I had good luck with a Ruger 22/45 MKII. I also had a cenier 1911 conversion platinum conversion that was amazing in reliability and accuracy.

I have a single six currently.

I have a Victory and love it. I cannot speak on the Ruger MkIV. A Sportsman's Warehouse near me has a 7” barrel flat sided Buckmark that I’d love to try but I just can’t justify it. I feel it’s a beautiful pistol though.

With the right ammo it likes the Victory is very accurate and as close to 100% reliable as a 22 rimfire will get. I’m currently using some Club grade target ammo that has a quoted velocity of 1065 and a heavy coat of wax that smears in the mag, so it’s not a great option for reliability. I ran a 500 round box of Winchester M22 through it with only one malfunction. That round was a dud and didn’t fire on even the third strike.

The first is my 25 yard sight in target from a rest and the second is with the M22 at 10 yards off hand.

I have a Ruger MKII and MKIII. Very accurate and fun to shoot. I have never shot the Buckmark or Victory.

Buckmark has the advantage that the barrel can be changed out for a threaded, light weight, or longer one easily.

Ruger are a long time classic and also a great pistol.

Nothing really against the S&W (have a 41 but not a Victory from them) but it would be my last choice I think due to the support difference on the other 2 if nothing else.

I'm going to move this over to the Handguns: General Discussions forum.

As for me, I like the Ruger Mark IV, but I have no appreciable experience with the other 'usual suspects' (Buckmark, Victory, Model 41).

I have two Ruger Marks, and my FiL has one. They are all excellent.

I have a Buck Mark and my friend has another. They are both excellent.

My friend in another state loves her S&W Victory, though I've never shot it.

It sounds like a win/win/win kind of decision.

Whichever fits your hand best and "points" the best is the best choice.

Or whichever one you find used for a great price.

I love my Buckmark. I really don’t know why I waited so long to get a .22 plinker, but I’m glad now! Here’s why I went with Buckmark over Ruger...

A Buckmark thumb safety is much more usable than some of the Ruger offerings.

It was just a little cheaper than the Ruger .22/45 at the time I purchased it.

that’s it. They are all good, reliable, accurate, and fairly durable guns. There is some aftermarket support for all of them, but really nothing is needed, even to be competitive for Steel Challenge.

For general plinking any of the above, with an addition, a Berreta Neos, for the money a very reliable plinking auto and very easy to set up with reflex or red dot sights
But for serious target work. The Smith and Wesson model 41.
With the exception of the Buck Mark I own most of those mentioned plus A High Standard Military HD.

All three are excellent candidates. It will come down to which one has the best fit and "feel" for him .

I have owned the Buckmark shoot the S&W a good bit, and own a Ruger MkII. You can't go wrong with either I kept the Ruger because I live the Volquartsen upgrades I did to the trigger and hammer.

With that said, I have not taken it out in a while. The Taurus TX22 had proven to be nearly as accurate and the Ruger eats crappy ammo better. I just enjoy shooting it a lot more. I have to leave the cheap Federal bulk at home though.

Grip angle is one obvious distinction between them, with Ruger offering 2 versions (Lugeresque and 1911).

My BuckMark was very accurate with a nice trigger as delivered, even more so now with a Tandemkross trigger & Gearbox. Quirks: feeding due to a sharp chamber entry which can be rounded slightly.

I’m hunting high and low for a Mark IV at present with little success finding one I want. I do have an upper, just waiting.

My Neos is on par with the Browning for accuracy but with a terribly heavy stock trigger and no aftermarket support. Too bad really, it has great potential.

I think any would be a solid choice but I think the Ruger checks more boxes for more people than the others, with reliability being a hallmark. With respect to those who love the previous generations, I would bypass all for the IV, especially for a first timer.

All 3 are similar enough that your buddy should hold each before making a decision. I have a Mark I and Buckmark, I have a slight preference for the Buckmark because I prefer the grip angle. I've never cared for the Ruger 22/45 because while the grip angle is correct, the polymer lower feels SOOOO cheap to me. Which they made it with an aluminum or steel lower.

+1 on seeing the guns in person and holding them.

I haven't held a Victory, but I've spent much time firing a Ruger 22/45 MKIII and a Buckmark Camper. The poly grip framed Ruger with the molded in "grip panels" feels smaller in the hand than a standard Buckmark grip. Perhaps a 22/45 with replaceable grip panels is more handfilling, but I don't know.
