best hillbilly gun

First 36 years of my life were spent in WV...still travel there every day for my job.

I'm going to go with a Remington 597.:D

I'll be headed to Cass in a few weeks, I've been thinking I'll probably take my Sub2000 with me in case we happen by a range.

I say single shot, no name brand, traded for a goat or a piston for an airboat.

gym,

You've been watching too much "reality" TV. An airboat is as worthless as your pet hog's teats in the mountains of WV.

How 'bout a well seasoned cast iron skillet or a wringer washer to set on your porch that still works instead of anything cajun?

+1 for Day's Work (plug of course, loose Beechnut is for sissies).

P.S. Ala Dan, I knew an 11 year old boy that could put your eye out with that slingshot if he thought you were funnin' at his expense.

Surgical rubber tubing is another of those baffling things that makes it's way into Appalachia's hinterlands for slingshots, and because of this beware of 11 year old boys!

You want to REALLY have something for trade take you a stone sharpening wheel with a foot treadle that has some miles on it, getcha a single shot, plug of days work AND some likker (maybe a shoat too).

Purpose would be a definite consideration, but also ammo availability. I'd figure 12ga is pretty common, followed by 20, etc. So, if I'm picking just one gun to spend the rest of my life in the hills with... maybe my single shot 12ga.

But in reality, I'd bring 'em all.

Today's answer--my mind changes so often, you could ask this question once a week and i'd have a different answer every time--is a thompson encore with barrels for .22lr, .223, 30/30, and a 20g for it as well. Maybe a black powder barrel as well?

Pictoral evidence supports the lever actions, but the SKS is A LOT cheaper now. Ala Dan, you better run! In this pic the 11 yr old seems to be sporting an Iver Johnson!

Cmdr Slander,

Study your history, starting with the "Whiskey Rebellion". Washinton chased the illicit whiskey makers from Pennsylvania into the Appalachian hills (and unwittingly created Bourbon through the Scots style distillers using the limestone water and corn).

Moonshiners ARE hillbillies, just a fractional percentage of them. Who do you think were drinking it?

I'd say think of the 'shiners as the aristocracy of the hillbillies (or the incarcerated).

I wasn't trying to start anything... I realize the moonshiners are a subgroup within the larger hillfolk culture. I was referring more to the 'modern' moonshiners (with AKs and ARs) vs. the, shall we say, stereotypical Hillbilly clan.

West Virginia. Hatfield Clan family portrait, 1897.

The fellow seated second from the left between the two women was "devil" Anse Hatfield himself.

Been to his grave site a couple of time visiting my further eastern relatives. We used to go to the cemetary he is buried in at night because it was said the man was soooo mean his ghost would come back (for whatever reason) and do whatever ghosts do. :uhoh:

Scary fun as a kid i guess. Later in high school we'd visit taking girls out there trying to scare them with the tales of ol' devil anse and get some cuddling.

Good times. :D

My personal favorite is my old topper model 158 with the 30 inch barrel. It is my favorite single shot. squirrels turkey and other critters have all been taken with that one. :D

I've lived in the North Georgia mountains my whole life, been hunting here for close to 50 years. I've seen exactly 1 person in the woods hunting with a lever action 30-30 in all that time. About 30 years ago you used to see a few Remington 742's, but scoped bolt action rifles have ruled here for as long as I can remember as hunting rifles.

You will see quite a few SKS and AR rifles as well as Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 shotguns. About a tie between Marlin 60 and Ruger 10-22 rimfires.
