Around here we have peanut fields instead of bean fields.

For my peanut rifle I either use my 7mm rem mag or my 300 WSM. They'll reach out there and touch something. Nothing fancy but they work.

I kinda like to post the virtues of mu Ruger #1's as Beanfield rifles as I have killed some Maryland Bucks that I think would meet the "beanfield" qualifacations ,using ESPECIALLY my Ruger #1 .25-06 Varminter.

25/06 but the next one with be a 257 Weatherby. Like the post above, one of mine is a #1 Variminter in 25/06 but I will put a longer barrel on it with the 257W. My other 26" 700 Sendero 25/06 is near perfect.

What I have - Remington 700PSS in .308.

What I would like - Remington 700 Sendero or the new Remington 700 Long Range with a 26-28 inch barrel in .280 Ackley Improved or .30-06 Ackley Improved.

The original Jarrett Beanfield Rifle was a .280 Ackley Improved and it is still his most popular cartridge for chambering or re-chambering.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Jerrett's bean field rifle was a blue printed model 700action, Jewell trigger, pillar bedded, McMillan stock, Hart Barrel at least 24 inches long chambered in Rem 280AI.

CZ-550 in .243 Win with a 4X12 Nikon scope. Just about the best bullet selection. One rifle with the right bullet will handle anything from p-dogs to mule deer.

I watch some "beanfield" crossings using an ironing board for a "bench rest" and so far my best shot is a "neck shot" on a nice 8 point at a measured 325yards with my Ruger #1 Varminter in .25-'06!

257 WBY Accumark Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15X42 Near Manufacturing Alphahunter. Shoots a 115 gr VLD at about 3300. Scope and mount combination has about 65 MOA of dial up Enough to go past 1000. This rifle and bullet combo drops a 100 pound whitetail like a sack of gravel at 450. Have not had an opportunity to shoot it further.

FWIW I own a 6.5x284 it is pretty awesome but I've never shot a whitetail past 200 with it IMHO there is not much you could do with it you could not do with the 270win in an accurate rifle. The 6.5 140 gr bullets buck wind better if thats an issue.

Good Luck and shoot straight

Bob

publiuss,

Man, that .26 Nosler is going to take some serious powder to fill it up, I have a .264 Mag., those dudes take some hefty powder charges, hungry lil' boogers.

257 Wby, 240 Wby, 270 Wby, 25-06, 26 Nosler, 264 Win Mag, maybe even the 6.5 Rem Mag. Those would be my picks. Might throw the 220 Swift into the conversation if 22 cal was desired.

I guess the bigger question is the size of the bean field.

I've got two that qualify; Savage M110 in .300RUM, the other a Weatherby Vanguard in .257wm. I don't count the .30/06 or .270, ect as they are too "pedestrian" to qualify as "beanfield" rifles, though they will do the job...
Longest shot has been with the Savage and 180gr Hornady SST, took a doe one afternoon at 385yds. I held just under the top of the back and broke the spine. Bang-flop.
They just "surrender" to the .257wm. Longest shot has been 90yds! They just walk in and let me shoot them, for some reason.... I even shot a coyote at ~20yds...
Hence, I no longer sight either at 300yds. I sight in at 200yds to reduce hold-under at 150-250yds. (admittedly, its only +3.5" for either, but thats enough to lose an animal if I'm not careful.)

My .257Roberts has made the #2-5 longest shots, but it's more a "mountain rifle" than a beanfield, as it's only 7lbs w/scope and 5rds of ammo. The .260 and 7mm08 have 20"bbls so they don't qualify either, but both will do the job. The .260 would hold my long-range record if I had found the doe I hit at 460yds (lased before shot), but she ran off after hit and wasn't found till buzzards marked her 4 days later... (129gr Hornady SST).

Of course, Nosler has just come out with the newest/ultimate in .260Nosler, basically, the .375Ruger necked down to .264"....

I believe I'd go with the 6.5 Creedmore. Highly efficient, case design should limit stretching to minimize prep time and barrel life will be greater than the real fast stepping stuff.

Hey Zeke,

Using an ironing board for a benchrest...what a great idea. Folds up, lightweight construction, stable enough for the long shots.

You could put some backpack straps on it, paint it camo, and make it a Tactical Ironing Board :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Actually there also some sandbags in my venture also and a seat of somekind.
Sure beats shooting over the hood of a vehicle.

Beanfield Zapper

Considered the 260AI? I'm fairly certain that will be my next build. Lots of good calibers mentioned here, this is one of them esp if you handload. I have a 7mag and a "reach out 'n waste em" .308 and love both. Studying up for the next one, I really like what the 260AI has to offer.

All though I have Precision F class type rifles, I think my 1961 Model 70 Westerner .264 Win Mag with it's 26" barrel and now Warne rings and a older Leupold 4.5-14x 50 AO Varix 3 "Antelope Rifle" is close to what a beanfield concept is. The sanded stock is full length glass pressure bedded and has a Jewell trigger. The gun struggles to make MOA at 100 yards but at 600 yards shoots all it's 140 grain MatchKings over H870 into less than 6" with some 3 shot 3" clusters. ;)

A friend of mine has a tikka damn is it accurate the easiest load devolvement I have ever done p
Yep, the only thing hard about reloading my Tikka 6.5x55 is finding something that it does not like :) that is the most accurate darn thing I have ever shot. My beanfield rifles are a Savage 270 WSM and a Ruger Mk ll 7mm Rem Mag.

I would have said a 25/06 until I had mine rebarreled to .257 Weatherby Magnum. It shoots the same 115 grain Nosler Partition at 3450 instead of 3080! I don't get as many loads to he pound as I used to, but it is worth it.

I have a Remington 700 in .300WSM that would qualify. I've done all sorts of work to it and it shoots real well. The problem, though, is I have no where to really stretch its legs. It works out to just over 100, and I'd recommend this combo to others looking for such a long range deer rifle, because even though I'm not a 700 fan, the gun is really accurate and doesn't have much felt recoil at all.

Yeah, but those "neck shot" Bucks really don't know the difference in 350 fps or so.
I'm of course a Ruger #1 fan and I own three of 'em , the .25-'06 being my latest acquisition ,(6 years ago) so it's the one I've focused on the most, lately, in playing with reloads and the heavier .25 caliber bullets available.

7MM REM Mag, Remington 700 with Leopold 4-12 scope. It has killed deer at 1/4 mile.
