Ok guys so I am building myself a bean field gun in 6.5x284 Norma on a savage action and I am excited so I have to ask you if you were building a bean field gun what caliber/action would you use

Very funny scooter no the term bean field rifle I believe originated in South Carolina by a man named Kenny Jarrett who perfected it it is a long barreled rifle designed to take long shots over soybean fields

Mine is a 7mm WSM. With Federal Premium Factory Ammo it shoots like a laser. I am not able to do as well with handloads though:-(

A friend of mine has a tikka damn is it accurate the easiest load devolvement I have ever done p

From the rifles I have ready my 30-06 mauser has been my favorite. I prefer it because of the good fortune I have had with it and it's well done stock. I shoot the 155 Berger VLD in it over H4350.

Never hunted beans. Not much meat. I have shot potatoes, zucchini and egg plant.

Speaking of hunting befit arisen meat....My father has some land out in the middle of nowhere. Every year they share crop some sweet taters. Really, really, really big sweet taters. Modern farming means he gets his quota he already has a contract on and the rest aren't worth the money it costs the share cropper to hire hands to pick them up. We always give away a bunch of them. I suppose they could be sold, but if you're in the green my father and I agree that giving is a good thing. Folks come get a few, I take a few around to older family members and after a few days I let some hunting buddies come get some. After the 1st frost...game on. Those taters aren't any good. But pierce them with small, light, fast moving projectiles and it's quite a show. It makes for a ridiculously fun time with an AR. Those little fellas really explode, lots of fun to hunt :)

I don't have a bean field gun, but my tater guns are 9mm, 45acp, 22 and 223. :)

Oh, I can say tater instead of potato and that's acceptable if you're from the NC Sandhills.

I like your choice. If I were to build a dedicated long range deer rifle tomorrow, I would look really hard at the new .26 Nosler. Not much different than your 6.5x284. I dig 6.5's.

I always think of the 25-06 and .257 WB when I think of bean field rifles. I just settled on a .270 for my future Pronghorn hunting rifle, with stiff 130 gr loads I think it would certainly fall into the same category.

I never heard of a Bean Field gun before today. Would probably go with a Winchester Model 70 in .25-06.

Have to go with my 77 in 243. Blue steel, walnut, and a 4-12 Nikon. Pretty retro compared to today's stuff but I got stung with the introductory ad in 1955 and never looked back. Wish I'd kept my No 1.

We don't have a whole lot of bean fields here in Az but we do have long shots. For my soon to be purchased all around hunting rifle I chose to go with 270. Easy to find, recoil isn't bad and with a good 130 grain load it shoots pretty flat.
