And probably killed & injured more people with a couple lawn mower gas cans and a BIC lighter.

I opined today will people call for the ban of chemistry kits, or allowing people to practice chemistary outside a school, or background checks for garden supplies...no, because its to stupid to suggest, well hopefully at least.

I'm terrified if antis ever think about reloading or black powder guns, they can kill that using zoning and fire codes and public ignorance even more.

It would have been a very difficult situation from a CCW holder to fight back, considering your average CCW person is limited in training. This was a dark, loud, theater with mass hysteria, tear gas, and an AR15 letting loose. Good luck with that shot.

I agree completely and the unfortunate truth is that sometimes you are just screwed (especially since the murderer was apparently wearing body armor).
But
I can tell you that I'd much rather be armed and hope for that slim opportunity than just be reduced to part of a target rich environment.

Bullet proof vest, throat guard, groin guard, and tactical gloves if I recall the chiefs interview.

Not what happened last night but the shooting years ago with a guy that was armed with a MAK90 and a drum magazine that shot up a military hospital.

Seems to me even wearing body armor it s hurts to get hit with any round. Probably get knocked off balance as well then run away cuz someone was shooting back.

It wasn't many years ago that a man said "Lets Role" and although a tragedy happened a worse one was averted.
Back in those days there was a lot of talk about how things like that would never again happen because we would collectively stop it.
Since then we have had Virginia Tech and this to name just a few and so far no one has done a thing.
Maybe Diggers is right and we all will just cower on the ground when our time comes to die because we are powerless to defend ourselves.
I noticed your signature, and can't help thinking:

In the land of the unarmed the one gun man is king.

There will be much grandstanding, a whole bunch of internet flame wars, and government will trot out some "calls for gun control".

Romney and Obama know gun control is a no-go. Nothing will get through the House of Representatives. There may be some "feel good" votes, but that's about it.

I am more worried about what the state of Colorado will do. They may get silly.

I firmly believe that two or three people banging away at him with handguns would have reduced the toll significantly. Why didn't anyone shoot back?

Bystanders stopped the Loughner in the Gabby Gifford shooting not so very long ago, but the environment was different.

More relevant, perhaps, is the church shooting here in Knoxville when David Adkisson walked into a children's performance at the Unitarian church and opened fire with a 12 gauge. The members thought the sound of the first blast might be part of the play. A friend of mine and other members of the congregation rushed him when he paused to reload and took him down and took the shotgun away.

It is possible that people respond to protect others, but most situations are every man for themselves.

When this came on the news, a guy at work came up to me and asked how to get a carry permit. He's retired military and a gun owner but never carried before. Another sheepdog is born.

No one had guns and the theater was a posted "Gun Free zone".

I'd be shocked if anything even made it out of Committee to even get a symbolic vote in the House or Senate.

If that crazy person even thought any of the teens, 20 somethings, & little kids that would attend a Midnight Batman movie had a gun in a place psoted NO GUNS?

He would have shot up a pre-school day care center at 2:00 PM instead.

Or he could have tried a local biker bar.

But he was too big a spineless coward to do that.

I was in a theater during a big earth quake and we lost power. The natural animal instinct of everyone to get out that door is over whelming. It must have been the most chaotic scene of its unfortunate kind last night. Not even a trained sniper, let alone a responsible ccw holder, could have found a clear shot to take at that guy.

I agree with the folks saying I doubt a single chl holder or a couple of them could have stopped this for sure. The guy would just aim for the muzzle flash most likely, and if your edc doesn't have night sights that head shot is gonna be a fluke, especially if you're aiming center mass like most people would do here. The odds of a stop would be a little better, but nobody can say it would definitely have stopped the threat. Still, this is more proof that no-guns signs do nothing to deter crime.

