Hi, I am thinking now I like to get an AK to finalize my pre-inauguration stock up and I am wondering what is the best AK you can find for under $800 that can be considered good. Many have told me Russians are best, Chinese are second, Bulgarians third, Romanians fourth. However, I don't know what to make of these statements, and I am sure everyone has their own opinion.

I was considering a Saiga .308 carbine, but I like the availablity of mags and lower price of ammo of the AKs. Plus, I suppose the AKs are more reliable although less accurate than the Saigas. The Saiga .308 is ideal I think for low price and effective commie rifle, but I think the 22 in barrel is bit bulky for a dual purpose medium, close range gun. From my undersatnding, it seems more like a long range gun. Again I am not very knowledgable, but going by word of mouth and what others told me.

What would people's suggestions be for choosing a good AK/Saiga style gun? I have seen a few WASRs under $700. Sad, before the election I saw one for sale for $350, now price has doubled.

Yes, I know I will hear some people say, oh just wait and prices will go down. With Barack Hussein and the ultra left-wing gun grabber crew coming to power, I just cannot let anyone else say this to me. Yeah, best scenario, i will be put on a waiting list for 2 years, so I can get my newly imported AK for a reasonable price; as if ithat will ever happen.

The reason I want an AK is for reliability and ease of carrying. I have two DPMS ARs, but I know ARs are notorious for jamming.

I am right now thinking of purachsing one of the following:
1. Romanian Ak47 WASR
2. Romanian AK47 Poly
3. Bulgarian AK47
4. Saiga .308
5. Saiga 7.62 x 39 (???) not sure about the advantage of this, more accurate than AK?
6. Polish AK47 (Heard some mix reviews of this one)

I am interested to hear what people think of this. Thanks.

I would suggest the WASR-10 Poly, or an STG2000. The WASR-10 poly basically is the same as any other WASR-10 but with synthetic furniture. Trust me, you want that on the gun, less warping potential. Make sure to get either an underfolding stock, or the full non-folder.

Or, if you can find one, the StG. Basically, that is an AK with a plastic furniture, but with an AR-15 style flash suppressor.

On either of these, you are gonna be at the limit of what you are talking about in price. From where I am sitting, it'll be worth every penny even if the prices go down, and everything is okay. (Which I doubt will be the case for a long time)

Most WASR's I see have wood furniture. How hard and expensive is it to have the wood replaced with poly material?

BTW>. The Bulgarians I see mostly contain Poly material. What makes you choose the WASR over the Bulgarian AK?

U can get a Tapco SAW grip and buttstock for around a $100. But, I'd try to find one with the poly already.

And, as for Bulgarian, around here they've been pretty expensive. You find one within your budget parameters. don't play. Get it. It's a better quality.

If you had a choice between Saiga .308 and Bulgarian AK, which would you go for? I am considering the Bulgarian, but from what I am reading the Saiga is more accurate. As far as the Yugos, they are all way over price, I cannot even find one under $1000.

So, I am deciding between Saiga .308 or Saiga 7.62x39 or Bulgarian AK. Which one of these three would you pick? I own a DPMS LR-308, so having same caliber with the Saiga, coudl be an advantage; then again, it also could not be.

I love my Saiga, myself. But it really depends what you'll be using it for.

The .308 is a great gun, but you're unlikely to find many magazines for it, aside from the expensive Saiga-specific ones. And .308 is more expensive than x39.

The other two in 7.62x39 will be less powerful, but the ammo will be cheaper and parts more readily available.

So: for hunting or long-range target shooting--which isn't common with an AK--or if you just want a rifle with extra thump, I'd grab the .308. For range use, plinking, and a SD or coyote gun, the x39.

Saigas are the best AK-pattern weapon out IMHO, but you'll have to spend more to convert them if you want the 'AK look'. On the plus side, they will be cheaper than buying Bulgarian at the base price, and you'll get exactly what you want out of them since you have to add the parts.

if you have a dunhams near you, pick up a WASR from them. the double stack is ~500 and the single stack is ~400 some people don't like buying from big retailers (if you can call them that.) they have deals every so often, the day after thanksgiving, i saw single stacks for 279.99
they usually are in decent shape, but you would have to check that out for yourself

just my 02/100

None. The market sucks right now. I would wait until after Obama gets into office and the hype dies down a little bit. AKs are massively overpriced right now. The price can't go much higher, but it can drop. So worst case scenario, you wait a month or two and you still have to pay too much. Best case, you wait a month or two and save a couple hundred bucks.

If you must get an AK, get a Saiga. They're the best AKs on the market and the cheapest. It takes a little work to get them to the correct configuration, but they're worth it.

Keep in mind that I already have my AK, so I'm not in any fear of not being able to buy one. That doesn't make me the best person to be taking advice from, but I am handing it out for free, so.... sample?

I couldnt agree more with this statement! With the daunting problems that our country and ecomomy face...a new assult weapon ban is #1,000,000 on his to-do list!

Ohh ya, buy the saiga!!!

Saiga is an AK; they're made by Izhmash, the same Russian manufacturer that turns out the military versions. They're just dressed up in civilian clothes to get by import restrictions. To learn all you need to and then some, go here:

The favorite mods are trigger groups and stocks, which you can do yourself, but there's nothing wrong with them right out of the box. I have an unmodified .223, and the only complaint I have with it is the 10-round magazine that came with it; it's very hard to insert. I bought two 20-round Surefire mags for it, and they work great with no mods to the rifle.

I got a Polish AK from Ohio Rapid Fire for a hair under $800. Good folks. Give them a call. They have differant ones.

Try to find a saiga sgl10 i bought mine for 650. All it needs is the pistol grip conversion and youll have a sweet rifle for bout 800. I also got a bulgarian aks74 for 600 last week so theres deals out there.

the yugos are omho the best stock ak's around. I love em. I have a mak-90 and it is nice with a good trigger, reliable, and shoots accurate enough for it's purposes.

However if i had $800 for an ak i would get a wasr, which i have found new for $00 or so, you need to shop around, and even buy used if you need too. then once you get the rifle, send it to Rifle Dynamics and let the yoda of ak's Jim Fuller go through it, he has a package deal that he does on the wasr's that cost $350 it is well worth it and you won't even recognize it after it returns. it gets refinished and everything. Look him up give him a call and he will square you away. He is a good man, i have met him and have seen his work first hand.
