CMP Service Grade U.S. RIFLE CAL. .30 M1

I feel exactly the same. While absolutely an incredible piece of history, an AR it is NOT!

Reminds me: my first opportunity to shoot either rifle was at a range day in the 1980s, sponsored by a local gunshop. They had taken most of their used inventory to the range, and visitors could shoot whatever they wanted just for the cost of ammunition. My thoughts on these two rifles that day went something like this:

M1 Garand -- great sights and recoil from the prone position was less than any other battle rifle I'd shot in 30-06 or 308

AR-15 -- little recoil and shoots well, but the twang in my ear from the buffer spring sure was annoying!

I only have two M1's................. seeing some of these pictures makes me feel so "Left Out." Only 6 more to buy. :)

Have found over the years that Five(5) is a good number of M1 Rifles to acquire/retain.

1 - Shooter
3 - Interesting Rifles
1 - Spare

More - and you become a curator.
(Firearms Collecting - is a mental disorder)

:D

YMMV

Nah ... stock is too shiny. ;)
You are absolutely correct. That stock is off of a later gun. It is one of only two parts that are not original, the other one being the op-rod. That part is is a dash-1, from a later gun. This rifle is one of the original 80 model shop guns. The word "semiauto" was deleted when the production run began with # 81

Number 1 is at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, in Springfield Mass.

I think it’s great to have one or more of these. After shooting it a bunch, you would have a large quantity of 30 cal brass, from which to build & reload for 6.5mm-06! You know? To take advantage of some Long Distance accuracy, LOL! :D

A 6.5mm-06 M1 Rifle, properly throated for 140-160 gr. bullets, would be sweet.

... or even 6.5x55mm, as am already in that chambering.

It is indeed! Good friend of mine in Benson, AZ did a 6.5mm-06 AI. He got board with it because of how accurate it was. My friend enjoys reloading even more than I do. His true passion is working up a load for each rifle he does. His 6.5 laid down clover leafs from the first load to his last. No discernible difference. He told me, “buddy, it’s like no matter what I load it’s accurate!” I told him sounds like a good problem to have. That is when he explained his disappointment. Like there was no satisfaction.

I understand his point, but still a GOOD problem, LOL. OH....and I agree with you.

Have been usin' IMR 4831 for both the .270 WCF/150 gr., and the 6.5x55mm/140 gr..

Neither seem to be all that fussy.

I ordered a single 03A3 ($400 Jan'05) from the CMP.

I delayed ordering, primarily because they were offered in ungraded condition. I hesitated to spend $400 to Spin the Wheel.

When I saw a report that the supplies of the 03A3s were running out, I ordered one.

They sent me one that is as close to brand new as I will ever see. :what:

In the shipping box it was in a slim green plastic bag which was "glued" to the rifle by the liberal coating of cosmoline. After slowly & carefully removing the old cosmo (the bore & chamber were completely filled) and then inspecting the rifle I realized that there were almost no wear marks on the piece. :D

18 months later, the low-inventory warning about the (also offered ungraded) 03s popped up and I ordered one. I decided upon a 1903 Mark 1 ($400 Jun'06). This time my spin at The Wheel was not as successful. Well used rifle with a non-original stock but I am not put off by marks on an old milsurp. I was satisfied with what the CMP sent to me. :)
My A3 was also a cmp gun and in like-new condition. Probably my most accurate open-sights rifle, its a laser!

While not advertised as... most likely. ..
Yeah ... I must confess that that annoyed me (I even emailed them suggesting that they be forthcoming in their advertising ... silence) and served to lower my respect for AIM.

By the pics that they had posted on their webpage, those rifles were well done. Beautiful!

And now we know that at least one of them is very accurate shooter, too. Excellent news. :)

Think they were done by an outfit named Gibbs.

It's now his favorite rifle.

(found'em a wee bit of a mule for all-day shooting)

Had a 6.5 Creedmoor do that to me. I HATE working up loads, but the thing just SHOOTING....I dunno...didnt feel right.....So I traded it away for a BAR mk2 I knew id have to tinker with.

Very cool group of Garands you guys posted. Those guns plus M1A1s have helped make the similar Mini 14 & 30 irresistable for vast numbers of people.

Has the price of M2 Ball ammo gone up much in the several years * Before the Chinese Virus arrived here?

Well...

My last go-round with PPU M2 in the 500 rd can... was $300 delivered.

I got my service grade M1 from CMP last fall pre-pandemic and mine is restocked with a new CMP-cartouched stock. Of course, it's absolutely beautiful, but to tell the truth, I would have preferred to get one with an original stock. Are the service grade rifles they're selling now they're re-opened coming with original stocks or new stocks?

Don't keep my ear to that rail much these days.

Would check over at the CMP Forum/M1 Garand and ask over there.

There are also USGI stocks to be had, either retail of on the CMP forum marketplace, if it's somethin' that gnaws at you.

Well, ya, kinda. I like my milsurps to be 100% "the real thing" having "been there and done that" ... so a replacement stock doesn't quite make it that for me. Maybe at some point I'll have to buy another just for that purpose and keep this one just for shooting (or sell it ... naw, skip that, I apologize for even thinking it).
