What kind of ballistic can we expect from the snubby LCR in .327 Fed. Mag.? Think they'll come out with a 3 model?

Hoping Ruger will make a LCR3 Model in .327 Federal Magnum. Would make for a great backwoods gun.

Oops! I just thought about that and was going to post to mods, then I noticed your reply.

Yes, please move to appropriate sub-f.

+1 a million times over. With exposed hammer, it would be really tough to beat as a trail gun.

OK, I guess I'll see if I learned anything from 460Kodiak's previous explanation.

If you look at BBTI chrono results from the .327 Federal Magnum out of a 3" barrel it shows:

Federal 85 gr. Hydra-Shok - 1331 fps

American Eagle 100 gr. JSP - 1398 fps

Speer 115 gr. Gold Dot - 1316 fps

However in BBTI testing, the barrel is measured from the end of the barrel back to the breech face. The OAL of the .327 Federal Magnum is 1.47 in, so that means the bullet is actually only traversing approximately 1.52 inches worth of barrel in the BBTI test.

The barrel of the Ruger LCR is 1.875 inches but there is some cylinder gap, I don't know what the cylinder gap on the LCR is, but IMO it probably evens out given that the bullet out of an LCR is going to travel a little more than 1/3 inch more barrel through the LCR. So when someone gets around to testing ballistics out of the .327 LCR - I'm guessing the results will be similar to the BBTI 3" barrel results.

I found this review from 2011 that had some chrono results from the Charter Arms Patriot 2.2" standard version:

http://www.handgunsmag.com/reviews/featured_handguns_charter_arms_327_patriot_021711/

Federal Hydra-Shok JHP 85gr 1,262 fps
Speer Gold Dot HP 100gr 1,203 fps

The Federal Hydra-Shok ran about 70 fps slower out of the 2.2" barreled Patriot than the Contender barrel that BBTI used, and I would expect slightly slower velocity out of the LCR then.

That again makes me wonder if the lack of a B/C gap does in fact make a slight difference on the Contender. I guess it really doesn't matter though as long as the 327 bullet expands out of the LCR barrel. If it does, I think it's plenty effective for self defense.

I guess you have to look at the tests for each gun to know for sure. I do know that faster is not always better. It is interesting to look at the 147gr std pressure HST and the 147gr HST +P - same ammo maker, same cartridge, same bullet, just a little more powder in the +P

The standard pressure 147gr HST penetrates to about 13¼" and expands to about .66" in the 4 denim / gel test.

The same bullet driven to a higher velocity in the +P loading, expands a little more - like out to .69 -.71" but it penetrates less - about 11" in 4 denim/gel test.

Speer 100 grain Gold Dot 327 MAG @1203 fps = 321 ME.

Speer Short Barrel 135 grain 38 Special @ 860 fps = 221 ME.

Such a tiny barrel robs the .327 of it's power.

I think most would a find the same gun with a 3" bbl would be every bit as concealable, but you sacrifice a lot of velocity and power by going with the abbreviated 1 7/8" bbl.

Ruger really needs to bring out a LCRx .327 Fed Mag w/ 3" bbl. That would suit me druthers well fine methinks.
