to buying bullets? It is turning into "crack" for me. I can't go to a sporting goods or outdoor type store without buying some bullets.

It started out with just comparing prices and taking notes. Now as long as the price is reasonable I buy a box of something.

Found 9mm's on sale at Bass pro today bought some of them as well as some .40 S&W's and .22 wmr's.

My wife thinks I am a nut case.:what:

How many bullets is enough?

You're a social hoarder. You will never have enough.

Try to avoid getting a special credit card just for ammo purchases--that leads to trouble. But, then again...

Don't feel bad, I've started doing the same sort of thing to spread the pain out a bit. Sheesh I've got about 400 rounds of .380 ACP and the ONLY thing I fire it in is my little P-3AT which means that much will last me about a zillion years :D

.357 Magnum... that's another story. Can't get enough of that popcorn!

I do this too

But I'm not an addict... I'm a casual buyer ... you know a box or two every weekend or so...

Addiction would be a little strong... Do I pick up a box or two shen I notice a good price, yep! Can't stand looking at a partially filled ammo box.

it's very addicting to me. I love buying ammo and stacking it away for when I move to GA and can actually go shooting outside without having to buy the range's ammo.
I probably have 1,500 9mm, 1,000 .40, 5,000 .22, and 300 .380. Doesn't make much sense for me to have all that down here since you can't use it in the ranges. Oh well, if it wasn't ammo, it'd be something else less useful

I generally don't buy in stores if I can avoid it, because online prices are that much better (Natchez has a good sale on 9mm and .45 ACP CCI Blazer Brass, and I need to stock up on brass for reloading -- it's cheaper to buy loaded cartridges than virgin brass from Remington).

But yeah, I understand the desire to pick up a little here and there. In the rare events that take me to Wal-Mart, I usually pick up a bulk pack of .22LR (as they're tough to find anywhere else, though now with Dynapoints back on the market, that might change). Sorta like how I pick up an extra can of beans or soup at the grocery store to squirrel away, or buy 2L bottles of Coca-Cola, which I can then refill with reverse osmosis filtered water (hooray for having an RO system) to store in case of an emergency.

Can't help to be prepared. Just be sure that you don't overspend your limits, and be sure you're getting good deals.

I am:D

I can't stop buying. I love when the UPS truck is out front. UPS guy even has my cell # so he doesn't leave ammo out for anyone else.
;)

I am showing this thread to the wifey, maybe she will see it is just not me.

And I will buy more tomorrow. Going out on the delivery route for work and we drive past every freakin outdoor store around Knoxville. Gotta spend lunchtime somewhere.

I am so bad I stop shooting so I will have more ammo left in the cabinet, yikes I AM sick!

My name is Peyton am I am addicted to the bright shiny bullets in LARGE quantities!!! I purchased 1200 rounds 7.62 FAMAE (Chile manufactured) plus 1000 rounds of Wolf 30 carbine. Boy, did my son hate help carrying those case to the garage. I still have not had chance to shoot a single bullet YET!!!

Guilty as charged.
I've bought 7 - 1/2 cases (500 rounds) of ammo in the last 3 months - 9mm,.40S&W,.38spl. I bought 500 rounds of .40S&W Hydroshocks from a forum member last month and I'm buying a full case of 9mm Hydroshocks as soon as he gets it. I'm waiting for them (Dicks) to get more .45acp and then I'll buy 2 - 1/2 cases of it. When I go to the range, I buy ammo from them. I'm saving my cases for when the price is no longer affordable at the range, plus I like to support my range.
I believe that the price of ammo will go even higher when the Dems :barf: :barf: get into office so I'm buying it up now.
I don't think you are a nut case, I think you are investing your money wisely :scrutiny: :D

Enough is a tough question. Enough is when you break a shelf (me) or cave a floor in your house.:uhoh: Or when you have enough to take over a small south American country.

With the exception of a 1000-round case of 7.62x39, I've been living on the "buy as you go" plan. I know I could save some money buying in bulk, but coming up with the cash up-front is so much harder than just going to Walmart once a paycheck. Up until now, I've been spending about $50/month. That was before my wife got her .38 Special. Now I'm going to have to seriously reconsider how I acquire ammo.

I looked into reloading, but I'm not convinced its all that much less expensive. I think the real benefit is that you can shoot better ammo, not that you save a ton of money. I realize that this depends entirey on what you shoot, but when it comes to .380 and .38 Special, the price difference only adds up to a few cents a round. I may give it a try eventually, just to see if I like doing it. In the meantime, I'm scouring the Internet for deals.

Buy it cheap & stack it deep.

Original post - "How many bullets is enough?"

How many cartridges is enough depends on several factors.

A) What is your "basic inventory limit" (BIL)? For most of my firearms the BIL is 500 rounds. With some exceptions for a few guns I bought "just to have one" and seldom shoot, I get antsy when the count falls below the BIL. For some defensive guns the BIL is higher.

B) Is the caliber becoming scarce? Swiss GP11, 6.5x55 Swede and South African .308 NATO seldom shows up at a good price. If you find some at a reasonable price BUY, no matter how many rounds you already have (and let me know where you're buying it).

C) How many firearms do you have in a particular caliber? I adjust my BIL upwards for some calibers because I have several shooters in that caliber.

D) There is no such thing as to much practice ammunition for your defense guns.

I do the same thing, but even better is by remote contol.

Mrs. Plinker: I am taking little Plinkette to Walmart. We will be back in a couple of hours.

Me: Since you are going there, can you pick up one of their value packs of 9mm for me? You know they have the best price around for that stuff, and how much I hate going in there.

Mrs. Plinker: Well, if I don't have to hunt for someone I will.

Me: Thanks, and oh yeah, if you do find someone, see if they have any .40 S&W value packs too. They usually have a good price on them too.

Two hours later...

Mrs Plinker: Here are your bullets (she calls them bullets, but who am I to correct her after a favor like this?). I got both kinds.

Me: Thank you very much, you are a wonderful wife.

Now, if she finds out how many rounds of 9mm I have stashed, I am in trouble! I should probably go shoot them up before she busts me.

Oh yeah, every time I am in Cabela's, I buy one of those Federal blue boxes with 525 rounds of .22 LR. It costs me more in gas to go there than one box, so I don't want to run short. I have over 3000 rounds of that stuff right now!

I go into sweats if I don't buy some gun related thing once a week. Since I need to use ammo anyway, it's how I get my fix.

My ammo addiction is getting too expensive to feed. So now I'm starting a new addiction: bullets, powder and primers. Once she gets a few CC statements, Mrs White will probably force me to sit through another one of her damn interventions. :(

:D I keep between 2000 - 2500 rounds of 12 G X 7 1/2s on hand. (Cabalas needs to get some stronger carts...those green plastic ones are only good for about 3 cases at a time)

At least 100 rounds 12G X 00 buck.
About 40 rounds of 12G 3.5" X 000 buck.
Probably 50 round of various slugs in 12 & 20.
About a hundred rounds of #2 heavyshot.

550 rounds of .40S&W
100 .243
who knows how may bricks of .22LR

I don't call it addicted, but I do start to shake and sweet a little if I got through a weekend without increasing my inventory a little.
