Thanks CZ,

"Won" is a relative term that usually means money comes IN:rolleyes:

After looking at the overall quality of what I received I just ordered my second one:cool:

I will be ordering 2 of these every year as long as the quality holds up.

This could be addictive!

I have two M1s and was lucky enough to order one SA, and one HRA. After straightening out the parts, I now have two correct rifles.

I had to stop buying after two and concentrate on ammo. These rifles are fun to shoot.

Way I figure it, is to just take the money I'd spend in bars and strip clubs (if I went to bars and strip clubs) and divert is to purchasing a few collectible rifles at discount prices.

Of course, at the rate some of my acquaintances spend in such establishments I could be purchasing full auto Thompson SMGs:evil:

Seriously, as a hobby, a firearms collection is a lot less expensive than many others when you consider the value many of them retain over time.

I have spent similar sums of money on a mountain bike, and on a kayak. I doubt they will be worth much in 5-10 years no mater how well cared for.

She Cleaned up Real Nice

Ok, All cleaned, lubed, and re assembled.

The metal is virtually pristine with just a bit of wear on the edges, if that. Bore is nice and shiny with no pitting at all.

The wood came out great! Pictures just don't do it justice.

I will take her out to the range tomorrow and see how she likes Greek:evil:

Steven58 nice rifle. Recieved my FED-EX notice today. Should be here on thursday. I hope it cleans up as nice as yours. Will post pics . deadeye.

Thanks Deadeye,

I used pure tung oil on the stock. From what I understand it's getting hard to find. If you want to give it a try I got it here:

http://www.realmilkpaint.com/oil.html

I got the 16 Oz. bottle and have done the Garand, an M1 Carbine and all of our bedroom and dining-room furniture. I still have more than half left. This stuff is fantastic at bringing out the grain and glow of the wood.

Steven58 I just did a K-31 stock with Hoppe's pure tung oil.I like the finish but after the 4TH coat the wife was wondering what that smell was coming from the basement. It has its own odor.

Hey Deadeye,

I think you have an extra "P" in there? (must come from a lifetime of cleaning guns;)) I was able to find "Hope's 100% Tung Oil" http://www.dtep.com/hc02001.htm

I never tried that one. The one I used http://www.realmilkpaint.com/oil.html had a very subtle warm wood odor to it. Not objectionable, in fact rather pleasant. either way you couldn't smell it unless you were standing right next to the rifle.

When put on an entire bedroom or diningroom of furniture the smell was slightly noticeable for a few days and gradually faded. I'm sorry it did as friends who came over liked it and asked what air freshener we were using.

I've been telling my wife for years that we need an air freshener that smells like Hope's #9 solvent.

Steven58, Is that a hairline crack on the R/H pistol grip in the first picture? If it is I have used a product that will fix that. Let me know.

You are correct only 1 "P". You know how a steady intake of Hoppes #9,brake clean, auto exhaust ect and a occasional beverage can kill a brain cell or two. Anyway back on subject hopefully tomorrow I will post pics of my first M-1.

CZ,

No it's definitely not a crack. I just double checked its a scratch that if you hold the rifle in hand is barely noticeable. I guess in the picture the light caught it just right. Probably from a loose sling with its hardware rubbing against it as it rode in the back of a deuce sometime in the past.

Well, let me post these before and after photos of a USGI stock that I repaired for a buddy, just in case someone needs to repair a cracked stock.

(I'll post the product in the morning, I'm too tired to go check right now.)

Sorry all, no time for pics tonight. Anyway If you have seen one garand with a new birch stock you have seen them all. Muzzle 1, throat 2. All parts appear to be H&R. (reciever 5531xx,bolt and barrel, not the same serial numberl). The neet thing is when I pulled the bolt back and saw on the barrel a 9-54. I'm assuming that that is a date of manufactor. My birth month and year. more to follow.

Shoots Good

Ok,

Went to the range today. Very excited as I have never fired an M1 Garand before.

I ran 1 bandoleer through her with no problems.

All clips locked in place.

All clips fired 8 rounds nominally with the clip ejecting on #8.

Zeroed at 25 yds. with 3 rounds, then moved out to 100 yds. (max at our range). Zeroed in 8 rounds. Shot some for familiarization then tried to do my best with the last 3 targets. I found this rifle very comfortable to shoot. Held snug into the shoulder its recoil was smooth and easily manageable for the caliber.

I liked the Greek surplus ammo. Clean and shiny, all rounds fired and felt strong. The can it came in was skat* all rusted on the outside with a bent latch. But, when opened it gave a nice hiss showing it was still air tight (although on inspection of the gasket I was surprised as it was crumbling to dust).

I think the rifle is capable of greater accuracy than I am especially as I rarely shoot with iron sights. The last target I was having a good group but rushed the last 2 shots and opened it up, DANG! I can't wait to try this again with a proper sling.

Here are the last 3 100 yd. targets:

Slowly walk back to the rifle, taking deliberate steps. Pick up the Rifle, and pull the Ops rod to it's rear must position and lock it. Now check the barrel markings, If by some chance it is stamped LMR stands for line material Co. You really got lucky. These are some on the most accurate barrels put on an MI.

nope no LMR. there is a larger L stamped way left and not the same style as the other characters next hra, serial number,9-54,rs-38 and two other marks that a hard to make out. thx deadeye

Sent my order today...

Today (2011 April 08) I sent my order for two M1s: a Winchester Field Grade and a Harrington & Richardson Service Grade. I, too, am now playing the waiting game! I'll post updates after I receive them.

Went to the range today

Sorry no pics of perfect targets. First time to shoot the M-1(and K-31). But I must say shooting the M-1 was very enjoyable. Even the other 4 guys in our impromtu noon hour group bailed out on their high test/scoped rifles to run a few clips thru the M-1. Nothing but compliments on the rifle, iron sights and all. Well off to order more ammo. I wonder if the wife could get a second job to support this habit? I can see a SA M-1 with some history coming my way soon. thx all for your previous input. deadeye

My M1 will be here tomorrow. I plan on stripping it down and cleaning it real well. Any suggestions or hints so I dont hate myself down the road?
