Mr. Varminterror says it just about the way it is these days. I say this as one who is a long time sufferer of pretty wood addiction. An affliction so acute that more than a few guns in my collection were bought only because I fell in love with the wood. Finding exceptional wood is sometimes simply a matter of being at the the right place at the right time: like when the dealer unwraps something new. Or there is the option of specifying high grade wood when ordering a particular model. The Remington custom shop will send you blanks on approval. Or you can go shopping for pretty wood to have custom fitted and sculpted by a custom gunmaker. Here are samples of all three: including Ruger rifles that happened to have beautiful stocks, a couple Remington custom shop rifles for which I selected the wood in advance, and a couple rifles for which I bought wood for later custom projects by independent craftsmen. .$1500 might not even buy a “fancy grade” blank and duplication, let alone the metalworks to bed down into it.
