This should be interesting.... I just received the following in an email from CalGuns Foundation. The law firms of Gura and Kilmer are taking the case of 3 California residents who were denied CCW because they did not have a "valid" reason. If this case is successful, it should open the door for CCW in California for self-defense reasons.

Today, The Calguns Foundation and SAF filed a motion for summary judgment in Sykes et. al. v. McGinness et. al. We've asked for a hearing Thursday, September 24, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, in Courtroom 7 of the United State District Court for the Eastern California, 501 I Street, Sacramento, California 95814.

Best of luck to them-- although it will probably not change the status quo, maybe it will raise some awareness how screwed up gun laws in CA are and gun laws in general are.
