CMP M1 Garand Service Grade

I have an important question to ask that I forgot about earlier....I own and M1 Garand but am still fairly new to the game. While at the range today I shot 6 (8 round) enbloc clips and on every single clip, the 7th round failed to feed. bang bang bang and then jam on the 7th round everytime. It obviously has to be some kind of problem to have such a consistant error? Any suggestions or fixes?
The issue known as a "7th round stoppage" has come up before:
http://www.jouster.com/forums/showthread.php?11643-7th-Round-Stoppage

Lots of times, from what I've read, it seems related to the fit of the stock causing something to bind.

:D I just got the email with tracking from Nina at the Southern store!

My rifle, bayonet and ammo arrives Monday.:D

Pictures and a full report to follow.;)

Welcome to the club. I hope you remembered to order some .30-06 on the clips, so you can load it up, only one single empty 8-round clip comes in the box with the rifle.

GC,

yes, I ordered 192 rounds of Greek in enbloc clips. Funny thing, after carefully checking the email, turns out they are shipping only the rifle and bayonet. The Ammo order shows as "processing" when I checked my account.

I sent them an email asking about this.

The bright side is the delay in having ammo will give me the self control to strip the rifle down, check it, clean & lube it and properly treat the stock with tung oil before I shoot it.

I did a trial run with tung oil on my M1 carbine. The stock had been painted brown sometime in the 1960s:scrutiny:

So, I stripped it down as best I could and started with 5 coats of 50/50 PTO and odorless mineral spirits, allowing 24 hrs to dry between each coat. Then I did 3 coats of PTO with 72 hrs between each coat.

I think it turned out OK.

The CMP ammo shipments seem to be geting processed quicker later.
You'll need more ammo, there's something about the ease of loading that enbloc clip that lends itself to a long day at the range.
Good luck with your Garand.

The strange thing is I ordered the ammo and the rifle at the same time(end of Feb). Both order forms were in the same envelope!

I would have bet the ammo would have arrived long before the rifle.

FLA Garand Owners

Get together? There are three ranges in the Tampa area. Dade City, Manatee Gun and Archery, or Wyoming Antelope. Lets shoot those rifles?

Fedex Just left!

This is exactly as I got it not cleaned off, checked or lubed yet but "this one is mine!":D

Muzzle is "0" Throat is 2+. The rest of her looks in very good shape with just a bit of wear on the edges.

There is grease on the surface but no cosmoline that I can see

Bayonet was coated in a dried grease.

From what I can see so far bbl and receiver are SA, bolt is HRA.

SS#58288XX If any of you can give me info from this # it is appreciated.

Time to clean her up and take more pictures. When the ammo gets here it's off to the range!

USGI wood, you scored!
You should do a complete tear down and clean. Strip the bolt and trigger assembly. everything down to the smallest part. You should learn to do it anyway .
Be sure and use grease to lube the rifle, not oil
Nice rifle

Thanks Orlando, but no, I think the wood is a new birch CMP stock.

It has a "P" on the grip face and the CMP eagle on the side. No other markings.

Still nice though;)

You have a USGI stock, The P is a proof firing mark. The DOD, Deptartment Of Defense (Eagle and Stars) stamp.
The CMP commercial stocks will be stamped CMP and do not have P proof marks and would not be covered in grease preservation. They are a very dry (ugly in my opinon) Trust me you scored
This is a Commercial Birch CMP stock

It's a USGI stock, and looks more like Walnut than Birch. The CMP stocks don't have the "P" stamp, showing a rifle was test fired and proofed in the stock.

I'm moving up the ladder. Have not recieved the official E-Mail but I all the sudden have 2 open orders when checking my account at CMP tonight. Says to recieve order with in 30 days. Hopefully sooner.deadeye.

Thanks guys,

I guess I did get lucky!

I appreciate you letting me know about the Stock. This is my first Garand and I'm not as familiar with it as I am with the AR family of rifles that I went through basic with. By comparison this is a much more complex rifle (IMHO).

After Speaking to the Southern Store I was expecting a CMP birch stock as the gentleman I spoke with said virtually all of the SA Service grades going out at this time have CMP birch stocks. Also, the grain was so beautiful and has such an almost 3D iridescence that I thought it must be birch. Check the picture below. I lightened it up to show the grain. Still does not come close to how it looked even with the grease on it!

So far, I have removed all of the grease that was on the wood stock using Crud Cutter, a scrunge type kitchen sponge, a few old tooth brushes, rags, and 2 rolls of paper towels.

I must say, this stuff came off allot easier than the dark brown, tenacious, fetid mire that filled and encased my Soviet SKS when I got it 17 years ago. But I digress...

I tried to scrub with the grain as much as possible and be real gentle. Then sponged and scrubbed it all down with warm Murphy's Oil Soap and water. Finally, a warm water rinse and wipe down.

Once it was all completely dry I went over all of the wood with 0000 steel wool, cleaned it with tack cloth and have applied the first coat of 50/50 PTO and odorless mineral spirits.

While that's drying, I have detail stripped the metal and completely cleaned every single part. In about a week the stock should be ready and I will put this all back together. Most of the metal shows zero wear. Only the bolt shows slight wear on the lugs and bearing surfaces. Op rod looks brand new.

So far the only marked part that is not SA is the bolt.

In the meantime I bookmarked the CMP site that shows how to re-assemble the Garand. I have read and re-read all of it and will keep doing so. I don't want to break anything.

If any of you could direct me to decent videos that show the details of dis-assembly & re-assembly I would be very grateful.

I also got the email re: my ammo order. it should be here in 3-5 days.:)

I like this one. Bolt strip not covered, nor rear sight, but very helpful

I like this one for the trigger group. It's for the M14S but is close enough for jazz.

Also refer to the excellent how-tos in the 'Maintenance" section on the right here

steven58,

You must be a Hemingway fan also. That's pretty descriptive writing, you can almost smell it.

I think you won the CMP lottery, that's a beautiful stock.
