The CMP and their Garands

The spirit of the rule against reselling is just what Orlando described. What the CMP doesn't want is for a bunch of dealers to show up at the stores (This has happened) and keep the normal Folks away from the racks while they try to take the cream of the crop to resell at gun shows. Certainly there are some abuses of the CMP by profiteers, but many or most have been identifed and had priviledges revoked. Yes it is a priviledge. As far as not "ever" selling a CMP rifle, some people right now are faced with a couple extra Garands and no food in the fridge. What ya think you are going to do?

My purpose in making my multiple purchase (3) was driven by the ability to make a choice (I had never ordered a CMP rifle before) more than to "make a profit" (I don't -think- I can retire on the "profit" I would make on 2 CMP Service Grade Garands). I didn't want to depend on the "luck of the draw" to deliver to me the rifle I might have picked from the rack. At least this way I got -some- choice, and at some point in the future two more folks will get very nice Garands w/o the wait from CMP.

And, I think it worked just fine. The first one was very nice, but the 2nd one was outstanding (new stock).

Some days you just get lucky. This is my SA SG.

CZguy,

What kind of finish did you put on that one?

I have a SG CMP birch replacement tiger stripe stock similar to yours that I have not done anything to yet. I'm assuming you did something to lighten the color?

.45&TKD,

I smoothed out the stock with 0000 steel wool, then wiped with a tack cloth. Then put three coats of BLO on, wiping off the excess. The BLO darked the color slightly.

Yes, they are trying to prevent stuff like this:

Since I couldn't go to the store to pick one myself, I figured I'd keep the best of the three and sell the other two.

When they have you sign and notarize a form that says this:

I further certify that I am a current member of a gun club or state association presently affiliated with the CMP (or that I am a
parent or guardian of a junior shooter under the age of 18 who is a member), and that I am purchasing this rifle for my (or my
junior shooter’s) personal use and not for resale or commercial disposition
.

There is no requirement that you "take it to the grave", but they hope folks are honest and buying for their own use. Like any gun you are free to grow tired of it and sell it when you no longer want it. The CMP was originally the DCM (Department of Civilian Marksmanship) and the program was set up to get common folk shooting. It didn't turn into a source for collectors and resellers until much later. At least that's the way I understand it.

Sport45, you are correct.

Also your photography is great. I have a 10MP Sony and I just can't make that camera do what others that own it can

skidooman603,

We have the same camera. Read the camera manual for the settings again. I leave mine on auto and let the camera do the work.

Your photo looks good. I enjoy shooting my 03-A3 too.

You've got it right, Sport45,and in the DCM days a person could buy only one rifle, ever, except that a rifle could be bought by a competitor from them at Camp Perry during the National Matches outside the rule. That was when the department was a governmental department.

The reorganization that created the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) as a self-supporting quasi-governmental agency has gradually slackened their rules in order to make more money for their programs.

I agree with both acera and orlando.

A service grade M1 Garand from the CMP is, in my opinion, the best firearm buy in the country.

Well, being an old cuss, I didn't have to do all the things that they require, but I am qualified to do them. That being said, they are really interested in my status in an approved club with a CMP program. I am an annual member in two and I need to send in proof of member ship each year.

BUT IT IS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT. I BOUGHT A REALLY NICE ONE FROM THEM TWO YEARS AGO
AND LOTS OF AMMUNITION TO SHOOT. GREAT PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH.

However, there is a wait involved.