From the Aurora PD Chief of Police -
•Suspect James Holmes, 24, of Aurora, had one traffic summons for speeding in 2011. Other than that, he had no prior criminal record.
•Within one hour of the shooting early Friday morning, there were approximately 25 officers on the scene who apprehended Holmes.
•There were eventually approximately 200 officers on the scene several hours later.
•Holmes was apprehended with three weapons: one was left inside the crime scene. On his person, Holmes had an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun and a 40-caliber Glock handgun. He had another 40-caliber Glock handgun in his car.
•The police have no capability of estimating the amount of shots fired. There were “many, many shots fired.”
•71 people were shot — 12 are deceased. Two died at area hospitals, 10 died at the scene
•We are not looking for any other suspects, “we are confident that Holmes acted alone.’
•Some rounds penetrated into an adjoining theater — at least one person was struck by a bullet in the adjoining theater
•The suspect was dressed in all black, ballistic attire that included throat, hand and leg covering as well as head and chest protection.
•Anyone with additional information is being encourage to call a tip line at 303-739-1862. For those who feel traumatized, you can call a help line at 303-617-2300.
•The crime scene is large, and includes some cars in the parking lot. The police are working to get those cars released, but “we will be (at the crime scene) for some time.”
•Holmes’ Paris Street apartment is booby-trapped with trip wire, incendiary devices and chemical devises. Five buildings in the area have been evacuated.
•There were four showings of “The Dark Knight Rises” at the theater. All were sold out. Police interviewed close to 200 witnesses.
•Police are analyzing all social media — there are a lot of fake reports. Someone called a national media station and said he was Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates.
•Police were on scene within a minute to a minute and a half of the first call and apprehended Holmes at that point.
•Aurora police often station off-duty officers at the theater. They were not there last night
•“We’re not going to get into why (Holmes) did what he did. We don’t have that information,” Oates said.
•“There is pretty significant evidence he used the assault rifle, shotgun and handgun in the theater,” Oates aid.
Great. Last statement: "...assault rifle..." Sad thing is, tea partyers got flack already, and now this movie will forever be blemished because of a psycho with no point to prove but to hurt innocents. I'm already tired of hearing about it.

Phineas, don't read too much into that. The brady servers aren't that large and a lot of us pro-rights folk "checked in" to see what they were going to say.

Kendhal said:
"Taking a handgun against an AR-15 is crazy..." Not necessarily. Not quite 20 years ago, an air force cop used his 9 mm Beretta to take down another mental case who was using an AK with a drum magazine to kill as many people as he could. The cop fired four times hitting the shooter once in the shoulder, which had no effect, and once in the head, which killied him. The distance between them was 70 yards which would favor the rifle over the pistol.

It's not so much a pistol against a rifle. It's a pistol against the rifle holder's flesh.

I wasn't aware of that. It comes down to this: the theater made a moral choice. People died because those who choose to live the legal armed lifestyle likely stayed away. Posting such signs is an immoral act and this is the consequence.

You know, I see these news reports about shootings, and robberies and stuff, and most of the time, I can't help but think that if I were there, I could have done something.

This time though... full body armor, multiple long guns, and tear gas filling the room, not to mention the flood of people trying to escape? Just being completely honest, in this case I don't think I would have been able to do jack all to change the outcome of this shooting.

People could have not died. Keep in mind some people would focus on getting out and on protecting a family member(s)/friend(s) and tactically if the shooter isn't near you and doesn't see you, why attract attention.

You can't speak with the certainty you currently do.

I agree, its hard for authorities in situations like at to coordinate and return fire. I'd be concerned with also scaring people and having them run in the wrong direction from gunfire.

And the movie was probably still blasting through the speakers. I cant even get to concession stand when everyone remains in their seats. Im shocked that some survivors have the composure so soon to go on TV. It must have been 5 minutes of pure nightmare in there. 70 hits, he must have fired 250 + rounds.

It gets more despicable.

AURORA, Colo. (Associated Press) --
Colorado firefighters are monitoring an apartment building for gases in an effort to determine what chemicals one of its residents might have used to booby trap the place _ in case the materials go off, authorities said Friday.
The resident, James Holmes, 24, is the suspect in a mass shooting early Friday at a movie theater about four miles away.

"It's a pretty extensive booby trap. We're not sure what it's attached to. There are trip wires. There are three containers and we don't know what's inside," said Chris Henderson, deputy Aurora fire chief. If there is a detonation that causes a fire, firefighters will fight it from the outside of the building, he said.

The building and several around it have been evacuated
