How about a Colt CCO? My former Lt. turned me onto this one and I haven't looked back.

Lots of good advice here, rent or borrow some of those suggested and light 'em off ! Best of luck. Lt. G

The Springfield Lightweight Compact that I had was far and away the best carry .45 I've had or can think of. Had to sell it, but I didn't want to.

DITTO Shmackey's response.At least a good Friend got mine.tom.

I am the most accurate with the 4" Kimber but the other 2 conceal a little better.

I've had great luck carrying the Glock 36 in the summer via an IWB holster during normal activites and while jogging, etc. Did the same with my Sig P245 and while it worked well, I tend to sweat quite a bit in warmer weather and the Sig did require daily rust removal. Either one would serve well.

ShootCraps, Great minds think alike?
Got mine on clearance at Gander Mtn. for $599.
It hasn't had indjestion with any ammo I've fed it,groups ok,
and feels so good in my hand

Star PD 45 - if you can get one

Some fine pieces discussed above.

You might want to take a look at the Star PD 45. Discontinued, but much loved by those who had the pleasure of using or owning one.

Read this letter by someone who's had to carry a 45 for a living.

My CCW choice

My carry piece is the Para Ordnance p12-45. All black steel frame with white three dot sights that holds 10 rounds of Black Talons...enuff to persuade anyone to back off...

"I prefer my Colt Lightweight Commander, but them I'm an old fart that likes old guns."

Wayne,

Am an Old Fart too but, who wouldn't want to own a real LW Commander period!

Daily CCW is a Glock 36 with good nite sights {in my case Wilson's old model} in either an Alessi Talon+ or his W6DT IWB's.

If back problems & arthritis wern't issues would be using a G21 or Wilson KZ.

Another vote for a Glock 30. I have owned several 1911's over the years and still own a couple but none compare to the out of the box accuracy and reliability of the Glock 30. I have to say, next to my HK P7 my G30 is my second most accurate handgun.

I haven't had a chance to try the Glock 36 but given the size is not that much smaller I would rather take the 10 rounds of the G30. IMHO, I wouldn't even consider one of the .45GAP guns. Ammo will be expensive and will be more difficult to purchase than standard ammo. You won't be able to stop off at Walmart on the way to the range to pick up a cheap practice ammo. Stay .45 ACP and you won't be discouraged.

Can other manufacturers make pistols for that round or is it just a Glock thing right now?

I would imagine that if that round grew more popular, it would become cheaper.

In list of order of carry preference:

Para Ordnance Carry 12, LDA(Light Double Action), 12+1, Stainless, bobbed grip safety
Springfield Armory Champion, SA, 8+1, Parkerized
SIGARMS P220ST, DA/SA, 8+1, Stainless

Listing preferences are due to size and ease of carry.

Yes, they can. I've heard rumors of more GAP pistols being devlopped by Beretta, Steyr and CZ. The CZ rumor mill says to expect a RAMI in .45 GAP and if it sells well other models might follow suit.

S&W CS45 23 oz of .45 power and reliability. Conceals really well in a Smartcarry or in a Tucker Texas Heritage tuckable (second pic)

Here's a pic to compare size to a 2.5 in K frame Smith and a J Frame Smith:
