"Have you got your CMP Garand yet?

I figured I would pass on a great experience I have had lately. I had to go to Chicago on business a few weeks ago. Since I was going out there anyway I decided to check out how far away the CMP North Store / Camp Perry / Port Clinton, Ohio was... only 275 miles. My business ended in Chicago on Thursday so it sounded like a road trip. I arranged a day of vacation for Friday and headed out to Camp Perry on a Thursday afternoon.

I stayed at the Best Western in Port Clinton on Thursday night (nice affordable hotel - think it was about $50), then had a great breakfast at the A La Carte diner on Friday morning. Headed to the CMP Store / Clamp Perry which was only a few miles away and was there when the store opened up for the day.

The store is pretty small but clean, well organized, well staffed, and had pleny of rifles. The M1 Garands went from $495 for the "Field Grades" to $1,100 for the "Correct Grades". They had "Service Grade Specials for $895, and "Specials" for $995.

I picked out a nice "Special" which looked like a brand new gun. The Springfield Armory receiver dates to 1944. The barrel is a new production Criterion, and the stock a new production Boyd's made to CMP specs, which are a different, slimmer profile than the standard Boyds commercial M1 stocks.

The metal is all refinished and looks to be in virtually perfect condition. There is no pitting on the reciever or other metal, and the op-rod has almost no slop in the reciever track. There are no dents or dings in the metal, even where it should be most common, such as the sight ears.

I reload and was pleased to find the gun is very gentle to the brass, with it only stretching .003"-.005" upon firiing.

I bought a nice condition surplus GI web sling while I was there for $6.

I also learned of the CMP's great deals on ammo. I ordered two cases (400 rounds total / 20 boxes total) of Hornady 168 grain M1 Match Ammo. It was $23 per box and $9 per case (10 boxes) shipping, no tax.

They also sell Hornady 223 75 grain match for $12 per box. Loose Greek 150 grain ball for the M1 was $98 per 200.

The rifle was shipped Fed-Ex for $23. No Sales tax even though I paid for it there, since it was being shipped out of state. Delivery goes right to your house.

Purchasing was actually pretty easy. I just showed up with a copy of my DD214 and a copy of my membership papers in the Garand Collectors Association - which I had just joined online a week or so prior for $25. I also had a copy of my birth certificate but they said they didn't need a copy since I had the DD214.

Anyhow it was a great trip and one I would like to repeat. I kick myself for not checking out the CMP years ago. I have read their adds in the American Rifleman for ages and never got around to ordering a gun or going to one of the stores. The other store is in Anniston, Al. I figured it would be a fair bit of hassle so I kept putting it off.

A while back I started shooting High Power style matches at my club. They also have "Old Soldiers" matches every other month. I needed a WWII or prior rifle to legally complete in those. So I finally followed up in order to buy a Garand.

It was totally worth it. And I really like the M1 Garand! It has a look and feel that is unmatched by any rifle I have owned or fired... though the M1A in a wood stock comes close.

If you have considered the CMP and a M1, I encourage you to check it out. The CMP allows the purchase of 12 M1s per year. Sadly I think, there are a few guys out there hoarding piles of the rifles for investment purposes. Personally I would like to see this historic rifle get out in to the hands of more American families and enjoyed on the firing lines while they can still be had affordably from the CMP. Now is a good time to buy, and I doubt there will be a better time in the future.

I agree people blow the qualifaction require, ents out of proportion. The hardest part was taking to a notary! For the mail order form...

I ordered an hra field grade and 2 lots of clipped ammo (196 each i think) for a total of under 750$!!!

Best gun purchase i ever made for sure. I already regret not buying more. The clipped ammo is gone only loose for the same price. I was going to get a carbine as well but decided it was too much money doh! They are gone now!!! Price increases are rumored for the first of the year. And im really thinking about a special like welding rod got and as much ammo as i can afford 50c per round 30-06 is like 1$ a gallon gas will be long gone soon

Yep, exact same experience here. They are the best place to buy a piece of Military history.

I thought about making the trip to buy a Garand in person and decided it was too far and ordered online instead.

Should have made the trip. I will never again buy a gun without at least seeing a photo.

The comment about "horders" I think is true. There seems to be a lot of CMP customers hording the M1s and cheap ammo. Wish they would reduce the max quantity of rifles you could by. Maybe this would keep prices down a hair bit.

Did the same thing in August on a trip to Michigan. As luck would have it I arrived there during the Ntl Matches so the store itself was somewhat crowded. If you make a trip during such don/t miss commercial row.......well worth your time.
Still, picked up a service grade special........what would be a correct grade if the wood was original. Metal is as new, even tho it's a 4/55 mfgd rifle. Wood bears the CMP cartouche & while I debated a service grade H&R with a lotta evident use I still opted for the nearly mint metal. I can ALWAYS look for a correct stock! That rifle shoots exceedingly well, and with select handloads groups like a target rifle.

By the way, Port Clinton is an interesting little town & worth a look around if you get the chance.....had the wife along so we did the downtown walkaround, a winery tour, ate at a nice restaurant & overall had a good time.....Highly recommend a looksee.

Now for Anniston!

My CMP qualification "hoop-jumping".

A long time ago I had a great CMP qualification experience while in the Army. The fellas from a local Kentucky NRA chapter (something -trace) got with our Battalion in 5th Group to set up a range on Ft Campbell for them (NRA) to use for CMP qualification. The Bn armorer was a friend and he got our team to support the safety and communications for the range. In turn, he un-scoped some M-21's / 24's and brought out a bunch of our Battalion's foreign weapons and laid on ammo for us to qualify for CMP Garands. When it was all done, he cleaned the rifles, policed the brass and filed our paperwork through a BN FFL and we received our rack fresh Garands through our Bn. Better still, these were qualified for while on duty (Saturday or Sunday) and using service weapons and in turn, we performed some form of certification of the rifles for the arms room. Win, win all around. The thing I liked most was it was the closest we could come to the "old days" of being able to buy a service weapon DIRECTLY from the government. I think these were what, $185.00?

How would reducing the amount of Garands you could buy per year drive the price down?
Absolutly makes zero sense, in fact it would drive price up.
CMP would have to pay more for storage, warehousing etc. They want to have empty warehouses
The price of Garands on the secondary market would also raise as the less there are the higher the price. All about supply and demand
As far as cheap ammo, it isnt cheap. Just a few years back it was relativly cheap. Everyone was crying and whining, moaning about how the resellers were taking advantage of cheap ammo and reselling and CMP should raise their prices to stop them from making a profit
Well they got their wish, M2Ball is now around .50 per rd , but it hasnt stopped resellers any
Be real carfeul what you wish for

OP, I am so glad to see this thread .
Always wondered if the whole CMP deal was worth the hassle.
Guess I'll have to give it a chance when finances dictate :banghead:
