Anyone else have the “itch”

Those triple digit temps that Chuck mentioned are here in NE Kansas and the only "itch" I'm feeling are from the chigger bites. I'll wait till the first frost before I get excited...
I feel your pain!!! Back in the triple digits here too! And I got chewed up by chiggers yesterday mowing…(it had cooled off to 98 when I finished at 20:00)

Just settled on the bullet/powder/charge weight I’m gonna use this season, early apples are ripening and dropping in the orchard, and dad is getting 100+ pics per night on the game cam (showing at least 4 different bucks (which is a lot for our neck of the woods). My elk rifle is printing nicely, as well. I’m itchy.

I went from 260lbs to 360lbs so only very limited ground hunting for me this year. Last year i was about 320 and tried dragging a medium doe in a jet sled through some pricker thicks and across a muddy field. I literally thought i was going to have a heart attack so maybe I’ll take this year off and focus on the gym.

My hunting buddy just got back into beagles and labs so i see a lot of goose and rabbit hunting in my future.

108 yesterday, it's a little difficult to get in the mood. I have not even been to my lease. Buddy that owns the place says he has seen some nice bucks. Gun season opens November 4 so I got plenty of time...

Oh man… a beagle, good thickets, and a double 16… memory lane….

Its hit or miss around here. Everyone is plowing under fence rows and thickets to get one or two more rows of corn in. We run 2 blue tick beagles and i use a 20ga O/U. I like it when they get on a good race but most the spots we have are only an acre or two.

I'm sitting in my living room and can see two GIANT racks sticking up out of the soybeans across the road.
We have trail cam pics of this guy roaming our neighborhood.View attachment 1167140View attachment 1167139
I have been working with my new .45-70, getting sighted in and developing a load for my 340gr cast bullets.

Archery turkey and archery deer seasons run concurrently in Illinois.....that adds to the fun to have both a turkey tag and deer tags in your pocket!
One of my most favorite things is roaming the woods in early October with my faithful Bear 52# recurve, scouting stand sites, looking for deer sign, and getting in the hunting "groove".
I'm interested in details on that rifle?

I made the mistake of going for my usual 3.4 mile walk at high noon yesterday.. Today I'm staying indoors and hitting the bike. I'm not surfacing till SAT when this chit is over.

What I can't understand is how we can have 100% humidity and it not be raining???

More than getting excited about hunting. I'm excited about fall coming
Football and hunting season. Glad we're not having the kind of weather here some of y'all have been experiencing this summer. Folks complained the last few weeks when the temps hit the mid-80s, then complained when we had overcast and a little drizzle. Seeing some larger blacktails in my neighborhood... They look pretty well-fed this year. Of course, they're mostly not much bigger than your average Golden Retriever. They know it's not hunting season, for sure.

Not yet but I know the itch is imminent.
It is over 100f in South Arkansas today with no breeze. About 2000 hours I will ride my 4wheeler to the pond and feed my catfish. I will sweat like a marathoner with that small effort, necessitating a good shower. But, the first time the temp drops to 60f at night my neck will swell, I’ll sniff the air and paw the ground.....that might be late November the way things look right now.

Starting to get the itch for squirrel season, which opens Sept. 1st. Got my CZ-455 all set to go. It's been a cooler than average summer around here so far with rainfall a little above normal. Average high for today is 80 degrees and we only hit 74 today. Been a good year for the ticks and mosquitos, as I've had to remove 4 or 5 ticks from myself so far. The solution for skeeters, ticks, and not yet open hunting seasons is fishing on the big lake, ( Ontario ). Get out a few times every summer with a couple fishing guides that I know. Was out a couple Sundays ago and we did well on King Salmon and Lake Trout. Here's my step-granddaughter with her salmon that she fought with for quite a while. IMG_5308.JPG . Hope this isn't too far off topic but there's nothing open that I hunt yet and at least when you are miles from shore there's no insect hassles. Gotta scratch the hunting & fishing itch any way you can until fall arrives.

I sure wouldn’t call it off topic! I never fished the Great Lakes, though I lived not far at all from Erie, and grew up comparatively not far from superior. But I fished the big Sioux in SD, and a lot of the many lakes as well. Great way to scratch the itch!! I haven’t fished in a few years. The single dad thing is busy! But she’s old enough now, I reckon next year it’s gonna be a thing!

