I did a search and received no hits on this particular topic; if it's a dupe, sorry.

As shooters, people feel compelled to give us advice quite frequently...especially those who are in sales, as they seem to think we know absolutely nothing about firearms.

Here's an example of mine on one of our favorite topics - what handgun for Brown Bear / Grizzlies. I always carry a .44 Magnum as a backup to a rifle or shotgun. I was prepping for a trip to Southeast Alaska (an area which is bear central) and stopped by the local shop to get some CorBon 305 grain rounds for my S&W 329 PD (my standard setup)..

So the counter guy (who knows for what purpose I'm buying them for) informs me that "...you have the wrong weapon and ammo for a backup gun against Brown Bear. You need to carry a 1911 loaded with Aquila ammo." I forget the weight of the bullet, but is was so light I thought it would float!

So what advice have you received that you instantly knew was just plain awful?

Take care,

My favorite had to be, "You need a 30-06 to shoot a deer round here."

Shot one with a 6.5 mm Arisaka at 50 yds DRT, same day.

Buy a GLOCK
Don't buy a GLOCK
1911 is the finest handgun ever.
1911 is the worst handgun ever
.380 is a worthless SD round
.380 is the finest SD round.

In all seriousness the worst gun advice I ever heard was "carry your auto loader W/ an empty chamber for safety

Rack the slide on the shotgun and it will just majicaly scare the crap outa the bad guy. Hell, why even spend the money on the gun - just get a recording to play ! Kurr - Chunk ----- off goes the bad guy with his pants full !

These are more like bad all around statements, and not so much advice:

"Don't worry; it's not loaded."

"Calm down and don't worry about me sweeping anybody; this revolver has two safeties."

"Just leave your pistol at the line when you go to the bathroom; nobody will steal it." (Of course if somebody steals my gun, they'd take no responsibility.)

I always get a kick out of it when someone throws in a guarantee...."these rounds will stop whatever you're shooting at dead in its tracks - guaranteed!"

I'm guessing whatever those "guaranteed" rounds may be, they most likely are in limited supply and probably very expensive :D

"You don't want that pre-27 .357 ; What you need is a high cap 9mm.

I once heard a guy behind the counter at a gunshow explain to a couple that you could shoot .308 in a .30-06 in the same way you can shoot .38 specials in a .357 Magnum.

wow.

I wonder where that couple is today?...

"All semi-autos are unreliable jam-o-matics. Buy a revolver, because they never fail to fire. Six fer sure!" :barf:

"This here glock would make the perfect bullseye gun for you."

As for the .308 / .30-06 issue, I saw an article from somebody who accidentally ran some through his M1 at a match. Made a funny noise and fire-formed the shell into a straight-wall. I think he got two shots off before one just fell in and failed to fire, at which point he figured out what was going on.

A $2000 pistol will make you a better shooter."

No, really, it will.

if you think something will make you a better shooter, chances are it will.

"If you want to see where the noise is coming from, look into this little hole at the front of the gun."
