ok....need a gun to carry in a front pouch or concealed...say something under $1000. prefer a 45, recommendations??..thanks.....

The Taurus 455HS4 from CDNN investments is another option, 5 shot 4" titanium, no ports, fixed sights, $350 or it's stainless counterparts 2" unported for $290. The S&W is great but a bit thicker, however you also get another round.

If you want an auto they can get a little finiky in the smaller sizes but I like the Beretta Couger for over-all size, weight and capability. Ask 1911Tuner about which "little" 1911 will give the least grief.

HK 45C is another option although a bit large for my tastes.

If you don't mind packing a full size I like the CZ 97B. Various 1911s are an option as well here.

Springfield Champion or Kimber Pro Carry II (Commander size 1911)s,

or Glock 30.

In a wheelgun, Taurus 445.

I have many .45's. My favorite by far to carry is my Colt Defender. A great firearm, nice'n lite too. I dont have any .45 revolvers...Sure would like to though! ;)

The Defender will cost ya 'round $600 or so...

Kimber Ultra Carry

I like my Kimber Ultra Carry it's really a nice small package for a 45acp And with a Wilson Mag. And Rem. Golden Saber 230gr Ammo. it works great. :)

Been carrying a Kimber Eclipse Ultra ll for a couple of years.
About as small as you gonna get in a .45.
Shoots as well as any of my full size 1911's.

Check out the Taurus PT145 Millenium Pro http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=145BP&category=Pistol A friend has one and I was very suprised with it. For a double stack, the grip really isn't too wide. Seemed to be quite accurate out to 15yds and it easily ate 230gr FMJ and Rem Golden Saber 230gr JHP's. Not a lot or recoil for the size.

Taurus had gotten a bad rap a couple of years back but this model is very nice and my friend has about 2K rounds thru it and not one problem. Fits fine in a fanny pack or small holster.

There is also a single stack version the PT745 http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=745B&category=Pistol

I use a Defender for front pocket carry. If you change out the recoil guide rod/spring system every 500 rounds, you will likely never have a malfunction with this system. That is the advice given to me by the designer and it has been 100% accurate thus far.

glock 30 far has been far and beyond the competition for me if you can get past the fact it feels a bit brick-like. it helps to have a thick muscular stature, smaller statured people may have difficulties... there is always the glock subcompacts in different calibers..

HK USP45 Compact. Reliable and accurate. USP's are NOT big fat pistols like everyone says, they only look like they are. Actual measurements would show how ignorant that statement is.

A small 1911 would be thinner, but you do want a pistol that actually works right? :neener:

The G30 is my favorite. Yes, it does feel brick like but it just takes a little getting used to. I'm 5'6", 130 pounds and I don't have any problems with my G30. I love that gun! :) It's accuracy out of the box is amazing for a $530 pistol. Dollar for dollar, it would be hard to beat the G30.

Glock

Have you tried a glock yet? That is all I shoot now, after owning a 1911 and p99. Very few parts and great warranty. But with glock, you are going to love them or hate them. I would say a glock 30, small 10+1 of .45. Or look into the .45 gap. The g37 is thinner than the g30 but longer.

Both weight and bulk are important elements for me. Here is a site that has some specs that might be helpful.

I find that my SA LW Compact is about as heavy as I want to carry all day. Others do not find a full size steel too heavy, but if it too heavy to carry all the time, then it is of little use at home.

The Colt Defender seems to have a good reputation on the forums, but I have not seen or used one.

yes edmond, accuracy out of the box for the g30 is incredible. shoots better than my springfield GI and has never had a malfunction unlike the latter. I am almost afraid to put night sights on it worrying it may spoil its incredible accuracy.

I think it depends on the cartridge though sometimes...I like the blunt blowback of a nice .45... where as 9mm or .357 sig and the like feel very snappy and really mess with my followup accuracy... at least in the glock models.

remtlm,

Don't just limit yourself to the .45acp cartridge. The 9mm is a very good cartridge that has proven itself time and time again. Another advantage it has is that it is relatively cheap to shoot compared to the .45acp, assuming that you're not reloading. If you're reloaded, the .45acp becomes much cheaper and it's not worth the saving to reload 9mm.

The .40s&w is a nice cartridge as well. The thing about Glock models 26 (9mm), 27 (.40s&w) and 33 (.357sig) are that they all have the same outer dimensions and the holsters and accessories will work for them all. I had a 26 and it is a very concealable weapon that will also give you 10+1.

G30. too thick? G36. Biased against plastic? Sig 245. 1911 fan? Take your pick.

SA, V-10,Ultra Compact,Bi-Tone :)
Works for me..

I prefer my Colt Lightweight Commander, but them I'm an old fart that likes old guns. In addition to the ones mentioned above, you may also want to consider these:

1. The new thinner Rugers look promising.
2. If you're willing to back down to a .40 or a 9mm, check out a Kahr.
3. You can't beat a Sig 220 or the smaller one, what is it, 245? Anyway, it is the chopped 220.(oops, I see victory already covered this)

the sig 245 looks nice....question about some of the guns...the ones with the "beaver tail" or whatever it is called..is this not a drawback on a concealed arm..as it may get caught easier??...thanks for the help so far......also....good place to get fair pricing on guns??.......

I agree that Edmond makes a good comment in regard to the 9mm. I recall some information by a coronor or a Dr in ER, that he could not tell the difference in the wounds from a 9mm, 40, or .45.
In examining the results of tests by Ammolab, I concluded that with the best ammunitin there is not a nickels worth of difference in those three.

Now if I knew I was about to have to shoot someone, I would rather have a .45. However, I carry my Kahr P9 or my G26 a lot more often than one of my .45s.

Here is a thread that discusses that issue. David DeFabio, Ammolab, is to my mind one of the leading experts on this subject.

See what you think.
