I know there is no way to ever tell this for sure but on average how long does the CMP keep shipments in stock?

I am wanting a Garand but won't be able to get the requirments met before say Oct. unless something drastic changes in the near future. I woud hate to miss out on the selection they have right now due to being sold out.

What do you guys think? Be fine waiting until Oct. or bust my butt to find a way to meet them now.

I think the hard core folks will tell you the sooner the better. I mean really.......would you rather wait 6 months for your birthday present or get it now!

If I interpret your question correctly.....yes, CMP will stil have M1s available in October.

Are you waiting for October to get the money or to qualify to buy the rilfe? If it's that latter, you should know that the CMP has made some changes that make it really easy to qualify. For $25, you can join the Garand Collectors Association (http://www.garandcollectors.org/) to meet your affiliation requirement. They used to require that you shoot 50 rds in a match but no more. You can qualify by shooting high power, small caliber, pistols, shotguns, etc in competition or even at a shooting range where a range officer can sign a document (it's on the website too) certifying that you did shoot at least 50 rounds and you demonstrated knowledge of the firearm and firearm saftey.

Check out their website at http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm for specifics.

The req's ...

may not take as long as you think. A C & R FFL, easily obtained, will satisfy the marksmanship activity. The only reason to leave your seat is to notarize the CMP application. The Garand Collectors of America is a fine organization to join, just need dues and a postage stamp. So busting your hump may not be required.

The availability of Garands is limited. The recent excitement over the Danish VAR caused a sell out in short order. Depending on what you want, availability is from immediate to months.

See this discussion forum: http://www.odcmp.org/forum/default.asp where there are many Q and A on availability of specific rifles.

What is the reason for your October time frame if you don't mind me asking?

The delay is for the next three months I will be out of state. Not real sure how if I would have been able to get any of the shooting requirmenst met while gone. I hadn't noticed the C&R option or the Collectors option. I will look into both of those.

I mention Oct. in particular because I plan on taking my CCW class then and saw that it doubled as a requirment but I may jump on one of the other options.

Thanks guys

dumb question, but I heard a rumor that the CMP might be releasing a bunch of M14's for sale.

Is this just a dirty rumor designed to excite me or is there any truth to this?
Sorry about the hijack

I will add a second on that about the M14's. They will NEVER be released to public sale for two reasons:

1. An M14, as issued, had the ability to perform automatic fire. Even if the particular rifle was ALTERED to NOT be capable of such automatic fire, the ATF considers "once a machine gun, always a machine gun." Until that changes, NO M14's.
2. Legal issues above aside, there are just NOT VERY MANY M14's left. Those that are left the military actually needs. Last I heard, some persons in the know estimated total remaining stocks of M14's at about 200,000, with a large percentage of them being unusable without MAJOR repairs. That means that somewhat under 100,000 M14's can be counted upon for various missions right now, and there are enough calls for those rifles that makes releasing any to public sale not in the best interest of the US military supply chain.
