In your opinion, what is the best commonly available rifle cartridge that is readily adaptable to a suppressor? My opinion is that the .45-70 is one of the best commonly available cartridges, it has very heavy bullets available up to 540 grains I've seen. That weight of a bullet going around 1000 feet per second would be quite impressive. Do you think that the 12.7x54 cartridge should be commercially available?

Not viable, going to suppress your Sharps?

There are plenty of calibers that work well in suppressors with out dredging up obscure and or obsolete rounds. .223, .308, 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blackout all make the short list. And none of them require a suppressed Trapdoor.

55 to 200gr bullets when kept subsonic do not offer the same flexibility as 500+gr subsonic.
Personally I might go with a 450 Bushmaster or 458 Socom over the 45-70, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a viable option. For one thing you actually can shoot it out of guns other than single shot antiques.

I thought .450 Bushmaster was .452 caliber, not .458 caliber. I think that the .45-70's straighter case compared to the .458 Socom would make it more suitable for the 500+ grainers, but then again, .458 is capable of using 600 grainers, though the .458 socom isn't all that readily available.

Big bores do suppress well, I have shot a .510 Whisper and it was both very quiet as well as being very accurate. Only problem I could foresee with a suppressed 45/70 is that huge case. For the best accuracy you want to utilize as much of the case capacity as possible. I have been loading my 450 Alaskan with a case full of Trail Boss and a 500 grain cast and it is probably going out around 1100. Be easy to get sub sonic with it I do believe. Trail Boss is a great powder for developing suppressed, I have been using it in my Ruger in .308 with 220gr Matchkings with very impressive results...

One of the converted Enfields or even a lever gun would be fun suppressed.

I do like the .300 Whisper, it has the same overall length and rim as the .223, same energy as .45 when subsonic, plus its a good ole' "thurty".

With 45/70 you're going to need a can as big as a 338 Lapua silencer, if not bigger.

Common? 5.56x45 or .308.

A subsonic 308 is VERY quiet when fired through a can.

Ever since they came out, I've had this idea of getting a .45LCRossi Ranch Hand, and sticking on a full stock, and a can up front.
I'd bet that a 300gr .45 caliber bullet at 1000fps is still gonna hurt big time, you get a 6 shot mag (perhaps 5 if you have to mod it to allow for the can), it would still be a small package even with the addition of the suppressor, and it uses a manually cycled mechanism so no requirements on pressure to operate the action.

I see it as an epic win.

That's pretty easy, the 223 and 308 are by a huge margin. There are many rifles equipped chambered in those cartridges that have the muzzle already threaded and are suppressor ready.

It would also depend it's intended purpose. Is it for quiet target shooting or maybe hunting? Most states dont allow the use of a suppressor for hunting game animals though here in Texas we use them for feral hog erradication.

There are plenty of modern rifles chambered in 45-70. I suppressed Marling guide gun would be pretty freakin neat!

A single shot would be neat too.

I have an H&R Buffalo Classic that I load 13grs of Trailboss under a 350gr cast bullet. Its amazing. Super soft shooting and easily as quite as a suppressed 308.

:p You haven't heard my .308...

I have a supressed 458 SOCOM I built for hog hunting. I wanted a semiauto quite 45-70. The 458 uses magnum pistol powders that are quite a bit faster than those used in the 45-70 and that helps keep things quite but you loose some of the potental of the 45-70 because of the small case volume.

I built my suppressor on a form 1, its pretty big but is quite. Sounds better than my AAC cans for .223 and 308. I made it so it comes back over the barrel so I could add volume without making it as long as a pool cue or having to spent another $200 for an SBR stamp.

I'm a fan of the .50 Hush Puppy. 510 grains moving out at 1050 fps makes for a pretty loud thump when it hits the target...not to mention that it'll shoot through a hog.

I don't really see much in suppressed .357, you could get the same results with 158 grainers in a 9mm.

I wasn't saying the 38 lever gun was the ideal gun to suppress, just showing a suppressed lever gun in light of some of the previous posts.

Yes, it's one I built. The angle of the photo above makes it look bigger than it is but it's not small for sure. It's 2" OD thin wall 4130 for the main tube, the endcaps are just regular steel as well as the threaded part that allows gas to enter the chamber over the barrel. The tube that goes over the barrel is .035 4130 and the K's are 7075.
