Anyone else buying off EBay ?

The ebay of today is nothing like the ebay of years ago.

To me Ebay is no different than Gunbroker.

True, and true. Both are full of scammers, but can be a useful source for specific items. I bought a nearly NIB old RCBS Ohaus 5-0-5 scale last year off eBay, and I just bought a part for my Dan Wesson .41 off GB. You REALLY have to do your homework if you are buying something unusual... because if it sounds too good to be true, most likely it is. Shill bidding is the norm on GB in particular.

In the past, I have sold quite a bit of stuff... gun and non-gun related. It got to the point that eBay was taking nearly 25% of the final sale price through fees, shipping, transaction charges and such, and the 'new' eBay is even worse... locking you into their shipping. It was terribly cumbersome to list items for sale... and then you have to deal with the buyers... :fire:

I've bought old gun parts several times off ebay and other items many times with no problems. Armslist is where you don't want to buy from. I was looking for a hard to find gun part a few years ago. I posted photos of the gun on Numrich and other places on the internet including armslist. A guy on armslist said he had the same gun and would sell me the part. I asked him to send me a photo of the gun to show he had the correct part. He sent me the photo. It was My photo that I had posted on Numrich.

Recently I bought a NIB synthetic stock set and a couple magazines for my Rem 7600 project.

All were fair deals and delivered promptly.

It pays to check sources other than Ebay. I was looking for a set of .45 ACP dies by RCBS. A seller on ebay had them for $75.00. I went to the RCBS site and purchased them for $79.00 and free shipping!

I've spent thousands of dollars on hundreds of eBay transactions. I've had 2 occasions where I got scammed and was fully refunded my $. One other occasion where an item was misrepresented (seller couldn't read a caliper). After a brief tutorial on caliper usage and no pissing match, the seller refunded an amount that made us both comfortable and I kept the item.

However, I'm not a fan of the new "required auto pay" system they've implemented. It's to protect sellers from non-paying bidders, which I get. But it's deducted from my bank account a couple of times when I had a gift card balance it should have used first.

I have purchased quite a few gun related items there over the years and also bought some camera lens at great prices. I have bought nothing during last year as I have been dealing with a physical issue that has brought a huge change to my life style. If I can't get out and use something I see no need to have it. I am hoping to be in better shape by warm weather. Then I will considered browsing ebay again.

All the time. Gun parts, scopes and mounts, reading material, camping gear, milsurp, etc.. The whole first page of my purchase history is stuff like that, except for a listing for watch links.

Only time I remember getting burned was on a pair of boots, probably 2yrs ago. They were advertised as size 12, marked size 12 but sized more like an 11. Ebay sided with the seller because I complained they were the wrong size, as if I had ordered the wrong size. Not bad for over 300 transactions.

I just bought a Chinese Type 56 SKS stock off eBay this week, and some 7x57 dies the month before.

And yes, I've been burned a couple of times by eBay sellers, but my average has been quite good. Caveat emptor rules with anything online, but my recollection is that all of my purchases of gun-related stuff through eBay have been kosher.

I pay for all my online transactions with a prepaid debit card. I put a stock set for one of my '03 Springfields in my "watchlist" and had to go load more $$. By the time I got home, the seller had sent me a 10% discount offer....
Winning! 😁😁😁

E-bay is good to buy cheap china made stuff. The buyer protection is strong - most sellers will quickly respond with replacements/refunds if there is an issue.

Gun cases, parts, reloading equipment, etc, no problems.

It’s a huge source also for otherwise unobtainable vintage auto parts.

Rarely, but that's true for anything online.
Most recently, a magazine for a .32 cal Bersa Lubser 844.

I buy and sell on eBay. I've yet to had problems, other than some slight misrepresentation on a few items over the years, but nothing that caused me to want to cancel/get refunded. Just a slight ding on the feedback score and a bit of a comment.

The ebay of today is nothing like the ebay of years ago.

That's good to hear. I've avoided them mostly because I'd heard of others bad experiences. I will give them a look in the future.

The only bad experience I can recall on eBay was buying some silver coins that turned out to be plated fakes. One was likely a contemporary fake so is probably worth more than the real thing. I got refunds for both and have both fakes in my fake coin collection.

Have bought a number of gold coins, including some shipped from eastern Europe that were nice finds.

I bought a spare barrel for my S&W M639 and M659, the radiused cut where the base of the guide rod seats is too small. The seller takes returns, so back it goes.

I buy off eBay, probably loose 1000:1 on what I bid on but when I win, it’s generally a smoking deal.

My best one is probably the $46 Burgmaster turret drill press I “won”.

I buy some motorcycle "take-off" parts every once in a while, and some gun parts when they are a good deal and I can use them. I don't buy a lot of electronic parts or tools as the fake / knock off market is very impressive for some of those items.

Ebay was a good source for spare shotgun barrel and other accessories a few years ago, but I haven't looked since they started cracking down on gun stuff.

Ebay is good if you are a buyer. Not so good if you are a seller. But I'll go so far as to say that for a serious gun collector, ebay is indispensable as a source of hard-to-find parts.

Just last night [!], I found on ebay a set of OEM plastic grips for a Taurus non-decocker PT92. I had been looking everywhere for these specific grips for over a year.

You have to be aware of certain tricks in using ebay. For example, when searching for an item, use common misspellings, to catch listing errors. And also, look for discrepancies between the written descriptions and the pictures. The pictures can tell you a completely different story (assuming that they're pictures of the actual item and not stock photos). Always check the seller's feedback.

Buy and sell stuff on ebay regularly. I have been tricked more than once. Got burned on a 98K barrel I sold. Buyer requested a refund. Then returned a different barrel. They removed the funds from my account to reimburse the buyer without my permission. Couldn't get ebay to make it right.
