I've been thinking about what happens if the ban of so called assault weapons and hi-cap handgun mags really happens. What do you do, if the federal government has a mandatory buy-back of verboten items, say any AR with removable mags, any 5.56 or .223 ammo, and any 11+ round handgun mags, for say, 15% over purchase price if you have a receipt, or some schedule that they publish, if you don't have a receipt?
Will you buy a new California style AR with a fixed 10-round mag? The AR would be not much fun at the range with a fixed 10-rd magazine--I'd spend half the time between cease-fire's just reloading. Would you buy a supply of 10-rd mags for your 9mm? The 9mm loses a lot of its appeal with a 10-round magazine. The people who prefer to have a lot of smaller bullets over a few big ones, will have neither.
Would you switch to a .45, or a 10mm handgun? Or maybe a Desert Eagle with .50AE? At the least, I can see the 1911 having a new appeal. I carry a SA XDM-45 4.5" with 14rds, because my Colt is only 9 rounds, even though I shoot the Colt a little better. With a 10 round mag, the XDM is less appealing.
Replacing the AR. Since I shoot almost exclusively at a range, maybe I'd just get a pistol-caliber .45 carbine, like the Hi-Point if I'm on a budget, or a Beretta CX4 Storm in .45, if Uncle Sam gave me a good enough price for my AR. That would be good for inventory control. Only one round to keep in stock.
