinking up all the other hiding spots.

They only things I've not seen taken were safes or storage cabinets anchored to concrete. But the keypad was hacked off by an axe.

One guy I know that my father used to work with lived out in the country. They took everything but the safe that was bolted to the floor. The day after he came home to a hole in the side of his house and his safe gone.

I won't say where exactly my guns for home defense are located but there's 2 pistols and 1 shotgun. The shotgun is in a location that requires me to grab it by the stock then take it out of the location, all of which is seconds. One pistol is in secured in a touch pad (DAC SportSafe) safe in bedroom and the other is near the main entrance.

I've always thought that a good location for such gun would be hanging from a sturdy hook just above the door inside a closet. Unless it's a walk-in, this spot is never really visible in normal usage, as you would have to look up from inside the closet to see it. This would *not* be suitable if young children are present who might be likely to play around or snoop inside the closet.

the main thing I have against the idea of hiding guns around the house is that you might forget they are there. Seriously, do you remember where the car keys are all the time?

Some might have thought, Rubbish, when they read this, but I bought a house once where the guy had left a pistol in a drawer in the bathroom. The neighbors said he always had a gun on him. They thought he was strange because he mowed the lawn with a gun and patroled his yard from the roof with a rifle.

Its like hiding a spare key...that clever brainstorm you had is known to every crook on the street. You're better off to carry your weapon in your home. A gun left "cleverly" hidden in a hollowed out book or under a cushion may serve to arm an otherwise unarmed intruder. If someone has thought to sell a hiding device or area in a magazine, then count on everybody knowing about it. Even if not used against you, if stolen in a robbery from an unsecure location in your home, you bear some responsibility for its ultimate use. You don't have a key under that fake rock infront of your door do you? I once was sitting in a car in a parking area...a guy pulls up in a BMW next to me, gets out with his running gear on, and "hides" his car(and home, I'm guessing) keys in one of those ingenious magnetic holders and sticks it under the fender...all takes place 6' away from me...talk about awareness!

We've got a few of those on this forum. LOL

The best place to have a gun is on your person. If you are worried about home invasions a good monitored alarm system that you keep armed when at home is a good investment. If you will not carry it I agree that the flip top lock boxes are good. I prefer the ones with the a mechanical lock that does not require a key or batteries.

Is it just me or does anyone else realize that stainless steel guns wont stick to those magnetic holders?

I am all for having guns stashed around the house, when thinking of a place to put them think like a thief. Anyplace you would think to look for goodies is a bad place to hide a gun

'Stainless Steel' refers to about 100 different alloys- while many are amagnetic, not all are. I just checked my AO 1911TC and it's quite magnetic...

hell, I'm only 37, and there's been times in the last month where I took my weapon out of the holster for whatever reason, walked to another room, and then wondered where my gun was 30 minutes later.

Good thing the kid knows not to touch. This explains why I always have it on me now.

If you "hide" your gun in your house, be prepared to be confronted with IT if you come home to a burglary in progress.

In other words, NOT A GOOD IDEA!

My WASR hides behind my open closet door. Sometimes it's not hiding. I have an apartment so I'm not too worried about a break in but I do have a door stop/alarm on my bedroom door so if it did happen, I'd be ready before anything happened.

If you're handy, hollow out wallboard between two joists, insert a dowel or nail to place your revolver barrel on into one of the studs. LEft or right depending on strond hand scenario, cover the void with wallpaper to match the balance of the room (yea, I said handy) and remember to remember where it is. Although dust will acumulate, it will fire afer 5 years, that's all I've been able to test.

Wow! That's the craziest way to hide a gun I have read yet!
