Different strokes. I really like shooting the M1. That's one factor - I just plain enjoy the rifle, and shoot it well. It is still a great rifle, and a phenomenal rifle during its prime era.

Another factor is the history. I'll use that word instead of "nostalgia".

Another factor is personal (or personal history). The M1 was rifle that my uncles carried in two different wars (WW2 and Korea), and the rifle my father carried when he was in the service.

And maybe collectability, for those who are looking for the "right" piece.

If you discount the history and personal connections, then yeah it's "just nostalgia". And if you don't actually enjoy the rifle, then yeah, I can see it being "meh."

I guess I just don't get what the fuss is all about.

My future SIL bought one through the CMP program. I shot it. My thought was... Meh. I'd rather shoot my Winchester 94.

Other than pure nostalgia, what exactly am I missing?

Every Garand is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

One allure to many people is the rifles history of manufacture. Four different companies with many parts that had minor design changes along the way. People such as Scott Duff have documented those design changes with dates that can be traced by the drawing numbers on the part. When each rifle went through armorer inspections and rebuilds, parts were swapped randomly. I've only 4 Garands, but tore each apart as soon as I got it to check the parts such as trigger group, op rod, gas plug, look for stock cartouches, and other stuff.

I don't consider myself an expert on this and don't own anything correct. But as an example I got a HRA field grade last year, and it has an early Winchester trigger housing. I thought that that was pretty cool.

I need a tractor gun (International Harvester).

An M1 Garand was the first rifle I was ever issued a weapons card for by my government. The card got dropped into the rifle's slot in a rack when I checked it out for training. The card had a typed serial number matching the rifle and a big grease penciled rack number for my rifle's assigned slot in the racks.

I have always thought of the M1 as a fine rifle and a darned good bayonet handle!

My CMP rifle is no where near as nice as that one but I am glad to have it.

I just bought a real tractor, a Kubota B2601, so I need to save up a little first.
I'll be up at the North Store this summer and might try and hand pick one. Assuming the daggone hoarders don't get there first :cuss:

My hobby horse farm runs on Kubotas, three tractors and a utility vehicle. My MX5100 does the yeoman load lifting, moving pallets of hay and lifting anything else with the pallet forks. Good equipment!

Unlike recent previous IHC offerings, these are posted on CMP's web site sales area so I suspect they will have sufficient inventory to last a while. Good luck.

An IHC Garand was the last manufacturer I obtained to fill out my collection.

P.S., I like orange not because I live in Big Orange (University of TN) country but because I like McLaren race cars from the CanAm days.

A bit of advice, make sure if you send in the paperwork, you track the letter. I unfortunately did not. They ask for a lot of info and payment as they are the FFL. So far 2 weeks and I do not know if they received it, other than my card has not been compromised.
I get that they are busy, but an email to say we have your paperwork/processing order is not out of line. Called and emailed, no response from "customer service."

They don't charge your card until it is shipped. The CMP Forum has a thread where others post their progress with mail orders:

Kind of iffy but you can get a clue. My last mail order was much slower than what they are doing now. I think I was able to call them and get a response on the progress close to the shipping date.

Do I need to send in the paper work, such as club membership or anything else, before visiting the store to purchase anything?
How is the selection at the North Store? I'm Ohio. With so many Garands coming in, probably they are out of room to display!

Quite frankly, I am surprised that subject of this Thread is, apparently, news to so many people here.

When I first saw the @SUBJ my first thought was, "Well, DUH!" ... but then folks kept responding like this was news to them ... :what:

... so, Good Thread, Garandimal. :)

Thanks for the info, been following the forum so I can get an idea, seems they hit the proverbial wall just as I sent mine in. Hit or miss on the DBU; just wish they would make it a must to send an email " hey we got your order, so sit back and relax we're working on it". But then again, that's my fault for not tracking it.

UPDATE: Customer service got back to me, did not answer question about my paperwork, but did state they were working on orders received on 02/20. Mine should be in the 24th thru 26th stack then, hopefully if not next week then the week after I will have my answer.

And understand that the minimum spec? Is just that.
Service Grade - at least a few years ago, generally meant a ME < 1, and a TE < 2.
Like fresh from the armory.

Thats what I ordered, Service Grade. Sorta curious how well the ones from the Phillipines and Turkey were actually cared for though.

If it works like the South store, bring your documents and filled out forms to the store and you can buy. You will need to pay sales tax.

Don't expect a large stock. If you look in the CMP forums there is a North Store section that will have some reports of what was in the store when people showed up. It will give you an idea of what to expect. Priority goes to mail order. The stores do tend to have more unique stock if you get lucky. They had 03A3s in January. Not enough of them to mail order. I missed them by a week.

They were probably packed in cosmoline and warehoused.

Pulled a few for guard duty and the qualification rack.

They averaged, back when, ~ 3/1 Outstanding/Very nice.

You will need to pay sales tax.

If you live in OH or AL, your are stuck paying sales tax regardless.

If you go to one of the stores and take the rifle with you, you will pay the sales tax.

If you go to one of the stores and have the rifle shipped home, you will not pay OH or AL sales tax as long as the rifle is shipped to a state other than AL or OH.

So, it depends on how anxious you are to get your rifle. I've made a few visits to the South store and have carried the rifles home with me on some visits and had some sent home on other visits.

This^^^^

Shopping in person means you get to pick through the racks, so you can feel more involved. CMP will take "requests" like serial number ranges, makers, stock wood, etc., and tries to honor those as best they can.

Honestly, the real reason to go in person to one of the stores is for ammo. The shipping rates on ammo are fair, but the weights are a killer--potentially more than gas to drive there and back.

I'm glad Obama lost this battle, but I looked at the bids on these guns. Forget it. Three grand for a hodgepodge of non-original parts that wreck them as historical artefacts. I can't even guess what an all- original Garand used only by US forces would cost. Ten grand?

I missed this boat as well as the M1 carbine boat.