Ah, but there is nothing like fishing Lake Superior or Lake Michigan! The tastiest whitefish ever, coho, chinook, lake trout! And with Lake Huron, in the shallows, big smallmouth bass, big perch -- Lake Ontario, brown trout, muskies, rainbow trout, and Lake St. Clair-- the king of freshwater fish, the Tiger Muskie! White sand beaches (yeah, the black flies in August suck) and refreshing water... the Great Lakes absolutely rule when it comes to freshwater fishing. Summertime in SE Michigan is simply a great time. And so much to look forward to in the next few months...

My dad caught a 14 3/4” yellow perch out of a SoDak lake… proud angler league beauty! And just chopped it up and ate it. Lol. I loved chasing the tigers cousin, the northern pike;those and a good walleye… rivers and glacial lakes (I was on the edge of the “land of 10,000 lakes) were what I cut my teeth on. I’ve always wanted to fish Great Lakes… maybe someday(after I hunt Alaska, and Montana or Colorado, and have an elk and a moose on the wall… {and freezer} goalzzzz…)😁

Scratching the itch this week by working on the ladder stand from post #22 of this thread. The Wildlife Management Area this is located in allows anything except rifles so the plans are for the slug gun & muzzleloader and possibly a crossbow from this one. Put up some of the camo skirting around the outside, got the little "umbrella" thing set up overhead in case of rain and the remaining plans are for some see-through camo mesh hanging down from the umbrella with slots to shoot through. Also placed a trail cam along a nearby deer trail. Mosquitos were out in force, but I brought plenty of repellant. Got reminded that fall is coming when I heard geese going by overhead. Hopefully this thing will be ready for deer season before squirrel even opens on Sep. 1st. IMG_5336.JPG . Should be plenty of time for the local deer to get accustomed to seeing it before there's a deer hunter up there.

My itch has dwindled over the years. Used to be I'd start getting ready in early July for early deer bow season in the middle of September. Now I wait til the ticks are froze off to get serious. I will do a little fall turkey hunting where I can use repellent. Now that my old bird dog is gone, I'm not even looking forward to pheasant season. I still put in time and monies for food plots, and mast/fruit trees. Got a new ladder stand in the driveway to take down to the cabin this weekend. But most of this goes for the boys and the grandkid's success. I rather they get something than me. I tend to just enjoy seeing wild life nowadays than feeling like I need to kill something.

But I'm sure, that first frosty morning in the woods and I hear the grunt of a buck behind me on the hill......all that will change.

I think I have a full blown rash. Grouse and black bear open first of September here, and I can't wait to just get out, do some hiking, and take some grouse with my bow, 1862 Colt, and M95 Nagant revolver. I just got a bear recently, so they will be safe. As they usually are anyhow, being much more woods-wise than I. Very difficult to really get a shot at one. See them often enough, but then they is gone! (by the time I can gauge their size, and make sure there's no cubs)

I think cougar opens in September, I forget, I think I'm ready for another one, if I got a shot at a really nice big one. Where I hunt, the place is crawling with them, but you never see them. The one I got I called in, otherwise, never see them. (but they see me I'm sure)

Might do some calling, just to see what else comes in. One day I called in some wolves. 25 yards away, that was "interesting". :)

When I was out there last year cougars were what kept me up at night. Really the thought of them. They’re so stealthy, it’s quite terrifying really. Bears worried me until one brazenly walked through our camp with us there, at which point I realized there was no reason to assume anything I heard walking around at night was a bear. They’re pretty quiet too. I learned a lot on that trip. I did find a few cougar kill sites, so I know they were there, and if I stumbled into their pantries I’m sure they were watching me. I was so glad to get home.

Yep....same here. My grandpa's 'ol Fox B 16 SxS and me spent many a winter day after a fresh snowfall hunting bunnies. Used to be about the only thing to do in the winter in rural Wisconsin in the 60's.

No body around here hunts rabbits anymore. Very few folks with dedicated rabbit dogs. Rabbits are like coon around here, a forgotten species that needs to be thinned.
